Announced at E3 2006, Pit (ピット, Pitto) is a character appearing in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. He uses a bow and arrow as a weapon, and it can also split into 2 small blades. Pit's arrows shoot out like beams of light when fired, and the curve of the arrows' trajectory can be controlled by the player, by pressing up or down. The bow itself can be aimed before shooting the arrow, as seen at around 4:18 in this video. This is called Palutena's Arrow. Pit has the ability to jump in midair multiple times, though, according to the DOJO!!, Pit is an angel who cannot ordinarily fly. Pit's Up-B move, known as the Wings of Icarus, allows him to fly freely for a brief period of time, though, like his midair jumps, he will fall soon afterwards. This move cannot cause damage, and Pit cancels it if he attacks or is attacked. Like Meta Knight and Charizard, Pit is able to glide.

Role in the Subspace Emissary

Pit starts off watching the stadium match between Mario and Kirby through a reflecting pool in a sky palace. After witnessing the invasion of the Subspace Army interrupting the match, the goddess Palutena summons him and sends him to attack the Subspace Army, giving him her Bow of Light. He eventually meets and teams up with Mario, after battling through a Greap. Mario, stuck in trophy form, is awakened by Pit and become a team to fight off the Subspace Army. Later, they chase after the Ancient Minister but fail to catch the Minister. If the player rescued Zelda, Pit and Mario would face off against a clone of Zelda that is made of Shadow Bugs. Link, who was passing by with Yoshi, was furious because he thought that the copy of Zelda was the real thing so he and Yoshi attack Pit and Mario. When the player wins against Link and Yoshi, they are turned into trophies and are captured by King Dedede but are rescued by Kirby. Kirby revives Link and Yoshi, then Link fires an arrow at the car that King Dedede stole from Wario to slow him down. Pit, Mario, Link, Yoshi and Kirby then team up to stop King Dedede. But, if the player rescued Peach, Link and Yoshi would attack the clone of Peach and Mario and Pit would attack Link and Yoshi. But they would lose and turn into trophies. Then they get captured by King Dedede but are rescued narrowly by Kirby. They are then revived by Kirby and Pit fires an arrow at the car that King Dedede stole and the story continues. The five heroes then come across King Dedede's castle, which has been raided by Bowser. The team catches up to Bowser, who has stolen the trophy of Peach/Zelda. Bowser dodged Mario and Pit's attacks and escaped in his Koopa Clown Car. Much later, the team once again runs into the Ancient Minister. Pit fires an arrow at the Minister but he dodges before it hit. They then chase after the Minister but are stopped by his R.O.B army. The R.O.B's then start to activate the Subspace Bomb that the Minister carried. Mario and Pit try to take the R.O.B's that are activating the bomb off (Pit tries to pull one off while Mario punches the other) but are pulled away by two other R.O.B's. The team barely escapes when the bomb explodes. Later, the team come down to help Marth, Ike, Ice Climbers, Lucas and the Pokemon Trainer from a huge army of Subspace Army. Soon, he and the rest of the heroes stormed into Subspace but were transformed into trophies by Tabuu. He was rescued later by Ness, Luigi and King Dedede. He then helped the characters get through The Great Maze and participated in the battle against Tabuu himself.

Event Matches

Event 4: Cleaning House in Skyworld- The player controls Pit and has to break all the platforms in Skyworld with surprisingly, Wario's help. [1]

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • One of the best projectiles, the Palutena's Arrow: Fast, decent damage, controllable, can be used while recovering.
  • Palutena's Arrow can be used for many mindgames.
  • Fast movement.
  • Very Fast attacks.
  • Can combo well.
  • Down-air can spike but is INCREDIBLY hard to hit the proper timing with.
  • Can rack up damage quickly.
  • Most attacks have high priority.
  • Most attacks can kill easily at fairly high percentages.
  • Forward B is an excellent edgeguard.
  • Up B is extremely easy to sweet-spot with.
  • Up B can be attacked out of.
  • Three midair jumps.
  • Can Glide.
  • Can perform Wing Dashing.
  • Glide attack has decent knock back.
  • Hard to edgeguard him.
  • Good edgeguarder.
  • Two ways to reflect projectiles.
  • Back air is a Great KO move.
  • One of the best recoveries in the game, especially vertical when grounded.
  • With the right timing, the Mirror Shield can turn enemies around similar to Mario's Cape.
  • Mirror Shield protects Pit from any frontal attack.
  • Mirror Shield has Super Armor frames upon activation.

Cons:

  • Pit continues to fall for a split second before using his recovery move, leaving him open for attacks and if he is hit during his Up-Special, it cannot be used again, nor can any other jumps be used, which usually results in a KO unless used properly.
  • As like other characters who can glide, if Pit uses his glide on his 3rd jump then ends it he is put into helpless.

Strategy & Tips

  • Be careful while using Pit's Up-B, if you are hit while it is active, you cannot use any other jumps and will fall until you hit the ground, or die.
  • If an opponent is edgeguarding, Pit's Up-B can be used to cross to the other edge by flying beneath the stage.
  • His Forward-B can be used as a great edgeguard.
  • Remember that none of Pit's special attacks have terrific knock back, so use his Dash-A, Forward-Tilt-A, and Forward-Smash to finish opponents.
  • Despite having swords and a bow, Pit is not Link; you must remember that his aerial finishers are somewhat weak, but his Aerial-Back-A is a quick, powerful move that should not be overlooked.
  • Pit has amazing recovery, the best in the game. Every time you get blasted away with Pit, always recover - if the enemy isn't edge hogging, or such, you have about 95% recovery rate.
  • Provided that you are skilled at manipulating his Arrows, you can keep an arrow moving in a loop above you while attacking, and direct it at your opponent whenever it is needed. This can be done with multiple Arrows and is very intimidating.

Standard Moves

Ground Attacks

  • Dash A - Small slash forward with one of his blades. 12% damage.
  • Neutral A - Slashes three times, spins the blades together back and forth, hitting repeatedly. 11% damage.
  • Down Tilt - Crouches and swipes blade towards the ground causing 11% damage.
  • Forward Tilt - Thrusts both blades forward causing 12% damage.
  • Up Tilt - Plants one sword into the ground and does a handstand on it, kicking above him and causing 16% damage.
  • Down Smash - Slashes towards the ground in front of and behind him. Similar to Link's Down Smash. Does 13% worth of damage.
  • Forward Smash - A weak slash followed immediately by a very strong slash, both cause 19% worth of damage.
  • Up Smash - Three quick slashes above his head. Faster, but less knock back than something like Link's, and with more vertical range and less horizontal. All three combined do 13% worth of damage.

Aerial Attacks

  • Neutral Aerial - Spins both blades together in front of him, hitting multiple times causing 11% if all hits connect.
  • Up Aerial - Spins his blades together above his head, hitting multiple times causing 12% if all connect.
  • Forward Aerial - Thrusts both blades forward and quickly brings them apart, slashing horizontally doing 14% damage.
  • Back Aerial - Thrusts sword behind him. Quick and very powerful, Pit's highest knock back aerial move. Not easy to short hop with. Causes 15% damage.
  • Down Aerial - Slashes under him causing 12% damage.
  • Glide Attack - Slashes both swords in a 160 degree arc from bottom to forward. 12% damage, good knockback. Great killing move.

Grabs and Throws

  • Forward Throw - Slashes opponent doing 10% damage.
  • Up Throw - Does a handstand and kicks opponent with both feet causing 11% damage.
  • Down Throw - Slams opponent on the ground causing 6% damage.
  • Back Throw - Twirls around with the enemy in tow and launches him backward doing 8% damage.
  • Pummel - Knees them in the gut. 2% damage.

Stickers

Main emphasis should be placed on [Weapon] and [Slash] damage boosts. Pit's own sticker, which can only be used by him, boasts the highest Weapon attack boost in the game, and should be taken advantage of. Either two boosts should also work well with his Angel Ring, so whatever remaining room should be used to boost his Palutena's Arrow with either an [Energy] attack boost or a [Specials: Indirect] boost.

Special Moves

Special Movements

Taunts

Up: Spins his blades in each hand, then crosses them. He says, "The fight is on!". In the Original Version he says, "Shoubu da!" (Let's fight/beat).

Side: Slices at the air, similarly to a Subspace Emissary video, and from the E3 trailer. He says, "You're not ready yet!". In the Original Version he says "Mada Mada!" (That's not enough).

Down: Floats in the air and poses angelically.

On-Screen Appearance

Rides down from a beam of light from above.

Victory Pose

  • Slashes with his swords and says, "You can't defeat me!". Japanese: "Makerarenai ne!" (I wouldn't lose here!).
  • Bows with the bow in front of his face, then stands up and lifts bow, saying, "Great Palutena, victory is ours!". Japanese: "Parutena-sama, kachimashita yo!" (Palutena-sama, I've won!).
  • Slowly spins the complete bow in front of him, then stops, saying, "Too easy!". Japanese: "Rakushou, rakushou!" (Too easy, too easy!).

Wii Remote Choice

Says, "the fight is on!".

Trivia

  • Pit's swinging motion when he uses the hammer is similar to his stance when using the hammer in the NES Kid Icarus. In addition, he also jumps in the same pose as the original NES game.
  • Pit's Original Voice Actor is Minami Takayama (Edogawa Conan in Meitantei Conan/Case Closed, Nibiki Tendo in Ranma 1/2). His English voice actor is Lani Minella (Rouge the Bat in Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes)
  • When charging Pit’s Palutena’s Arrow attack, make Pit aim straight upward by holding up. Once in this position you can, of course, fire straight upward.
  • Pit’s down special move, the Mirror Shield, not only has the ability to reflect attacks but will actually turn around any opponents who make contact with the shield while Pit is bringing it out.
  • Every once in a while Pit will utter "I’m done for..." as his death cry.
  • Interestingly, Pit cannot enter his rapid fire attack by simply holding the A button, he will only do a three hit combo. However, once you've entered the rapid fire attack, you can hold A to keep it going. This means Pit essentially has two different "combos" depending if you tap or hold the button initially.
  • Depending on the last use move used by the player, Pit can move around with his bow as a bow or seperated (For example, if you use his up tilt last, it will still be together when he walks around, but if his side smash is used last, it will be seperated when he walks around.)
