Wobbuffet (ソーナンス, Sonans) is a creature in the Pokémon media franchise.

Origin

Wobbuffet's official artwork from Pokémon Gold and Silver.

Wobbuffet is a Psychic-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II, and is categorized within the Pokédex at #202 as the "Patient Pokémon". It is notable for being, along with its pre-evolution Wynaut, the only Pokémon unable to learn any damaging move whatsoever (with the exception of the emergency move Struggle): its only way to directly damage its opponent is by counterattacking with Counter or Mirror Coat, or forcing a mutual KO with Destiny Bond.

Counter is a Fighting-type move. When its user is hit by an opponent's physical move, it deals double the damage received, without taking into account weaknesses or resistance. Wobbuffet knows the move by default.

As a Poké Ball Pokémon

Wobbuffet in Melee.

Wobbuffet appears as a Poké Ball Pokémon in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Wobbuffet uses Counter as its attack. Wobbuffet rocks back and forth when the player attacks it or hits it with an item. Any character that makes contact with Wobbuffet's Counter will take damage. If Wobbuffet hasn't been hit, contact with it will still cause very minor knockback, but will cause no damage. The power of Wobbuffet's Counter attack varies. If Wobbuffet is hit with a weak attack, it won't wobble a lot. If Wobbuffet is hit with a strong attack, Counter will then cause more damage. Wobbuffet will wobble more intensely if hit with a powerful item. Characters will take more damage if they are hit with a faster wobbling Wobbuffet. Also, characters can get trapped in a Wobbuffet's Counter if it is not too powerful. Wobbuffet's attack harms both opponents and the summoner.

In the Event Match Legendary Pokémon, Wobbuffet is the only non-Legendary Pokémon that will come out of Poké Balls, and while every legendary has their appearance rate doubled, Wobbuffet will appear for the remaining percentage of appearance rate. Wobbuffet's appearance as a common Pokémon in this event match is to discourage other characters from expecting a powerful legendary Pokémon. However, Wobbuffet can be useful in this Event Match. If Wobbuffet is hit with a powerful attack from a legendary Pokémon then it will start to wobble intensely. Characters that have a high damage percentage can be KO'd, with the Fighting Wire Frames that appear in the Event Match also struggling to avoid Counter.

As a trophy

Wobbuffet is featured as a collectible trophy, unlocked as one of the 100+ trophies that can be collected randomly during normal play, such as in the Trophy Lottery and throughout the various Single-player Regular Matches. It reads as follows:

Wobbuffet trophy in Melee.
Wobbuffet

A Patient Pokémon, Wobbuffet lives in darkness to hide its mismatched black tail. Even for a stoic Pokémon, this creature is a testament to self-control; it will not actively attack an opponent. Its Counter and Mirror Coat moves are solely used for reflecting attacks directly back at its antagonist.

Wobbuffet in Brawl.

Wobbuffet returns to reprise its role from Melee, with the only changes being that its head glows pink when stricken and its voice clip changes. Now countering a very strong attack (at least 25% damage, such as a Falcon Punch) should result in an OHKO.

Trophy Description

Wobbuffet trophy in Brawl.
Wobbuffet
A Patient Pokémon. A nocturnal, cave-dwelling creature, Wobbuffet is calm and collected, but it will fight back viciously if its black tail is attacked--this hints at something secretive about its tail. If Wobbuffet is put into battle, the opponent cannot run away or switch. Females have lipsticklike markings around their mouths.
