Article on Wikipedia List of characters in the Metal Gear series#Mei Ling

Mei Ling (メイ・リン, Mei Ling) is a character from the third-party Konami stealth game series Metal Gear.

Origin[edit]

Mei Ling is a recurring character in the Metal Gear series. A child prodigy who had a passion for fighter jets, she enrolled in MIT and majored in applied physics, aerial photography and air intelligence in the ROTC program. However, she withdrew from the program due to complications with her BDA and her poor vision failing an aptitude test. While still an undergraduate, she designed the soliton radar system and CODEC that Snake uses extensively in his mission. Mei Ling would eventually be enlisted as a data analyst for Snake's radio support team. In Metal Gear Solid, she gives Snake famous Chinese proverbs when he saves his game, such as "You must cross the river before telling the crocodile it has bad breath." Mei Ling also managed to discover that Master Miller was actually an impostor, but was too late to relay the information to Snake before he unintentionally activated Metal Gear REX. Along with Colonel Roy Campbell, Mei Ling backed up and created a hard copy of all intel from the mission as protection for herself, Campbell and Snake in case they are falsely accused of treason.

After the events on Shadow Moses Island, Mei Ling transfered to the Soldier Systems Center as a researcher. Her function as the one who saves the game is taken over by Otacon in Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, but she does briefly cameo when Otacon mangles one of her proverbs. After losing her position as a researcher due to the events of Sons of Liberty, something Snake correctly predicted would happen, Mei Ling transfered to the Navy. By the events of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, she is the captain of the USS Missouri, a decommissioned navy battleship that had been turned into a museum and then re-instated as a training vessel. The Missouri engaged the battleship Outer Haven during the final conflict. After the mission, Mei Ling served as a bridesmaid to Meryl Silverburgh, who would marry Johnny Sasaki. Mei Ling witnessed Meryl and Roy Campbell, her biological father, reunite after being estranged for many years, and broke down in tears because of it. She was last seen attempting the bouquet toss, but lost to the pet monkey of Drebin 893, much to her annoyance.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

Main article: Codec Conversations

Mei Ling appears in the Shadow Moses Island stage and communicates with Snake through his Smash Taunt, which displays a codec message in which Snake speaks with Otacon, Mei Ling or Roy Campbell about a character he is fighting during the match. He speaks with Mei Ling about Peach, Sheik, Toon Link, Zero Suit Samus, Pikachu, Lucario, Ice Climbers, Marth, Lucas, Olimar, and Meta Knight.
