Aqua (アクア, Aqua) is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Like with the Pokémon Trainer's Pokémon and Pyra/Mythra, Aqua shares her character slot with Terra and Ventus as a tag-team fighter. Along with Terra and Ventus as well as Sora, Roxas and Riku, she was announced as a surprise DLC fighter as part of the KINGDOM HEARTS Bonus Fighters Pass on April 1, 2021. Aqua is classified as Fighter #92.

Megumi Toyoguchi and Willa Holland reprise their roles as Aqua in Japanese and English, respectively, with new voice clips.

Known information[edit]

  • Aqua is tied to Terra and Ventus as a three-in-one fighter, similar to Pokémon Trainer. Each member of the trio can swap out quickly using their shared down special move, Transporter.
  • Aqua has been described as the "all-rounder" of the trio similar to Ivysaur's role within Pokémon Trainer's team, being a tall semi-lightweight who specializes in zoning and control via magical techniques and with moderately fast attacks and movement speed.
  • Most of Aqua's alternate costumes have her wield the Stormfall Keyblade, however her Anti-Aqua and Armored palette swaps replace it with the Master's Defender.

Moveset[edit]

  • Aqua's double jump animation is based on her Doubleflight ability from Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep.
  • Aqua's roll is based on her Cartwheel ability from her various appearances.
  • Jab - Aqua's basic three-hit combo from her various appearances.
  • Magic Hour - Aqua's down aerial, where she will teleport downward vertically some distance and fall while crashing her Keyblade onto the ground.
  • Barrier Surge - Aqua's dash attack, a move where Aqua careens forward surrounded by a reflective barrier.
  • Spellweaver - Aqua's neutral special move based on her Command Style of the same name. It comes in two variations: tapping the special button will have her float in the air and fire a magical projectile from her Keyblade, while holding it will have her spin around surrounded by a magical force field that can suck enemies in. By default, the tapped version chains into a multi-hit auto-combo that ends with the held version, but it can be canceled early into the held version at any time by holding the special button. Pressing any other button allows Aqua to immediately leave the Spellweaver "stance".
  • Teleport Spike - Aqua's side special move based on the finish command from Birth by Sleep, where she will teleport behind the opponent and launch a small magical orb at them using her Keyblade.
  • Lightbloom - Aqua's up special move based on her ultimate Shotlock from her various Kingdom Hearts appearances, where she will spin in the air while launching volleys of energy at the foe.
  • Teleporter - Aqua's down special move, shared with Terra and Ventus, where she will manifest a teleporter similar to those seen in the Mirage Arena and quickly warp out of battle, with Ventus immediately warping in.
  • Trinity Limit - Aqua's shared Final Smash with Terra and Ventus, where she will raise her Keyblade and generate a magical circle under her feet. If the move connects, Terra and Ventus will enter the battle, and all three will raise their Keyblades, proclaiming "Light!" in unison, and generate a large orb of light above their heads that explodes causes immense damage and knockback.

Classic Mode: A Link to the Future[edit]

Terra/Aqua/Ventus' Classic Mode reflects the major boss battles of their original appearance in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep. It is unique in that during most stages, the player is locked into playing as one of the three Keyblade wielders unless noted otherwise. Pressing Y on the character select screen to choose one of the three only has an effect at two points: which character the player begins with during stage 4 (the Galleom battle), and which character is present during the credits minigame.
