MD/VA Melee Power Rankings

Where are the updates? Smashboards link? Or is it done by facebook like what NorCal does?--BrianDon't try me!Falco.gif 03:35, 7 June 2013 (EDT)

http://smashboards.com/threads/the-mdva-melee-power-rankings.335541/ Here's the link to the Power Rankings. Unlike most PRs, there's no panel; instead, they use the Glicko rating system, which means the PR is updated after every tournament. PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 21:57, 8 June 2013 (EDT)

Mango for best Falco?

Yes, Mango has a positive record over PP in both total matches and the Falco ditto, but I'm not sure that solidifies him as the absolute best Falco, because PP is alot more consistent with Falco, winning more tournaments with Falco alone (Mango will go Fox when driven to win) and even taking a set off Armada with him (something Mango has not done). --BrianDon't try me!Falco.gif 13:43, 17 July 2013 (EDT)

It wasn't me that changed the Falco part, it was an IP. I'll change it, though (since you do make a good point). PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 18:08, 17 July 2013 (EDT)

West Coast Brawl Power Rankings?

Can I have a link to it? Also, these new rankings combines California, Oregon, and Washington? Dots MewtwoMS.png The Left 4 Dead 10:46, 6 August 2013 (EDT)

Here's the link to it. It only includes Top 10 for West Coast, so I can't answer for Oregon and Washington, but California (Tyrant, DEHF, Rich Brown, Havok, mikeHAZE, Tearbear, KiraFlax, and SlayerZ) and Nevada (FOW and Z) are on it. PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 10:52, 6 August 2013 (EDT)

Superboomfan

Do you think Superboomfan's Fox is notable enough to be listed as his second Smash 64 character? Scr7Wolfsig.png =D 16:14, 22 August 2013 (EDT)

I'd say so, yeah. I've seen him use Fox a lot lately, so I'll add it on. PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 19:11, 22 August 2013 (EDT)

NY/NJ Melee Rankings

Where did you find them? Smashboards is down.--BrianDon't try me!Falco.gif 00:29, 2 September 2013 (EDT)

Pound V information

Do you have any idea where information about it can be found? I did a Google search and could only find the results threads. Awesome Cardinal 2000 22:37, 8 October 2013 (EDT)

I was personally there myself, so I can tell you some things that happened, although in particular, 2 things I'd like to mention are the prize money incident and the Melee bracket. For the former, the info can be found here (feel free to add this info to the article, as I won't be immediately able to do it). As for the Melee bracket, while it was never actually posted, I managed to gather info from the SSBPD site about matches while it was still up about matches that happened (this was almost a year ago) and successfully recreated the bracket, which is right here. PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 04:06, 9 October 2013 (EDT)

Thanks for the bracket image, that really helps us a lot. Do you know who hosted it, the venue, stuff like that? Also, is ChuDat's name spelled with a space or not? Awesome Cardinal 2000 20:23, 12 October 2013 (EDT)
Plank was the host. As for Chu Dat, I often see his name in results threads with no space, but there's also a lot of videos on YouTube (as well as the page on here) that have a space. PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 22:14, 13 October 2013 (EDT)

Do you believe Nintendo means to kill Melee with Smash 4?

Per headline. --BrianDon't try me!Falco.gif 03:00, 30 May 2014 (EDT)

While Nintendo will obviously do their best to promote their newest Smash game, I don't believe Nintendo is trying to kill Melee (and if they supposedly were, I doubt it would last long). There will always be dedicated players for Melee and I'm sure Nintendo recognizes that at this point, seeing as how there are 13 players who primarily (or only) play Melee over the other games in the Invitational, with 2 Brawl players (although ZeRo also plays Melee as well) and, oddly enough, one PM-exclusive player. I don't see Nintendo performing a similar stunt as they did last year, given the extreme amount of backlash they've received in response. PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 03:25, 30 May 2014 (EDT)

What's been happening with CT?

What was the basis for M2k and Armada leaving CT and going to P4K? Also why is Vinnie not part of roster anymore? Does Isai still stream on Tuesdays?--BrianDon't try me!Falco.gif 01:05, 23 June 2014 (EDT)

Chibo reportedly kicked them both off for their affiliation to EMP (an organization which is widely known to be shady within the FGC), although M2K insists that he told Chibo that he was leaving for P4K. Here's some info about why Vinnie left and some info on P4K as a "sponsor". As for Isai, he hasn't streamed in over a month. PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 01:14, 23 June 2014 (EDT)

On User:Fabled's user page...

I'm aware of the background behind his userpage. I was the one who put up the original speedy delete tag on the smasher page, ferchrissakes.

Now, per our guidelines on userpages, falsehoods are not necessarily something one needs to refrain from adding to their userpage:

...saying "i is the best smasher in teh world" is fine, because it's most likely humourous.

As such, while Fabled is not allowed to include such falsehoods in the mainspace or the smasherspace, it is quite fine to allow him to include them on his userpage. It's plainly nonsense, but hey, it's not like everything on userpages are supposed to be 100% fact.

He technically created the information there, anyways.

A Question

Hey man, I have a question. Let's say a player at a tournament wins all of his sets using two different characters, beating all of his opponents 2-0 until just before finals, where he's beaten. The first match he uses Fox, the second he uses Marth to be safe (the opponent is using Samus or something). The player goes on to win a lot more but again doesn't make it into finals, and is listed accordingly on the tournament's page on this wiki. I remember you saying that the icon placed next to a smasher's link on tournament pages should always be of the character he won sets with, not just of any characters he used. So would we place the icon of both Fox and Marth next to his name, only Marth's, or neither? Blue Ninjakoopa 15:11, 1 August 2014 (EDT)

Both. "Winning sets" doesn't necessarily mean "closing out a set with a certain character"; all characters that helped to win the set for the player are equally accounted for in character usage. (For example, let's say Mew2King won Game 1 against someone with Sheik, lost Game 2 with Sheik, won Game 3 with Marth, lost Game 4 with Marth, and won Game 5 with Fox. All 3 of his characters played a part in his victory for that particular set, so they would all be added next to his name). PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 15:22, 1 August 2014 (EDT)

Nintendude vs. M2K

What characters did M2K use in those two sets? Scr7Scr7 sig.png(talk · contribs) 18:12, 13 September 2014 (EDT)

Sheik, Fox, and Peach (although M2K also pulled out Fox one game and won). Here's the timestamp to Grand Finals. Trust me, I wouldn't have listed the win if they weren't M2K's real characters. PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 18:18, 13 September 2014 (EDT)

question.

Which smasher is more deserving of the number 6 spot: Axe or Leffen? Keep in mind Axe lost to Wizzrobe/Zhu at Zenith, and Leffen lost to Ice at HST2. Chilex (talk) 23:08, 30 September 2014 (EDT)

If I recall correctly, I believe Axe has overall had more losses to non-Top 5 members than Leffen has throughout this year. This list may not necessarily be complete for either of these players, by the way... (Axe: Leffen x2, SFAT x3, Fiction, Wizzrobe, Zhu, and Colbol)/(Leffen: Ice x2, Hax, and Silent Wolf). On top of that, Leffen also has wins against 3/5 of the Top 5 this year (Hungrybox, Armada, and PPMD), while Axe has 2/5 (Mew2King and Hungrybox). Questions regarding TioPro

I figured since you obviously know more about this tournament thing than I do, you'd be a good user to ask for this.

Currently, our TioPro page claims that it is the preferred method of creating brackets and such for tournaments. However, given the more recent popularity Challonge in recent years, I am inclined to believe this information is outdated. Can you clear this up, and, if possible, edit the page to clarify this?

That's all.

The Gentleman's Rule

I have an effectively finished draft detailling the ruling. However, I don't know if it deserves its own page or if it should be added to our existing page on Dave's Stupid Rule, under the "Variations" subheader. I figured I'd just ask for your input again, and also partially because the main editor of the DSR page (this bloke) has been inactive for a few weeks now.

That's all.

--- Monsieur Crow, Author Extraordinaire, 02:45, 27 December 2014 (EST)

I think it would be okay under the "Variations" subheader, since that's the main thing the Gentleman's Rule is used for. I like the draft, by the way. :) PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 08:22, 27 December 2014 (EST)

Is Leon actually a notable Snake?

On the page of notable Snakes, all of the ones currently there fall under one or more categories in addition to achieving results in tourney:

1. They helped to develop the Snake metagame to some extent and were early Snake players (E.G. FlashingFire, Sago, Jonny Westside)

1.5. They're Rolex or Prof.

2. They seem to understand Snake to a deeper level than most Snake players do (E.G. Morks. No gameplay is available online as far as I can see, though I assure you he was up to date with the Snake metagame.)

3. I'm still not sure whether or not they belong on the list (E.G. MVD)

I've analyzed Leon's gameplay many times over. He doesn't belong on #1 (According to Youtube he was a former Marth player just a little more than half a year ago, or just counterpicks against Snake which just implies that he's worse than TorontoJoe) or #1.5 (for obvious reasons), and he doesn't appear to understand Snake much at all (no evidence of aerial glide tosses, DACUS, or any approach other than dash attack as of 3 months ago), to the point where I question whether or not he'd be better off playing some other character like Sheik. The most advanced thing he did was a walltech B-reverse grenade, which would've made for a great gfycat if it were a character like Falcon, but in that scenario (C4 recovery at a very high percent, ZSS on stage waiting at the ledge doing nothing), if he knew his stuff a walltech B-reverse cypher would have been objectively better. Long story short, he doesn't seem to know much about the optimal Snake meta.

I divide into the aforementioned 3 categories (1, 1.5, and 2) because otherwise with the submain meta in Melee we'd have dozens of players on each section for the high tiers, and, as previously mentioned, I really think Leon would do better with another character (He has a Marth, doesn't he?). If we need to put him on a page, I say we shove him on the Marth page, since I really wouldn't suggest that newcomers watch Leon to learn Snake.

Your thoughts?

BND (talk) 22:43, 15 March 2015 (EDT)

Shouldn't there be a 4th category (winning tournaments)? He has plenty of videos here under "Snake", and has clearly been winning several tournaments in Europe. If anything, playing off of fundamentals is a good thing. (Also, in regards to your edit summary, Ally has been a top player in PM since 2014, as his Top 8 finish at Apex 2014 clearly shows). Leon may not win in the prettiest way, but he does win. In regards to MVD, he's placed well in several PM tournaments as well (including Tipped Off 10), and is also a fundamentally strong player.
I can definitely respect your work in analyzing the gameplay of Snake players, but I firmly believe that Leon deserves to be listed as well. PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 22:58, 15 March 2015 (EDT)
Hrrm; I suppose I am a bit biased towards players who don't explore their character's options, especially towards Snake players (since anybody playing their first match against a competent Snake should have a 0-100 matchup given his unexpected options--heck, even I nearly beat one of the better players in my region since he didn't have much matchup experience, and I SDed and got fthrown -> dair spiked at low percents all over the place).
In that case, we'll wait and see. I really think Leon's Snake is a bit fraudulent as it is and don't think he'd would fare well against anybody who knows anything about Snake's moveset, but if he continues to rank high in Europe, then I'll stay quiet. BND (talk) 01:33, 16 March 2015 (EDT)

Nairo

He confirms that he uses zelda very much offstream and still mains her on smash boards. He hasn't used Robin much in tournament and uses Zelda much more. He used her at his last 5 tournaments. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Macchiato (talkcontribs) 16:58, 5 April 2015‎

1. You should've replied on your talk page, not post on mine.
2. Looking at Nairo's recent posts on SmashBoards, the only thing I saw was that he used Zelda vs. MikeKirby offstream at KTAR XII and that he usually goes Zelda vs. Villager, but didn't use her against ADHD. Neither of those statements means that he "mains" her. You're also going to need to provide a source for that "last 5 tournaments" claim, because the most recent tournament he talked about on Twitter, he stated that he used ZSS/Dark Pit/Robin/Little Mac. PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 17:24, 5 April 2015 (EDT)

Yes but he said a while back he mained Zelda, ZSS, dark pit and Robin. Also he said that many of the tournaments rankings put the wrong main. Can we just put all 4 of them on the main section

ZeRo and country affiliation

Not that I'm doubting you, but did ZeRo specify that he wants to be credited as a USA player as opposed to a Chilean one? If so, do you have a source of him stating that? Miles (talk) 17:07, 2 July 2015 (EDT)

I'm not sure if ZeRo specifically said if he wanted to be credited as a USA player, but I know that I've had a couple of exchanges regarding his current residence. Back in May 2014 (where ZeRo had been staying on the East Coast for 6 months by then), I asked him if he had moved to the States or if he was just there for the remainder of 2014, and he clarified that it was the latter (and he did go back to Chile after The Big House 4). I asked him again later in March 2015 after hearing from others that ZeRo officially moved to the States, and he did confirm that he was living in Arizona with Mew2King (at the time, anyway; he's living in SoCal with Sky now). Hope I've cleared a few things up, at least. PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 17:40, 2 July 2015 (EDT)
Partially. I'm still not totally sure whether crediting him as a USA player or a Chilean one is more accurate, but I'll leave that to your discretion since you seem more on top of the situation than I am. Miles (talk) 17:45, 2 July 2015 (EDT)
You could say that ZeRo is an American player of Chilean decent. :P Dots (talk) Mega Man X SNES sprite.png The Marine 19:14, 2 July 2015 (EDT)
Well, if there was ever any doubt about ZeRo's opinion on what country he believes he should be affiliated with, this should clear things up. PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 19:46, 10 July 2015 (EDT)
Quite clearly. Thanks. Miles (talk) 20:35, 10 July 2015 (EDT)

We're not Wikipedia, we're SmashWiki. Likewise, all of those things are very much unrelated to Smash. If we're using Wikipedia as an example, though, how about Super Battle Opera (which, until its discontinuation, was considered to be the 2nd-most prestigious fighting game tournament after EVO), Capcom Cup (which arguably rivals EVO as the premier Street Fighter tournament now), and even Apex itself? There are often times where "the" just seems misplaced. PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 13:01, 12 August 2015 (EDT)
Yeah, in general tournament names are proper nouns that shouldn't have "the" attached. Miles (talk) 14:37, 12 August 2015 (EDT)
I actually followed the list "Sport and Recreation Featured Articles" of Wikipedia for writing standards on those pages. They all use the before naming the event in question, except when the event already has "the" in its name, like The International Dota 2 Championship. The pages you mentioned don't follow the same standard, but I honestly think they should. It's simply weird when we start a event page without it. PFFP (talk) 17:33, 12 August 2015 (EDT)
We're not Wikipedia, and you shouldn't blindly follow their standards on SmashWiki. Miles (talk) 17:37, 12 August 2015 (EDT)

DVDA tournament series page

So, I want to create a page for the Double Vegas Down Attack series, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea to name the page "Double Vegas Down Attack (tournament series)" or simply "DVDA (tournament series)", since that's how they tag all events. If we go with "DVDA (tournament series)", the summary would star like this:

The DVDA, oficially Double Vegas Down Attack, is a...

or

The Double Vegas Down Attack, or simply DVDA, is a...

My concern comes from the effort to list all events on the template navigation and the eventual tournament series page. They started as "Double Vegas Down A" and now are "Double Vegas Down Attack", but it was always called "DVDA" anyway. I think it would be best if we rename each event as "DVDA number" and on the intro paragraph we name the event correctly, like each EVO edition.

DVDA 5, officially Double Vegas Down Attack #5: Golden Fighting Rings, was the...

Talked with Miles about this and now I'm here. So, what do you think? PFFP (talk) 22:51, 15 August 2015 (EDT)

Yeah, to my understanding, it's more or less always been referred to by DVDA, so I can agree with the rename. PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 11:45, 16 August 2015 (EDT)
Ok, gonna create the page as DVDA (tournament series) and make the change on the current pages for each individual event, before completing the list with all 11 DVDAs. PFFP (talk) 13:02, 16 August 2015 (EDT)

Video results

While working on the Combo Breaker page it hit me that we list results and brackets when available, but very very rarely we add videos to the page. Nowsdays almost every single big tournament records their top 8, so why not add Grand Finals videos (or more) on the results section? Right bellow Brackets and Entrants? Like this:

(1,869 entrants)
Grand Finals

1st Sweden Armada Fox (SSBM)Peach (SSBM) $11,214
2nd USA Hungrybox Jigglypuff (SSBM) $3,738

PFFP (talk) 22:37, 17 August 2015 (EDT)

I could definitely agree with Grand Finals at the very least, or even a link to vods.co (which is a great source for Smash VODs). PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 22:43, 17 August 2015 (EDT)

I love stats and I think they're important. That's why I created the list of largest smash tournaments. To not only organize multiple pages here on the subject of "what's a large tournament" but also to keep track of the scene growth across the years. Now, we all know Melee's inclusion on EVO 2013 had a positive impact on overall tournament attendance, but there's no hard data on that.
What I want to do is basically a copy of this graph, but with tournament attendance, where:
  • Seasons = Years
  • Episodes = The top 10 (or 15) largest smash tournaments of that year
  • Average = average tournament attendance on each year with a line showing overall growth

PFFP (talk) 19:55, 27 August 2015 (EDT)

That's a big ask. We would actually need a graphing extension for that, and (I think) only Toomai can implement this. Serpent King (talk) 20:03, 27 August 2015 (EDT)
Actually, the original one (on Wikipedia) doesn't use a extension. The graph os simply a image uploaded, while the table is a simple template. But I suck at excel graphs. All I have now is a shit graph and a list of the 15 largest melee tournaments from 2013, 2014 and 2015 (so far).PFFP (talk) 20:08, 27 August 2015 (EDT)
This won't work as our tournaments are getting larger and larger, thus this graph would be everchanging. We would need a way to easily change the graph at a moments notice (like a template from an extension). Serpent King (talk) 20:11, 27 August 2015 (EDT)
If the extension is out of question, and tournament numbers are always changing, this graph could be updated only once a year, after the end of that year tournament season. But, if a graph is feasible, I don't see why not we at least try it. Again, this information os hard data on overall scene growth, this is important on the long run, when specific data for each event (pre 2011) gets more and more hard to find. This also could gather more interest on the page, which could help us gather more data worldwide.PFFP (talk) 20:23, 27 August 2015 (EDT)
I'm not really sure. What do you think, Nyargleblargle? Serpent King (talk) 20:49, 27 August 2015 (EDT)

The largest tournament by year table seems adequate to me; this seems like high-maintenance bloat. Miles (talk) 20:53, 27 August 2015 (EDT)

Which one?

I figured you'd be the right person to ask about this. There currently exist two pages with identical information. Which one should belong? Aidanzapunksignature.pngAidan, Master of Speed and AuraAidanzapunkSignaturesmall.PNG 08:48, 4 September 2015 (EDT)

I think Quetzalcoatl should stay, especially considering the fact that the only page on the wiki that has a link to Quetz is, funnily enough, my talk page. :P PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 09:03, 4 September 2015 (EDT)
Alright, just making sure. :P Aidanzapunksignature.pngAidan, Master of Speed and AuraAidanzapunkSignaturesmall.PNG 09:06, 4 September 2015 (EDT)

About that reverted edit...

He won vs Fatality in a money match at Evo, got 17th at Super Smash Con... I don't understand your point about Doom at all. 98.157.202.185 15:55, 22 September 2015 (EDT)
I've also seen a few locals where Doom did not place highly at, hence what I meant by consistency. Citing an old tournament set where Doom beat Nairo's relatively new ZSS isn't really the best type of proof for being a "top professional". The money match better supports your claim, though. I mainly reverted it due to feeling that he wasn't consistent enough overall, but I'm not opposed to it entirely. PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 16:37, 22 September 2015 (EDT)
Also, after looking at pool and bracket results for Super Smash Con, I don't think the 17th means much. He lost to Ribs and MVD (MVD isn't a bad loss by any means, but Ribs is a bit more questionable), and didn't exactly beat any top players to get there. PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 16:55, 22 September 2015 (EDT)
Ah, ok. Thank you for clearing that. 98.157.202.185 19:44, 24 September 2015 (EDT)

Mango

I don't know about you, but I am getting tired of removing Mango's Brawl main from his infobox. I have added a note there so hopefully, this will not happen again. SerpentKing (talk) 19:42, 8 October 2015 (EDT)

Tournament legal (SSB4)

I've drafted a version of this page in my userspace, and I'd appreciate if you, as someone more actively knowledgeable about competitive SSB4 play, could check it to make sure I represented the situation accurately (and if not, fix it accordingly). Thanks. Miles (talk) 15:24, 14 October 2015 (EDT)

Unrelated but separate request I'd make, if you're willing/available: if there's anything in this category that you think is worth saving, I'd appreciate if you went through and untagged them or commented. I'd like to clean out the mess of those and want to get an opinion from someone more knowledgeable than I on competitive play. Miles (talk) 02:26, 21 October 2015 (EDT)

Just an FYI about that undo.

I was assuming that ZeRo had 56 wins in a row all this time. Sorry for that silly undo on my part. (Don't worry, I won't use rollback to enhance my ability to fight, I promise.) INoMedssig.png INoMed (Talk • Contribs) 10:34, 20 October 2015 (EDT)

To be fair, this all started because I saw a link on Facebook mentioning how ZeRo had a 56 tourney streak. ...It seems I was wrong. Aidanzapunksignature.pngAidan, Master of Speed and AuraAidanzapunkSignaturesmall.PNG 11:04, 20 October 2015 (EDT)

Yanky?

Are you convinced of the notability of this page? I'm asking because I'm questioning whether or not I should re-add the notability tag. John John3637881 Signature.png PK SMAAAASH!! 18:41, 27 October 2015 (EDT)

To be honest, I'm not convinced at all. Out of the 4 brackets listed on the page, only one of them had several recognizable players, and he only ended up getting 33rd there. The other 3 tournaments didn't have anyone notable, as far as I'm aware. I support re-adding the notability tag. PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 20:28, 27 October 2015 (EDT)
I guess I'll re-add the tag then. What about NCS October Tourney? A lot of seemingly notable players participated, but there were only 20 entrants. John John3637881 Signature.png PK SMAAAASH!! 23:39, 27 October 2015 (EDT)

I'd like some help.

So there are as of now 117 (I think) Smasher pages with deprecated code. If you can, can you aid me in cleaning it up? Ganonmew, The TERRIFYING Evil Clone 18:35, 31 October 2015 (EDT)

Would you mind...

Considering how there's 126 pages under this category, would you mind running through this? AidanzapunkSig1.pngAidan, the Wandering Space WarriorAidanzapunkSig2.png 10:24, 3 November 2015 (EST)

SW:1RV

I recommend you heed your own advice. Nyargleblargle.pngNyargleblargle (Talk | Contribs) 07:18, 16 November 2015 (EST)

Fair enough, I'll stop reverting. If it's okay with you, though, I would like to request the page being protected from editing for the time being (at least until this is settled). PokemonMasterJamal3 (talk) 07:20, 16 November 2015 (EST)
