Sonic the Hedgehog is an unlockable character in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Unlocked by attaining over 20 KOs in Cruel Melee, Sonic acts as the lone representative of the Sonic the Hedgehog universe. Sonic acts as a close approximation to his appearances in his own games; his speed, including air, dashing, and falling speeds are among the highest in Melee, while most of his attacks are centered around jumping. Sonic is currently ranked at 14th on Melee's current tier list. Despite having among the best frame data, the best potential mindgames, and most varied options in Melee's metagame, Sonic suffers from among the worst KOing prowess of all characters, in addition to poor range in most of his attacks. Amid continued improvements to his metagame by smashers such as CPU, however, it has been claimed that Sonic's tier position will likely rise in the future. (more...)
