While browsing/editing today, I noticed that doubles teams such as El Chocolate Diablo and PewFat weren't in the Team namespace. After another user moved El Chocolate Diablo, I did so for PewFat and others. However, I soon noticed that I was moving these pages over a redirect. Upon further investigation, I realized that XL initially moved doubles teams into the Team namespace when it was created in 2018, but then in 2019 a couple users moved them out of Team and back into the mainspace.
Now noticing the lack of an official policy on the matter, and fearing I may have acted unilaterally too quickly when it came to moving the pages I did, I'm opening up this forum to gauge wider opinion. Perhaps this forum can also bring about more discussion as to the purpose of the Team namespace, and whether or not it may be too broad (as opposed to "Crew," etc. - I know this debate has been had in the past, but that doesn't mean it has to be left in the past/can't be applicable here as well). - When I moved the El Chocolate Diablo page I was under the impression that every article for doubles teams were already under the Team namespace and that El Chocolate Diablo was simply forgotten. Of course once I realized it moved over a redirect I also stopped and checked the history. It seems like a decision was made by two users that doubles teams shouldn't be under the Team namespace. I don't believe there was any consensus for this beyond that. I really see no reason as to why it shouldn't be in the Team namespace. The category itself is called "Teams" after all. Support keeping it in teams. Señor Mexicano (talk) 22:18, June 6, 2021 (EDT)
- Support: Don't see any reason why this shouldn't be in the team namespace, or why they weren't in the first place. Omega Toαd, the Toad Warrior. (I'm the best!) 22:30, June 6, 2021 (EDT)
In my opinion, it would be a bit confusing as to what the namespace really represents. The team namespace has almost always been for crews and sponsors, which I personally don't like either since at a glance, there's no way to tell whether an organization is a crew or team. If we were to move the teams to the team template, I feel like we should also create two separate namespaces for crews or sponsors to clear up the team namespace's messiness. - I agree with you, I think the team namespace isn't clear enough, a doubles team would not be the same as a Esports team, it can cause confusion if these are kept in the same namespace. There should be a way to distinguish these teams as well as crews. Sorry if me and another user executed those actions on our own without any consensus, I won't make any excuse to that. - Not blaming you or anyone at all - I agree with you and C&C that the "Team" namespace lends itself to being too broad. When the original discussion was had in late 2017 (a time during which I was inactive), there was a divide between the namespace being called "Crew" or "Team"; I believe greater specificity with "Crew" and also "Sponsor" would've been the optimal way to go.
- I get where you guys are coming from but the categories are already there to distinguish everything from each other (crew, esports orgs, and doubles teams), although I feel like Category:Teams could use a rename. To the average viewer I also feel like it's fairly simple to distinguish double teams apart from crews or sponsors considering that's the purpose of the first paragraph/sentence. I personally don't see any issue with the way we currently handle the Team namespace considering it encapsulates everything that would be considered a team, but I guess I wouldn't really be opposed to having it split. It does seem like the doubles teams namespace would be a bit underused though. Señor Mexicano (talk) 02:44, June 7, 2021 (EDT)
- After considering what you and Toomai said, I honestly prefer having teams/crews under the Team namespace and sponsors under a Sponsor namespace. While the categories do separate them, most people don't look at the categories when looking at an article, and I feel like it's better to make it obvious whether a organization is which rather than tell people to look at the categories. - Like I said earlier though, most people would be able to establish whether it's an esports org or a crew from the first sentence alone. "x is a professional esports organization" or "x is a crew" are both very straightforward. I feel like having just one Team namespace gives us greater freedom when it comes to adding articles to it, especially when you consider that some organizations serve more of a behind-the-scenes role than being a real sponsor.
