Mythra (ヒカリ, Hikari) is one of the main protagonists of Monolith Soft's Xenoblade Chronicles 2, the third entry in the Xenoblade Chronicles series.
After making a cameo as a spirit in the base version of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mythra transitioned into a playable character in Ultimate as the fifth character of Fighters Pass Vol. 2.
Origin[edit]
Mythra is a Blade, a personification of a weapon, whose purpose is to fight alongside a Driver in the world of Alrest. She is also the Aegis, a specific legendary Blade said to have much grander powers. She first appears when her Driver Rex finds himself in way too deep in a fight against the forces of Torna, who are trying to capture Pyra so they can wipe out the people of Alrest. As Rex foolishly continues fighting despite the situation, Pyra suddenly transforms into Mythra, revealing that Pyra is actually an alternate personality that Mythra created. In the aftermath of the fight, it comes out that she created Pyra and sealed herself away out of guilt and regret over what she did to Alrest in the war five hundred years ago. Eventually, Rex connects with both Pyra and Mythra well enough that their trust produces a third form, Pneuma, who is able to bestow Rex with additional "Master Driver" powers over Blades and the world at large.
Mythra was first awoken by the hero Addam in the war five hundred years ago, whose personal thoughts and dreams shaped her appearance and personality. She speaks her mind, fights with brute force rather than finesse, and is a comically terrible cook. Despite this, she does have a sensitive side, though it takes Rex a lot of effort to tease it out. While she brandished them freely at first, she is now afraid of her powers, and is willing to go a long way to ensure they cannot be misused.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
As a playable character[edit]
During Ultimate's development, Masahiro Sakurai considered adding characters from ARMS and Xenoblade Chronicles 2; however, as their games were announced after he completed the roster early in development in order to secure all returning fighters, he passed them over, and Sakurai chose to have Mythra be a spirit instead. Like Shulk's English voice actor Adam Howden for Super Smash Bros. 4, on June 29, 2020, before her official reveal, Mythra's English voice actress, Skye Bennett, had posted on her Twitter that she had done recording for a game that has "lots of screaming". A little over two years after the game's release, Mythra would be announced as the tenth DLC fighter alongside Pyra in the February 17, 2021 Nintendo Direct. A character showcase was streamed March 4th, 2021 (March 5th, 2021 in some time zones), with Mythra being released later that same day.
Spirits[edit]
Fighter spirit[edit]
Support spirit[edit]
Prior to the release of the Pyra/Mythra fighters, Mythra appeared as a Legend-class support spirit.
In Adventure Mode: World of Light, Mythra is presumably one of the countless spirits captured by Galeem during his takeover of the universe. After Galeem's defeat, Dharkon takes control of Galeem's spirits, including Mythra. After Dharkon's defeat, he flees to the final world, with Galeem following soon after. In the final world, Galeem and Dharkon wage war against each other using their captured spirits, with Galeem taking control of Mythra.
Mythra uses a female Corrin puppet fighter and is fought on the Gaur Plain's Battlefield form. She is fought along a Shulk puppet fighter representing Rex. During the battle, Corrin starts off with an enhanced Beam Sword, referencing Mythra's status as a Light Blade.

Trivia[edit]
- Mythra and Pyra are the only two-in-one DLC fighters.
- Mythra's spirits have been censored in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate by removing her cleavage window and giving her a black bodysuit that covers her upper back and legs. This was likely done to avoid raising the game's Japanese age rating, as Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has a higher age rating than Super Smash Bros. Ultimate there.
- Prior to Ultimate's release, this redesign was added into Xenoblade Chronicles 2 as an optional costume for Mythra named Massive Melee Mythra. This redesign was later used for her fighter design.
- Pyra and Mythra are the third and fourth fighters to have debuted on the Nintendo Switch. The first was Byleth (who properly debuted in Fire Emblem: Three Houses after they technically debuted in Fire Emblem Heroes) and the second was Min Min.
