oeuf (the French word for "egg") is an in-joke and meme of the SmashWiki IRC and Discord.
Origin[edit]
At some lost moment in the history of SmashWiki's IRC channel, while the wiki was still part of Wikia, an unknown user joined with the nickname of "oeuf". oeuf proceeded to post messages consisting of nothing but the word "oeuf", in varying amounts with interspersed punctuation, such as "oeuf oeuf" or "Oeuf oeuf, oeuf oeuf oeuf?". The messages were not frequent enough to be considered spam, and several users found it amusing enough to imitate the behaviour and have "conversations" in oeuf-speak. oeuf continued to haphazardly visit the IRC channel and post oeufs, not frequent enough to be considered a regular, but common enough that most of the regulars could recognize him. Very rarely, oeuf would post "egg", "ei" (German), and emoticons.
After SmashWiki became independent from Wikia, oeuf visited the IRC less often. Toomai believes that oeuf has not appeared since 2013, though some users have impersonated him since then. However, the usage of "oeuf" as an everyword on the IRC (and later the Discord) continues.
Identity[edit]
It is an open mystery as to who oeuf was (or is). No account has ever been registered on the wiki under such name, and as a common French word it is very difficult to search for it as a username elsewhere.
