Rise 'N Grind 2023 was a Super Smash Bros. Melee superregional and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate major held in Waco, Texas, USA from October 13th-15th, 2023. This Tournament is the first Major Ultimate Tournament to feature Steve banned from both singles and doubles, which stemmed from several discussions regarding the character's legality.
Tournament summary[edit]
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
The first day saw the biggest upset of the tournament, with #61 seed Skinny the Pooh upsetting #4 seed MkLeo 3-0 (upset factor 8). MkLeo ultimately fell to #7 seed Riddles -- who was also upset early by #23 seed BassMage 3-2 -- to place 17th, once again achieving a worst placement at an Ultimate major since Umebura Japan Major 2019.
Ultimately, only three top 8 seeds made it to top 8: #1 seed Miya, who had signed up for the event mere days before it began; #2 seed Glutonny; and #5 seed MuteAce. #3 seed Tweek disqualified from the event; #6 seed Dabuz was upset by #19 seed Lima 3-1 and #9 seed Anathema 3-2 to place 9th; and #8 seed Kurama lost to Miya before being upset by #22 seed SHADIC 3-1. On the other hand, this tournament saw two Bayonetta players enter top 8 (Lima and Geist), leading several players to joke how the tournament was reminiscent of Smash 4. In addition, the tournament featured three Texas players defending their home turf (MuteAce, Lima, and SHADIC) as well as two Europeans (Glutonny and Tarik, with this being Tarik's first-ever top 8 at an international event, as well as his birthday).
In top 8, Lima upset Glutonny 3-0 (upset factor 7) but fell to Miya in game 5. He ultimately lost the runback to Glutonny 3-0, placing 3rd, his best major performance to date. In Grand Finals, Miya defeated Glutonny 3-1, winning the runback from Scuffed World Tour and taking his first American major victory.
This tournament saw Tarik and Peanut tie the record for the highest placement for Greninja and Little Mac, respectively, at a major, with Tarik tying Lea's 5th place runs at Umebura SP 3 and Umebura SP 6 and Peanut tying Tarakotori's 13th place run at Umebura SP 4.
