Should we have a link to here from the old wiki? Mr. Anon 00:10, 1 October 2010 (EDT)

::Actually, we are pretty much ditching the old wiki; the entire active administration has made the switch. I was planning to put a big "SmashWiki has relocated" notice up saying that while SmashWikia will continue to exist, SmashWiki will be the primary Smash Bros. wiki from now on. Besides, how else are we going to get any traffic at first? :::::::: SmashWiki is really useless to the Smash community (I could stop there, but I won't) if it focuses on things like polls rather than on building an encyclopedia. The Smash community already has multiple sites where people can do stuff like that, and it serves no purpose if this becomes another one of them. The Smash community does not, however, have an encyclopedia, which is why this thing was started in the first place. In so far as the SmashWiki community is concerned, I guess it doesn't matter if we're useful to the greater Smash community or not, but what the hell's the point of having SmashWiki only be of use to SmashWiki members? --<font color="red"><b><i>Kirby King</i></b></font> 20:54, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

I've told him to stop advertising (even I've got to admit, the degree of it was a bit uncalled for)I'm just saying that stuff like this needs advertising, and that's why we wanted something on the main page, they wouldn't work if only a few people knew about it. I realized yesterday that Smash Arena does, in fact, have a link to it on the main page, which is good enough for me.  I apologize to Kirby King, and to anyone else who was offended when I implied that opposers (Bushism) weren't people.  The only other thing I can say to that (and I know you've heard it a billion times before) is that, as subtle as it may be, the administration here is slightly elitist, and sometimes overbearing.  Back to the main subject, the Smash Arena is now self-sustaining, so there should be no more advertisements.  Perfect Character will start next week, hopefully under the same forum thread as Smash Arena (they don't deserve separate topics, in my opinion).  Finally, on a more personal note, I feel that I am an excellent contributor to this already great wiki, and I will never do anything that will hurt the value of the website in any way, Scout's honor. If anyone has any comments, please don't say it here, say it on my page. That is all. Kperfekt had the rite idea for putting the video up on the main page, but it came out sloppy, which is prolly why it was reverted. There are two reasons that this media should be put up:
NIWA
*The Main page's left side is almost half the size of the right, making it look weird. :P
*The media section can be used to show intros of the SSB games as well as gameplay of professional smashers.

I know how to edit main pages a little, so if I can put it up correctly, will it be allowed? Wikia does have the distinct connection with YouTube videos whereas one can alter it's size and position. This will benefit the wiki, IMO. Just give it some thought. <font face="forte"><span style="color:orange">Blue Ninjakoopa</span></font><font face="forte"> <small><span style="color:red">Talk to me</span></small></font> 21:22, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

The main page isn't supposed to be perfectly symmetrical.  Considering the left side contains prose writing while the right side contains bulleted lists, it actually makes sense for it not to be symmetrical.  As for the media, it would serve no purpose whatsoever.  All it would do is slow load times and take up space.  I like the fact that all the content on the main page can be seen without scrolling down.  This is something that all good wiki mainpages do.  When we start adding random content to the main page, the whole thing gets messy and turns people off to our content.  Also, there are some internet connections (even some high-speed ones) that periodically have trouble with videos.  I've seen cases of videos from youtube causing the internet connection to go down and have to be reset.  The risk and detriments to doing this far outweighs the reward here.  Clarinet Hawk <small>(talk · contributions)</small> 18:52, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

It is a crossover fighting game that features mostly famous Nintendo video game characters like Mario, Link, and Pikachu and most recently included third party characters Sonic and Snake. The goal of the games is to blast your opponet off the stage by damaging him or her. It is consider one of the best video game series for Nintendo systems. It currently has three video games in the series: Super Smash Bros., which started it all that came out for the N64; Super Smash Bros. Melee was for the GameCube; and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which was for the Wii.

There is some space that needs filling.. But i like the idea. We could just put some genaral info in from above... Just to make it look a bit better. If there's a vote, I'm on the support side. I have kept quiet about this for some time now, because of the then-rapid surge of edits that added in links to other wikis. I didn't want to speak up then, because I didn't want people to feel that I wanted them to undo all of the hard work they just did. However, today I looked at a couple of our fellow NIWA wiki's; specifically Wikirby and Wikibound. For a while, I have objected to the idea of linking to other NIWA wiki's, mainly because of the fact that it appears that we're advertising them. However, I saw that the intent was that it allows users to observe a more descriptive article about something that we really don't need to cover. When I looked at Wikirby and Wikibound, I realized that this won't hold up. Many of their articles are even worse than that of their wikia counterparts, some even worse than our versions. Even with other wikis, I view Zeldapedia as a better source than Zelda wiki, as with Wikitroid to the Metroid wiki. In fact, the only NIWA wiki (other than us, of course) that I personally view as better than any of its wikia counterparts is the Super Mario wiki. As for the other wiki's, however, I see no reason to simply change any links to a wikia to a NIWA wiki simply because of our anti-wikia sentiment. Mr. Anon (talk) 23:43, 26 December 2010 (EST)
:Not that I have any strong opinions on this atm, but Bulbapedia is certainly vastly superior to the Pokemon Wiki on Wikia, so the Super Mario Wiki is not the only other superior NIWA (I could also attest that the NIWA DK Wiki is superior to its Wikia counterpart). As for your other statement, an anti-Wikia sentiment isn't the only reason, it's to help our NIWA allies. As you mentioned, several of the NIWA Wikis are lacking substantial information, and linking to them instead of the Wikia counterparts helps them out, which is one of the purposes of NIWA; for fellow NIWA Wikis to help each other out. <span style="font-family:Edwardian Script ITC; font-size:12pt"><span style="color:forestgreen">Omega</span> <span style="color:forestgreen">Tyrant</span></span> 00:10, 27 December 2010 (EST)
::Oops, I missed Bulbapedia, but my point still stands; the purpose of Smashwiki is not to "help out" other wikis, but instead provide visitors with good information regarding whatever they are looking up. So it is better to link to the wiki that is more informative than the wiki less informative, even if the former is not part of wikia. You say that the point is to help out other wikis, but how do you know that a user visiting will always try to edit? Wikirby, for example, has had no editors in the last 3 days, and won't even allow people to get an account anymore. Also, part of my point is that we shouldn't just adverstise other NIWA wikis simply because they are part of NIWA. I believe the NIWA "ambassator" guy said that the wikis here are supposed to be independant, and that we don't have to act like we are owned by NIWA. That was part of the reason why we left Wikia in the first place. Mr. Anon (talk) 00:19, 27 December 2010 (EST)
:::There's a bit of both - yes, the ultimate aim is to give a place to read about the out-of-scope stuff for SSB characters; but there IS an element of advertising partners and allies - which should, of course, be reciprocal when appropriate - Zelda Wiki definitely has "See SmashWiki's article on X for more information" on their Super Smash Bros. sections. As a result, it's not purely selfless - Google applies a heavy duplicate content penalty to "new" sites that copy information from other sites, and we need all the help we can get to overcome that. I just searched for "Super Smash Bros. wiki", and we're below not just SmashWikia, but also Mario Wiki [NIWA], Zelda Wiki [NIWA], StrategyWiki [NIWA], an IGN wiki and a frankly hopeless Neoseeker SSB wiki.
:::And on other NIWA wikis... well, Lylat Wiki's in the process of incorporating the ex-wikia "Arwingpedia" (which jumped ship like this wiki did, but decided to merge with another wiki in the same field rather than go it alone). Once that's done, it should definitely be superior-by-definition to the vestigial Starfox Wikia. - Reboot (talk) 00:36, 27 December 2010 (EST)

Stage Origins
:::This is an irrelevant point. It's already known that the majority of those who visit a Wiki will never make an edit, but we give them the option to. With that logic, why advertise ourselves anywhere, or even give the option to edit, if we assume no one will help our Wiki out? But with an increase of visitors, the chances of a productive edit being made increases, and providing a link to fellow NIWA Wikis increases the chances of them getting productive edits. What if a Kirby/Smash Bros. enthusiast visits our Wiki, reads Kirby's character article to then follow the link to WiKirby, and notice the information missing that they know and are willing to supply? Was our link to WiKirby detrimental then, especially when it takes only one user to massively benefit a Wiki?

<s>I've been trying to get every stage in the Smash Bros. series to have a "Stage Origin" section to show where the stage came from and kinda the history of the stage. All is explained at the Brawl forum under "Stage Origin". If you went there you can see that only a few people are wanting to help. I think it's not that some people don't want to help, it's that they might not know that I need help. What I mean is that old or new forums are coming up to where the Stage Origin forum is going down the page and being less noticed. I put this on the Main Page's talk so that the project doesn't become less noticeable. Does anybody want to help on my Stage Origin project? Leave a comment below. Love the Wiki. I'm sure it's been around for quite some time now, and I have great respect for it. My name is Jack Harvest, and I am the founder of Team MeowMix, a texture hacking team for Super Smash Brothers Brawl. You can see some of our work at http://teammeowmix.co.cc -- but that's not my point.
SSB64 testing
MANY texture hacking teams have come together, and are working on a collaborative effort known as the BrawlHacks Wiki. (http://brawlhacks.wikia.com) This Wiki will eventually contain every texture artisan's work, and will be available for download here. We ask that (since after checking it out, you're probably going to be interested) help be given in any way possible. We would love to become an affiliate with SSB's Wiki, and continue to lean on one another for help in this huge project.
I now have SSB64 on an emulator, so I can play it regardless of my distance from my wii. If there is any testing somebody wishes to get done, just ask me. Mr. Anon (talk) 20:40, 6 May 2011 (EDT)

I'm not sure we should keep strategy or origin sections on this wiki. Saying "This is a good technique" or "This came from that" is opinion. :While there are times where saying something is a good technique can be an opinion, there a techniques that are good and not just opinionated. For example, it is obvious that L-Canceling is a good technique because it reduces recovery time, and can increase the rate of attacks (btw, I know that the L-Canceling article doesn't mention anything that states it's a good technique, but this is just an example). It's not just some people's opinion that it's a good technique, it's highly regarded as such. As for origins, a lot of the stuff isn't opinionated. It is not an opinion that Onett comes from EarthBound or that Great Bay comes from Majora's Mask. While there are different opinions over where the elements of the stage come from, or even the stage itself, the sections don't go over those opinions. It just simply states the facts and could possibly let the reader make their own conclusion (Like whether or not Smashville comes from Wild World or City Folk since the stage has elements that contradict both games, or like the section says, "Therefore, there is no conclusive proof that the stage is based on either AC:WW or AC:CF, only speculation, leading some to conclude that Smashville is simply a generic Animal Crossing stage only.") If you see a section on a page relating solely to strategy, then you can remove it, but as already stated "This is a good technique" is okay as long as it's backed up with facts. Origin sections are also not opinion if they are sufficiently backed up.
Has anyone noticed any problems with the new logo. For me the new logo is upside down. We stopped allowing fanon because it was decided that fanon was too hard to determine the notability of, and there was also no feasible "cutoff point" for notability. It was too nebulous a determination for something that should be on the back burner anyway. The two options were therefore "allow all fanon" and "allow no fanon", and of course "allow all fanon" is not very acceptable (it would easily drown out the rest of the wiki). This week's featured article is Captain Falcon (SSBM), but there's nothing on the front page feature that links to the article. :::First of all, to BNK, wikia will basically give you a wiki for whatever you want and as long as they get advertising money from it, they don't care. I have found more than a few wikis where basically nothing happens and nothing is notable (i.e. Flight of the Conchords wiki).  As for the second point, it is not the job of this wiki to move our un-notable material to other wikis.  If you want it on that wiki, go ahead and move it there yourself, but I am not going to bother moving it especially since that will just encourage completely random speculation.  The rumors about Sonic in Melee were actually notable and as such, we mention them on the rumors page.  We do not, however, allow any random person to simply edit that page with any rumor they come up with. If you want to do that on the speculation wiki, be my guest, but don't expect my help. link from old wiki

Should we have a link to here from the old wiki? Mr. Anon 00:10, 1 October 2010 (EDT)

We aren't dicthing the old wiki. This shouldn't replace Wikia's version.--MegaTron1XD:p 00:11, 1 October 2010 (EDT)
Actually, we are pretty much ditching the old wiki; the entire active administration has made the switch. I was planning to put a big "SmashWiki has relocated" notice up saying that while SmashWikia will continue to exist, SmashWiki will be the primary Smash Bros. wiki from now on. Besides, how else are we going to get any traffic at first? Toomai Glittershine Data Node 10:58, 1 October 2010 (EDT)
Let's get the bulk of the content over before we invite the masses to join us. Miles (talk) 20:36, 1 October 2010 (EDT)
What I was asking is a shortcut from Smashwiki to here. Whenever I google "Smashwiki" I end up in the wikia one. I think we should have a link from there to here and vice versa. Mr. Anon 22:39, 1 October 2010 (EDT)

Wikia will probably not allow you to have a link redirecting users to other wikis. They will probably block anyone who tries to add one. Solar Dragon (talk) 17:16, 2 October 2010 (EDT)

If you're uploading images from the Smash Wikia, it would be preferable to upload them under the same name, as that way, we won't have to edit whatever page they're on to get them to appear properly. Omega TyrantTyranitarMS.png 17:54, 2 October 2010 (EDT)

Can I help upload Controler images?--Tabuu123 (talk) 17:49, 8 October 2010 (EDT)
I think the Wikia SmashWiki needs a rename if it is possible to help search engines direct users here instead of the old SmashWiki. I don't know if that will work but if it wouldn't or doesn't, contact search engines to make the change. --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 01:13, 5 December 2010 (EST)
Would have been better if you started a new section for something like that. Besides, most people who go to the old one see the sitenotice and if they read it, they'd go here instead and be a loyal follower.--MegaTron1XD:p 01:14, 5 December 2010 (EST)
Shouldn't we just archive the old site or something so that way people will come here? --Wildgoosespeeder (talk) 21:09, 5 December 2010 (EST)
Wikia's a bitch. They won't let us. They barely let Havoc advertise NIWA on there.--MegaTron1XD:p 21:15, 5 December 2010 (EST)

I just realized a way to stop smashwikia from being overrun by vandals: use that Protectsite tool that wikia gave us in the first place. Anyone think we should do this? Mr. Anon (talk) 19:18, 8 October 2010 (EDT)

Mesuxelf, sit back and learn, as you aren't helping. We already have a link Anon. It's in the site notice, something everyone sees. Wikia allows that, but I'm unsure if they'll let us put up a link on the main page :/ --MegaTron1XD:p 10:07, 9 October 2010 (EDT)

Now that you guys are independent and since the Super Smash Bros. series is part of Nintendo. I think it'd be great for you guys to join NIWA!! I'm not sure how it works, but the website is right here -->[1] --99.163.246.132 16:47, 21 October 2010 (EDT)

NIWA Info

NIWA is requesting a site blurb for here and a contact email for here. So let me know what you want these things to be or I'll just make something up! --Porplemontage (talk) 16:31, 28 October 2010 (EDT)

Have this for a blurb:

Originally two seperate wikis (one on SmashBoards, the other on Wikia), SmashWiki as we know it was formed out of a merge on February 29th, 2008, becoming independent on September 28, 2010. SmashWiki is the premier source of Smash Bros. information, from simple tidbits to detailed mechanics, and also touches on the origins of its wealth of content from its sibling franchises.

Users who disagree with this blurb, say so before it's too late.
As for a contact e-mail, I guess you can use mine, since I'm the most active bureaucrat: toomai{underscore}glittershine[at]yahoo<dot>ca. Toomai Glittershine Data Node 17:11, 28 October 2010 (EDT)

How's that for a blurb (written in like 45 seconds + copypasta from SmashWiki:About, but I think it works okay)?

You guys gunna add that little box all the other NIWA wikis have at the bottom? All the other niwa wikis have them, they're very useful for quick back-and-forth mainpage linking, and interwiki stuff. There's Wikirby's, bottom of that page, bottom of that page so on and so forth. Also you guys should be on the hub tomorrow (:. Then you'll finally be niwa members. Any of your staff I suggest creating an account on the forums. Add Smash Arena/IRC links?

Considering how there is/will be a new user influx, how about putting Template:SA Box and/or something about SW:IRC on the main page somewhere? Since we're probably one of the stiffer wikis in terms of talk page and forum rules, it'll lift most opinions of us being 100% srs bsns. Toomai Glittershine Data Node 11:39, 30 October 2010 (EDT)

Anti-Wikia Skin Alliance newsletter

The Anti Wikia Skin Alliance Newsletter
Issue 1 (December 2010)
TALK MOVING MOVED HELP ATTACKS DOI WHY

Hello former wikia members. Editors at the Anti-wikia skin alliance wanted to begin a newsletter to help build a bridge to the former wikias about what is currently happening on Wikia and what is going on at the Anti-wikia skin alliance.

45 wikias have left wikia

As of December 17, 2010, an incredible Forty-five wikias with 7114 editors have signed the moved page stating they have left wikia. Other wikias are currently in the process of deciding whether to leave. In response, wikia has desysopped at least 38 administrators and banned 10, usually indefinitely. In a meeting with Wikia staff member Sannse reportedly said "Wikia underestimated the negative response to Oasis..."

Monaco available

Please let your friends who remained on wikia know that:

 1. Wikifarm Shoutwiki has stated that Monaco would be available by the end of the year on Shoutwiki.
 2. Editor Dantman has created the Monaco skin which can be installed on your wikia in 10 minutes. Dantman states this is not a complete skin. It is missing a few features. But it is Monaco.
Javascript code to redirect your wikia site

This code redirects your Wikia site to a different URL address. :

if ( wgUserGroups === null || typeof( wgUserGroups ) != null && wgUserGroups.join(' ').indexOf( 'staff' ) == -1 && wgUserGroups.join(' ').indexOf( 'helper' ) == -1 && wgUserGroups.join(' ').indexOf( 'vstf' ) == -1 && wgUserGroups.join(' ').indexOf( 'sysop' ) == -1 && wgUserGroups.join(' ').indexOf( 'bureaucrat' ) == -1 ) { window.location = 'http://URLofYourNewWiki.example.com/wiki/' + wgPageName;
}
Warning, you will be banned if you add this code to your wikia.
Help other wikis

If you have technical skills many wikis could use your help. For example, the new Monaco skin's "more" button does not work because none of the javascript has been ported. Other wikis who bravely left wikia are sorely in need of technical assistance. If you can volunteer your time, please sign up here.

If you need technical assistance, please explain your problem here.

Assistance with the next newsletter

We would like some help with the next newsletter. We would like to have an interview next time and we are looking for editors who would like to write a regular column. If you are interested, please see here.

Crew namespace

Perhaps we should have an entire namespace for crews, like we have for smashers. That way, they become more organized. Mr. Anon (talk) 21:23, 22 December 2010 (EST)

How many crew pages are there? Toomai Glittershine ??? 21:23, 22 December 2010 (EST)
Wow, that was a fast response. I haven't counted how many crew pages there are, mostly because they're not organized very well. However, I know that there must be quite a lot, since I often reach a crew page when I hit random page. Mr. Anon (talk) 21:29, 22 December 2010 (EST)
Looking at category: crews comes up with 81 articles. Is that enough for a namespace? Mr. Anon (talk) 21:31, 22 December 2010 (EST)
Why not just incorporate them and tournaments into the Smasher:* namespace? (Smashers, Crews of Smashers, Tournaments for Smashers. Avoids the current inter-namespace fragmentation) - Reboot (talk) 00:13, 27 December 2010 (EST)
Good idea. Part of my reasoning was that crew and tournament pages are kind of similar to smasher pages in that they depart from the usual encyclopedic style. Mr. Anon (talk) 00:21, 27 December 2010 (EST)
The smasher namespace is called so because it specifically covers the smashers that play the game. Plus, a title of "Smasher:Good Shit German" doesn't sound like the title of an article about a tournament or properly denote it. Same for crews. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 00:23, 27 December 2010 (EST)
Perhaps create an entirely new namespace called "competitive play" or something like that that includes Smashers, Tournys, and crews? Mr. Anon (talk) 00:30, 27 December 2010 (EST)

Links to other wikis

Not that I have any strong opinions on this atm, but Bulbapedia is certainly vastly superior to the Pokemon Wiki on Wikia, so the Super Mario Wiki is not the only other superior NIWA (I could also attest that the NIWA DK Wiki is superior to its Wikia counterpart). Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 00:10, 27 December 2010 (EST)
Oops, I missed Bulbapedia, but my point still stands; the purpose of Smashwiki is not to "help out" other wikis, but instead provide visitors with good information regarding whatever they are looking up.
There's a bit of both - yes, the ultimate aim is to give a place to read about the out-of-scope stuff for SSB characters; but there IS an element of advertising partners and allies - which should, of course, be reciprocal when appropriate - Zelda Wiki definitely has "See SmashWiki's article on X for more information" on their Super Smash Bros.
And on other NIWA wikis... well, Lylat Wiki's in the process of incorporating the ex-wikia "Arwingpedia" (which jumped ship like this wiki did, but decided to merge with another wiki in the same field rather than go it alone). Once that's done, it should definitely be superior-by-definition to the vestigial Starfox Wikia. - Reboot (talk) 00:36, 27 December 2010 (EST)

the purpose of Smashwiki is not to "help out" other wikis, but instead provide visitors with good information regarding whatever they are looking up
There is nothing of the SmashWiki's "purpose" that has no intent of helping developing allied Wikis.
You say that the point is to help out other wikis, but how do you know that a user visiting will always try to edit?
This is an irrelevant point.
Also, part of my point is that we shouldn't just adverstise other NIWA wikis simply because they are part of NIWA. I believe the NIWA "ambassator" guy said that the wikis here are supposed to be independant, and that we don't have to act like we are owned by NIWA.
In case you didn't realise, the "A" in NIWA stands for Alliance. As in, yes we are independent Wikis not own by a higher organisation, but we are Allies. As such, we help them, and they help us back. It's the basic concept of an alliance.
As for WiKirby not allowing accounts to be made, it's likely a temporary problem, and you can find information about it there or on the NIWA forums. No proper Wiki would suddenly not allow account creation without an explanation. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 00:45, 27 December 2010 (EST)
WiKirby appears to have had some sort of crash - the message you get when you try and create an account is "The database is currently locked to new entries and other modifications, probably for routine database maintenance, after which it will be back to normal. The administrator who locked it offered this explanation: Restoring data from backup" - Reboot (talk) 00:57, 27 December 2010 (EST)
Thanks for checking that out Reboot, I personally couldn't check it out myself at the time. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 01:08, 27 December 2010 (EST)

Cut down on strategy/origins, bring back Fanon

I'm not sure we should keep strategy or origin sections on this wiki. Saying "This is a good technique" or "This came from that" is opinion. Furthermore, I don't really agree with the removal of Fanon. True, we have a policy saying "no fanon", but we also have a policy saying "this wiki is not official". Mr. Anon (talk) 13:45, 26 June 2011 (EDT)

While there are times where saying something is a good technique can be an opinion, there a techniques that are good and not just opinionated. It just simply states the facts and could possibly let the reader make their own conclusion (Like whether or not Smashville comes from Wild World or City Folk since the stage has elements that contradict both games, or like the section says, "Therefore, there is no conclusive proof that the stage is based on either AC:WW or AC:CF, only speculation, leading some to conclude that Smashville is simply a generic Animal Crossing stage only.") Unknown the Hedgehog 14:10, 26 June 2011 (EDT)

If you see a section on a page relating solely to strategy, then you can remove it, but as already stated "This is a good technique" is okay as long as it's backed up with facts. Origin sections are also not opinion if they are sufficiently backed up.

Toomai Glittershine ??? The Metroid 14:48, 26 June 2011 (EDT)

What Toomai and Unknown the Hedgehog said, tbh. Also, how would fanon improve the wiki? This wiki is strictly about the Super Smash Bros. games and their components; fanon does relate to that, whereas origins and strategies do. DoctorPain99 (Talk • Contribs) DoctorPain99.png 15:04, 26 June 2011 (EDT)
Which is more likely: someone looking up how to wavedash or someone looking up a Smash Flash game? I think the former.
Additionally, origin sections are, in my opinion, more important than the entire Smasher namespace. Miles (talk) 16:36, 26 June 2011 (EDT)
