Mario woke up. He new that he had been in trophy state for a while, but all that wait was worth it. This was the 9th year of the annual Smash Tournament, hosted by Master Hand. And this was the first round. Like always, he was going to face Kirby, the hero from pop star. For some reason, Master Hand had decided that every year's tournament would start with him facing Kirby. Mario understood why; he and Kirby were undeniably the most popular fighters in the arena. Still, he felt that it made the spectators, two of them being the famous princesses Zelda and Peach, think that they were rivals who cherished beating eachother. That was not true. While each of them had won over the other 4 times over the past 8 years, outside of the arena, they were very good friends. Nonetheless, Mario cared about the tournament, and he knew that his abilities weren't strong enough to actually hurt Kirby. Master Hand had made it so that the most he could do is turn Kirby back to trophy form. Deep down, Mario knew that he was not really the hero from the mushroom Kingdom, and that his main purpose was simply to entertain Master Hand. For now, however, he did not think about that.

The announcer shouted the opening words, and Mario faced his opponent. As they started out at opposite ends of the stage, Mario started with some basic projectile spamming with his Fireballs. Kirby rolled past one, and powershielded the next, but the third fireball hit, causing Kirby some damage. Kirby retaliated by jumping in the air and using his forward aerial. This caught Mario off guard and damaged him. Turning around in midair, Kirby was about to use his dreaded back aerial, no doubt to start a wall of pain combo, but Mario was too fast for him. He withdrew a cape, waved it in the air, and Kirby found himself turned around. Mario followed this up with a few tilts, and then charged up a Forward Smash. Kirby avoided it just in time and used his Final Cutter, knocking Mario back slightly. Kirby used his Forward Smash, no doubt to finish him, but Mario used a grab just in time, and back throwed Kirby off the edge. He followed this up with forward aerial meteor smash. However, Kirby meteor canceled using his Up Special, Final Cutter. At this point time seemed to slow down for Mario. What he was about to do next was not something he had ever done before, but it was worth a try. Seemingly out of nowhere, Mario pulled some kind of a backback on himself. At the top of the backback was a head with a nossle at the end. Charging the FLUDD up slightly, he fired a burst of water just in time, knocking the recovering Kirby away from the edge. Kirby plummeted off the edge, falling past the blast lines. Instantly turned into trophy form, Kirby bounced back onto the stage, defeated.

Meanwhile, miles and miles up into the air, an angelic being watched a small orb on a table. The angelic being, Pit, was a big fan of the Smash Bros. Tournament, and he had recently gained permission to join for this year. His first round was not for a while, and he decided he might as well watch the other rounds for some tips.

Back on the Midair Stadium, Mario approached the trophy that lay before him. He realized that in all the previous years, he had simply celebrated after his victory against Kirby. He thought about how Peach didn't like the idea of conflict, and no doubt was always dissapointed whenever he celebrated after his wins. As such, he decided to send a message to the crowd, to let them know that he was more than just a robot fighter. Walking right up to the trophy, he touched it and exerted a small amount of power, releasing Kirby. Both of them shook hands and then waved to the suprisingly cheering crowd. For some reason though, something didn't feel right. Kirby apparently noticed as well, as he stopped celebrating and was looking at the sky. As Mario did the same, he saw the clouds turn purple as a great airship flew over the stadium...
