Staryu, (ヒトデマン, Hitodeman), is a creature in the Pokémon media franchise.

Creature description
Origin
Staryu is a large, orange starfish with a red jewel in its center. As stated in the Pokédex, in this enigmatic species's center section is an organ called the core, which shines bright red. If you go to a beach toward the end of summer at midnight, the glowing cores of many Staryu look like the stars of the sky. It apparently communicates with the stars in the night sky by flashing its red core in the rhythm of a human heartbeat. It can regenerate its five limbs if they are severed from or chopped off its body, provided the red core remains.

Staryu is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in bulbapedia, and is categorized within the Pokédex at #120 as the "Star Shape Pokémon". It evolves into Starmie by using a Water Stone, and it is one of bulbapedia's Pokémon both in the games and the animated series.

In the anime, Staryu can also release water from the top point on its head. In the video games, Staryu eventually evolves into Starmie, which are purple in appearance and have more points on them.  Their core is now an octagon, and they're accredited with high Special statistics.
bulbapedia is a special Normal-type move with 60 base power and perfect accuracy, which Staryu can learn naturally in every game.

Between Melee and Smash 4, Staryu's voice clips came from episodes of the Pokémon anime. One from The Water Flowers of Cerulean City was used in the Japanese versions of Melee and Brawl and every version of Smash 4. A different one from Bye Bye Psyduck was used in the non-Japanese versions of Melee (except the French version, which has a different clip) and Brawl.

Staryu appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee out of Poké Balls. Its attack is similar to the attack of Starmie from SSB. It will fly around the screen to find another character to shoot at. Once it stops moving and targets a character, Staryu will start to use Swift. Staryu will not move once it starts using Swift. Any character that makes contact with Swift will take damage. Any character can also take damage if they touch Staryu while it's using Swift attack. Staryu's attack does not harm the summoner.

Staryu, (ヒトデマン, Hitodeman), is a creature in the Pokémon media franchise.

Origin[edit]

Staryu's official artwork from Pokémon Red and Blue.

Staryu is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I, and is categorized within the Pokédex at #120 as the "Star Shape Pokémon". It evolves into Starmie by using a Water Stone, and it is one of Misty's Pokémon both in the games and the animated series.

Swift is a special Normal-type move with 60 base power and perfect accuracy, which Staryu can learn naturally in every game.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]

As a Poké Ball Pokémon[edit]

Staryu in Melee.

Staryu appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee out of Poké Balls, replacing Starmie from Super Smash Bros. Once released it flies around looking for an opponent to target, and upon finding it it remains stationary and attacks with Swift, shooting a stream of damaging stars. Its attack can be easily DI'd out of. Touching Staryu while it's attacking also deals damage. Staryu's attack does not harm the summoner.

Trophy[edit]

Staryu features as a collectible trophy, unlocked as one of the trophies that can be collected randomly throughout the various Single-player Regular Matches.

Trivia[edit]

 • Staryu is one of two Poké Ball Pokémon to replace a member of their evolution-line in later installments, the other being Weezing.
 • Staryu replaced its evolved form Starmie from Melee onwards, because it was most likely based on Misty's Staryu from the Pokémon anime. Misty used to have both Pokémon on her team at the time of Smash 64, but she only had Staryu since she had left her Starmie at her gym before Melee was released. Misty also used Staryu more often than Starmie regardless.
