Riptide 2023 was a Super Smash Bros. Melee major and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate superregional held in Sandusky, Ohio, from September 8th-10th, 2023.
Tournament summary[edit]
Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]
At Riptide, both Plup and Wizzrobe were able to advance through the bracket to meet in grand finals, despite each rarely entering tournaments throughout the year (Wizzrobe was unranked on the SSBMRank Summer 2023 due to inactivity); this was repeat of the grand finals for CEO 2023 earlier that year, with Plup again emerging victorious in a ten game grand finals. lloD also made an impressive losers' run; after falling to Gahtzu in winners', he defeated Wens, Grab, Flash, Polish, KoDoRiN, aMSa, Axe, and moky, before falling to Wizzrobe 2-3 in losers' finals, placing 3rd overall.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
In a similar vein to its previous iteration, Ultimate singles had a large entrants count but only a handful of top 100 players, with only four of the most recent ranking's top 50 players in attendance and only one -- MuteAce -- being in the top 20. However due to the restructuring of the LumiRank 2023's methodology, the tournament was only ranked as a national on the LumiRank's TTS. This ranking stirred up controversy on Twitter; some players believed the high entrants count was suffice to consider the tournament a major, while other players pointed out how the entrants number was misleading due to the lack of top-level talent in attendance.
Several notable upsets took place on the first day of singles, including three players seeded in the top 8: #18 seed ATATA upset #2 seed ApolloKage 3-1 (upset factor 7), #36 seed Sonido upset #4 seed Chase 3-2 (upset factor 7), and #74 seed HammerBro upset #7 seed Goblin 3-2 (upset factor 7). In addition, #20 seed Skar fell to #109 seed Lagiakai 2-1 (upset factor 5) and #212 seed ADDICT 2-0 (upset factor 7) to place 129th.
The second day of singles saw strong runs from both #16 seed Doorstop and #19 seed omega. After falling to MuteAce, Doorstop defeated Chase 3-2 (upset factor 4) and #6 seed Lima 3-2 (upset factor 3) to place 5th. Similarly, omega defeated Lima 3-1 (upset factor 3) and #10 seed 3-1 IcyMist before falling to #5 seed Aaron 1-3 and #1 seed MuteAce 0-3 to place 3rd. Conversely, ApolloKage fell to #8 seed LeoN 1-3 (upset factor 4) to place 9th.
Top 8 saw MuteAce fall to Aaron 2-3 (upset factor 4). However in Loser's bracket MuteAce won every single game he played, including 3-0ing Aaron in both sets of Grand Finals, to win the event.
