Notices
The Skill parameter has been removed from Smasher infoboxes, and in its place are the new "Best historical ranking" and "Best tournament result" parameters. SmashWiki needs help adding these new parameters to Smasher infoboxes, refer to the guidelines here for what should be included in these new parameters.
When adding results to Smasher pages, include each tournament's entrant number in addition to the player's placement, and use the {{Trn}} template with the matching game specified. Please also fix old results on Smasher pages that do not abide to this standard. Refer to our Smasher article guidelines to see how results tables should be formatted.

List of flaws in artificial intelligence (PM)

The following is a list of flaws in the artificial intelligence of Project M.

General[edit]

Category Description Character
Attack choices CPUs tend to target the player who has the highest damage more than the others. All
CPUs in general have poorly adapted to Project M's changes to the air dodge mechanics. They will often air dodge when unecessary and leave themselves open to punishes, due to air dodges causing helplessness.
  • They also have a tendency to air dodge when attempting to evade edgeguarders, reguardless of how far away they are from the stage, often causing them to fail a possible recovery.
All
When standing near an edge a CPU may air dodge off the stage attempting to wavedash of the ledge to grab it, instead missing the ledge and self-destructing. All
Recovering CPUs will never attempt to fight off edgeguarders. All
Excluding Jigglypuff, CPUs never use directional air dodges to recover, even if it would be beneficial for certain characters like Ness and Lucas when recovering in narrow spaces. Almost all
CPU Zero Suit Samus never uses Plasma Whip to recover. Additionally when recovering, she almost never uses Plasma Wire in the grappling range, missing the ledge as a result and failing a possible recovery. Zero Suit Samus (SSBB)
CPU Fox often cancels Fox Illusion too early when recovering, causing him to miss the edge. Fox (SSBB)
CPU Lucas normally aims PK Thunder upwards and slightly away from the stage, failing a recovery that was possible if he aimed differently. Lucas (SSBB)
CPU Lucas never uses Rope Snake to recover. Lucas (SSBB)
When facing away from the ledge, CPU Pikachu will never use its second dash of Quick Attack and fail a possible recovery. Pikachu (SSBB)
When recovering from below the stage, CPU Pikachu always aims the second dash of Quick Attack straight upwards. This often causes it to not move close enough to the stage when a different angle (such as straight forward) would have made the recovery successful. Pikachu (SSBB)
Carried over from Brawl CPU Ike does not use Aether to recover unless he is directly below the ledge, often using it too late and failing to recover. Ike (SSBB).
After a CPU Luigi uses Negative Zone, he will spam Fireball until the move ends, regardless of his level. Luigi (SSBB)Pit (SSBB)
CPU Fox, Falco and Wolf at low levels mostly self-destruct when using Landmaster, especially if the target is hanging off of a ledge. At high levels, they instead stay in place and repeatedly perform barrel rolls against opponents grabbing the ledge, which can be easily avoided by planking. Fox (SSBB) Falco (SSBB) Wolf (SSBB)
CPU Yoshi uses Egg Throw to recover. Yoshi (SSBB)
Others CPUs will immediately leave their revival platform upon responding, even if a dangerous event is occurring such as the opponent having a Final Smash. All

Character Specific[edit]

Character Description
Fox (SSBB)Falco (SSBB)Wolf (SSBB) CPU Fox, Falco, and Wolf will often abruptly cut their side specials short when recovering, and fail to make it back on the stage.
Fox (SSBB) CPU Fox will spam short hop lasers when far away from another player. This allows characters with absorbing specials like Ness to easily heal critical damage, or characters with reflectors to reflect the lazers back at him to damage him.
Falco (SSBB) Even in situations where the other player has recovered, CPU Falco will frequently use his down air at the edge of a stage in an edgeguarding attempt, which can be extremely hazardous and often lead to a self-destruct due to Falco's high falling speed.
Mewtwo (SSBM) Lucario (SSBB) When no players are nearby, CPUs Mewtwo and Lucario will indefinitely stay in place charging their respective neutral specials, until another player comes near or attacks with a long range projectile.
Jigglypuff (SSBB) CPU Jigglypuff will often air dodge when launched directly upwards above a player, putting it in a helpless state and leaving it open for punishes.
Pikachu (SSBB) CPU Pikachu tends to spam Thunder against opponents above it, especially when edgeguarding.

Item Related[edit]

Item Description
Smash Ball Whenever a Smash Ball spawns, all CPUs will ignore all other fighters and attack the Smash Ball specifically, only attacking other fighters that get in their way.
CPU Fox, Falco and Wolf are unaware of when Landmaster will end, and will sometimes self-destruct should the transformation end while off-stage.
