Final Smash | Mega Evolution |
Charizard, known in Japan as Lizardon (リザードン, Rizādon), returns as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. 4, revealed with Greninja in a trailer during the April 8th, 2014 Super Smash Bros. Direct. Unlike in Brawl, where it was used as one of Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon, it is now a stand-alone character. Charizard's skin appears to be a brighter orange and its proportions are more in-line with its recent three-dimensional appearances in the Pokémon franchise. For example, Charizard's fangs are smaller than they were in Brawl, which now makes them more proportional to their size in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y.
Changes from Brawl
Charizard appears to be buffed from Brawl, and the most significant change made to Charizard is that it is no longer part of the Pokémon Trainer, so it is now its own character.
- Charizard is heavier than in Brawl.
- Back throw deals slightly more damage, and has strengthened a little.
- Down aerial is stronger, and deals 1% more damage. It has also been sped up a bit.
- Forward throw is slightly stronger.
- Fly grants much more vertical distance.
- Back aerial is stronger.
- Forward smash has a new animation and is stronger.
- Forward tilt deals less damage.
- Charizard's new forward aerial deals slightly less damage.
- Charizard, along with Pit and Meta Knight, can no longer glide.
- Down smash has an altered animation.
- Rock Smash is now Charizard's down special, replacing Pokémon Change.
- Charizard's new side special is Flare Blitz, which has been described as a very powerful attack. It turns into a fireball and shoots sideways, but will inflict recoil damage on Charizard if it makes contact with an opponent, similar to how it acted in the games.
- The addition of this move now gives Charizard a new recovery option.
- Charizard has a new up throw, where it brings its opponent into the air and crashes them into the ground, similarly to Kirby's up throw. Possibly based on Seismic Toss.
- It deals less damage.
- Up aerial has a somewhat tweaked animation, with Charizard thrusting its head sideways instead of straight up.
- Charizard's new Final Smash is Mega-Evolving into Mega Charizard X.
- Charizard now flaps his wings while dashing.
- Without Pokemon Trainer, all of Charizard's victory poses have changed.

- The iconic Fire/Flying-type Pokémon. Charizard's scorching breath can melt anything in its path. It soars through the air, seeking only worthy foes to test itself against. In Smash Bros., Charizard unleashes the destructive Flare Blitz special move— a move so strong, it even injures the user!
- Charizard (All-Star)
- Charizard's Flamethrower attack can be sustained by holding the button. The flames will gradually die, but a short break will recharge them. Charizard's down special Rock Smash crushes a rock and hits foes with the pieces. Charizard won't flinch while crushing, but others can break the rock...
