Character ballots, or polls, have been used by the developers of the Super Smash Bros. series to gauge interest in future playable characters.

Super Smash Bros. polls

On May 1st, 1999, a poll titled "スマブラ２があったとしたら" was published on the Japanese Super Smash Bros. website. The poll asked users to name characters that they would like to see in a hypothetical Super Smash Bros. 2. The poll ran until May 31st, 1999 and had over 600 responses.

Of the 20 top characters voted for, Bowser, Peach, Ganondorf, Mewtwo, and Marth would make an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

A separate poll would also be hosted by Nintendo Power via Nintendo of America's website. The results to this poll were never revealed.
