Articuno (フリーザー, Furīzā, Freezer in Japanese language versions) is a fictional creature in the Pokémon media franchise.
Creature description
Articuno is one of the three legendary birds whose specific element is ice. It is a large bird that has enourmous wings that are all blue. The outer lining of its wings are a slight grayish-white color as well as its stomach. Frost can be seen around Articuno as it flies. In Pokémon Red, Pokémon Blue, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen versions, Articuno appears at the Seaform Islands. It is a ice and flying-type Pokémon, and is one of the three legendary birds. It's first appearance was on Pokémon Red and Blue versions.
In Super Smash Bros. Melee
As a Poké Ball Pokémon
Articuno is a legendary Pokémon that appears out of Poké Balls in Melee. Articuno's appearance is rare since it is a legendary Pokémon. Its chance of appearing out of a Poké Ball is doubled in the event match Legendary Pokémon. Articuno uses Sheer Cold as its attack, where it will unleash a blast of ice from its body. Any character that is in Sheer Cold's attack radius will take damage and be frozen for a few seconds, much like being affected by a Freezie. Characters that are also affected by Articuno's Sheer Cold will be sent towards the top of the screen; lighter characters will have a good chance of dying at low percentages from this attack. Articuno's attack does not harm the summoner.
As a trophy
Articuno features as a collectible trophy, unlocked as one of the 100+ trophies that can be collected randomly during normal play, such as in the Trophy Lottery and throughout the various Single-player Regular Matches. It reads as follows:
- Articuno
- Clouds gather, the barometer plunges, and fresh snow falls from the frigid air when this legendary Pokémon takes wing. Graceful and elegant, it boasts long tail feathers that flap in the wind and are lovely to behold. As would be expected, its combat moves are based on its cold nature; they include Ice Beam and Blizzard. (Pokémon Red & Blue 09/98)
Trivia
Articuno's name comes from the words artic and uno the spanish word for one, for it is supposed to be the first of three legendary birds, Zapdos being second and Moltres being third.
