Summary[edit]

Super Smash Land's first character, Mario, is an all-around character. With a projectile, good moves, and great vertical KO power, Mario does well against every character. He is used well in all areas.

Strengths[edit]

  • Upwards attack is a great vertical finisher.
  • Downwards move racks up decent damage.
  • Recovery is a viable KO option, albeit weaker than upwards attack.
  • Fireball is good for spacing, bounces off walls.
  • Run attack has a hitbox that stays out long.
  • Forward air attack can meteor smash.
  • Jumps are decent.
  • Downward air attack can assist recovery and deals good damage.
  • Back air attack can string into itself.

Weaknesses[edit]

  • Poor recovery in Recovery move.
  • Upwards attack has some start-up lag.
  • Fireball is slow.
  • Forward air attack has some start-up lag.
  • Run attack leaves him vulnerable.
  • Forward air attack is not a very strong meteor smash.
  • Easily edgeguarded.
  • Down air attack must be mashed and does not provide much distance anyways.

Stages[edit]

Peach's Castle[edit]

Mario is all-around decent on this stage. The platforms provide him KOs at lower percents. He can camp from one platform and then jump to the other to continue camping. He can use the platforms to string back air attacks into each other, and possibly finish off with Recovery. However, if he is knocked down under the sliding platforms, we will, like most characters, lose a stock. In addition, Pikachu can set up upwards attack to Thunder to kill more easily, and Vaporeon's up special is well hidden on the bottom platform.

Dreamland[edit]

This is one of Mario's better stages. Upwards attack kills much earlier on the top platform and the same goes for the other platforms. Mario can use Whispy to his advantage, having Whispy blow the opponent off and Mario forward air attacking to meteor smash the foe. However, going on the top platform is risky with characters like Pikachu and Vaporeon. The side platforms can be used to camp.

Hyrule Castle[edit]

Another one of Mario's better stages, he can easily kill from the top blastline. The slope on the far left provides some cover to Vaporeon's up special, as well as the platforms, making them possibly dangerous to go to if at high percents or even mid percents.

Saffron City[edit]

This stage is all-around, as with before. Electrode can provide useful if Mario manages to knock the opponent towards it. Venusaur can provide useful down on the far left to string upwards attacks as well. Chansey is useful to heal damage. However, the stage provides good cover for Vaporeon's up special.

Tower of Heaven[edit]

A decent stage for Mario. The top platform can be used to KO pretty early. However, the stage may be turned on him if the right conditions are met. Also, the commands may be unsuitable for Mario. They are listed as follows.

"DO NOT TOUCH A LIVING THING"[edit]

The worst case scenario for Mario. His upwards attack becomes totally irrelevant, he cannot do much except for back air attack and Fireball, and he is limited to the higher ground.

"DO NOT WALK LEFT"[edit]

Not much of a problem to Mario. It does not affect him too much.

"DO NOT TOUCH GOLDEN BLOCKS"[edit]

A pretty bad one for Mario. It limits his movement and reduces his ability to vertically KO.

"DO NOT TOUCH BLOCKS FROM THE SIDE"[edit]

Limits Mario's ability to get onto the golden blocks, and can be knocked into the sides of the blocks for a lot of damage.

Underground[edit]

A good one for Mario. The top platforms that go upwards can be used efficiently if one is careful. The bricks can also do that for less risk. However, the bricks can be destroyed, limiting Mario's potential to defeat the foe.

Kirby's Air Ride[edit]

A very good one for Mario. He can use the main platform or top platform to launch enemies into an Air Ride racer with precision, and the top platform KOs earlier. However, the Air Ride racers can prevent him from using the top platform.

Clock Town[edit]

One of Mario's good ones. The spinning circles can be used to efficiently KO foes early. However, it is tough to get the foe up there and Vaporeon can escape easily in this situation.

Lavender Town[edit]

Another good one for Mario. The Haunter and Gastly can help out Mario by providing platforms on which to easily vertically KO. The top platform can help Mario out as well. The platforms also aid his lousy recovery. However, he can be easily read because of this.

Dr. Wily's Castle[edit]

A good stage for Mario under the right circumstances. He can combo upwards attack into missile if timed correctly. The top floating platform and top platform can help him vertically KO. However, since the horizontal blast lines are close to the stage, he can very quickly be taken out.

Battlefield[edit]

Basically Dreamland without Whispy, this is nonetheless a good stage. The blast lines are farther, and although this means that he will have a harder time KOing vertically, he can withstand more punishment. The platforms provide the area for which to KO with his upwards attack.

Overview[edit]

All in all, Mario is a decent character. His strengths clash with his weaknesses, but they make him an easy character to pick up and play. On my current tier list, Mario is ranked 4th out of 6th, on the top of the A TIER.
