The '''Cloaking Device''' is an item in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'' that makes the user invisible. Damage is not dealt while a character is invisible (not even self-damage), but [[knockback]] still applies, meaning invisible characters can still be [[KO]]'d without damage. While invisible, each opponent KO'd will add points for an Invisible KO bonus. The invisibility lasts 10 seconds. [[Slippy Toad|Slippy]] hints in one event match that the Cloaking Device is of his own invention; however, the trophy and look of the device makes reference to ''[[Wikipedia:Perfect Dark|Perfect Dark]]''.

The Cloaking Device made its first appearance in ''Perfect Dark''. The Cloaking Device was an item that uses a refractive field to make whoever is using it invisible. The item is useful as the enemies aren't able to see the player using it; however, when the player fires his or her guns, the person turns visible again. Enemies in ''Perfect Dark'' are also able to use the Cloaking Device. In ''Melee'', the Cloaking Device makes any player who uses it invisible. When a player gets hit by attacks, no damage will be taken, unlike in ''Perfect Dark''. Also, when the player attacks, the invisibility is disrupted, making the player visble for a short period of time. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXrduzNFBjk]

Using names allows an invisible player to easily track themselves, as the tag is still visible while cloaked, and any personal props they use, such as Mario's cape, or Link's [[Hookshot]]. Characters themselves are not completely invisible - the cloak flickers about one every three or four seconds, and the faster a character moves, the more obvious they become (becoming temporarily completely visible when attacking). The transparency effect is generated by environment mapping, which also makes the character's outline visible when in front of any opponent, item, or special effect.
True to its depiction in ''Perfect Dark'', the Cloaking Device turns the user invisble. If playing with a [[name]], the tag will also disappear, and any "props" that a character uses, such as [[Mario]]'s [[Cape]] or [[Link]]'s [[Hookshot]] will also become invisble. In addition, players are unable to take any damage if they are cloaked, and [[recoil damage]] is negated. Characters, however, will still take any [[hitstun]] or [[knockback]] inflicted on them.

While walking or jumping, the background behind the player will appear to "bend" in their shape, and faster movements, such as midair jumps or dashing, will cause the "bends" to become even more visible. While attacking, the player can even become temporarily visible for a brief moment. Regardless of movement, the effects of the cloaking device become more unreliable in the last second of its use.

===In [[Event Match]]es===
Since players are unable to see their own cloaked characters, the primary benefit of the item is the damage immunity. Computer-controlled characters are not affected by the Cloaking Device and continue fighting as if the opponent was not cloaked at all.
[[Event 23: Slippy's Invention]] in ''Melee'' pits the player's character against {{SSBM|Fox}} and {{SSBM|Falco}} on [[Venom]], both of whom are under the effects of a permanent Cloaking Device, albeit more similar in function to Invisible Melee. At the start of the match, [[Slippy Toad]] says, "How's the cloaking device I invented?"; as the description of the match also says "Slippy: With my new device, you guys'll be invisible!", the match implies that Slippy invented the Cloaking Device that is used in ''Melee''.

While the item itself is absent, in ''[[Super Smash Bros. Brawl]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s [[Special Brawl]] mode, a modifier named "Clear" is available. Turning this option on makes all characters invisible, similar to the effect caused through use of the Cloaking Device. However, the Cloaking Device itself does not return (most likely its affiliation with the now-Microsoft-owned [[Rare]]). Unlike the [[Motion-Sensor Bomb]], however, no new item was introduced to replace it.
''Brawl'' itself features [[Co-Op Event 6: Unwanted Suitors]], which acts similarly to Slippy's Invention. In the match, two players, as either {{SSBB|Zelda}} or {{SSBB|Zero Suit Samus}}, need to fight against {{SSBB|Luigi}} and {{SSBB|Captain Falcon}}, both of whom are under the effects of the "Clear" modifier.

Additionally, in [[Co-Op Event 6: Unwanted Suitors]], the opponents will be invisible in the same way.

The Cloaking Device is a transformation item in Super Smash Bros. Melee that makes the user invisible and invincible to raw damage.

Origin

File:CloackingDevicePD.png
A player using a Cloaking Device in Perfect Dark.

The Cloaking Device made its first appearance in Perfect Dark, acting as an item that used a refractive field to make its user invisble. While invaluable if the player wishes to use stealth, using any weapons while using the device causes the player to turn invisible again. Contrary to its depiction in Melee, players who are damaged while cloaked will still take damage; in addition, the device's effects are permanent as long as the player does not fire a weapon.

Operation

Kirby and Peach, cloaked.

True to its depiction in Perfect Dark, the Cloaking Device turns the user invisble. If playing with a name, the tag will also disappear, and any "props" that a character uses, such as Mario's Cape or Link's Hookshot will also become invisble. In addition, players are unable to take any damage if they are cloaked, and recoil damage is negated. Characters, however, will still take any hitstun or knockback inflicted on them.

While standing completely still will make the player completely invisible, movement of any sort disrupts the device's powers.

The cloaking device's effects wear off after ten seconds.

As a Special Melee option

Within's Melee's Special Melee mode, Invisible Melee forces all players to be under the effects of the Cloaking Device; contrary to its usual specifications, however, players still take damage in the mode. Like the item itself, names are also not displayed in the mode.

While the item does not return for Brawl, a "Clear" modifier is available in the revamped Special Brawl mode, acting identically to Invisible Melee.

In Event Matches

Event 23: Slippy's Invention in Melee pits the player's character against Fox and Falco on Venom, both of whom are under the effects of a permanent Cloaking Device, albeit more similar in function to Invisible Melee. At the start of the match, Slippy Toad says, "How's the cloaking device I invented?"; as the description of the match also says "Slippy: With my new device, you guys'll be invisible!", the match implies that Slippy invented the Cloaking Device that is used in Melee.

Brawl itself features Co-Op Event 6: Unwanted Suitors, which acts similarly to Slippy's Invention. In the match, two players, as either Zelda or Zero Suit Samus, need to fight against Luigi and Captain Falcon, both of whom are under the effects of the "Clear" modifier.

Trophy in Melee

Cloaking Device

The Cloaking Device trophy in Melee.

This state-of-the-art camouflage device bends light rays in such a way that players using it appear almost invisible. The device fosters confusion, and players using it will not take damage while cloaked. This does not mean, however, that players become invulnerable, so they can still be sent reeling or flying across the screen, depending on their damage percentages.
