—Introduction Tagline

Jibanyan & Yo-kai, also known as Nate & Yo-kai or simply Jibanyan or Yo-kai, is a playable "team character" in the entirely fictional Super Smash Bros.: The Next Melee. They were confirmed as unlockable newcomers by Coonfoot on January 20, 2016. Jibanyan, the one that players control, is considered the mascot of the Yo-kai Watch series. During matches, Jibanyan's human friend Nate stands in the background alongside Whisper, his Yo-kai butler, and uses his Yo-kai Watch to summon Yo-kai for special moves. Nate and Whisper coach Jibanyan throughout each match and react to many things he does. When the team is out of stocks or stamina and Jibanyan is no longer able to fight, Nate sadly hangs his head for the rest of the match, while Whisper consoles him. At first glance, this team is similar to that of the Pokémon Trainer, but Jibanyan is never actually switched with another Yo-kai.

Jibanyan, Nate, and Whisper are voiced by Alicyn Packard, Johnny Yong Bosch, and J.W. Terry in the English version, respectively. In the Japanese version, they're voiced by Etsuko Kozakura, Haruka Tomatsu, and Tomokazu Seki, respectively.

Attributes[edit]

Jibanyan is about as tall as Pikachu, but slightly slower. Despite that, he's still fast. His standard attacks are also very quick, somewhat making up for their lack of power. His major weakness is that he's light and easy to send flying. This is all inspired by his stats in the Yo-kai Watch games, where he has high speed, but low power and defense. His most powerful moves are his specials, thanks to other Yo-kai lending a hand in each one. When these Yo-kai become visible, opponents can attack most of them to interrupt their moves. Further more, the opponents' attacks can go right through the Yo-kai and damage Jibanyan. With this in mind, using the Yo-kai as shields is a very poor strategy, unless it's the ones used to the down special, who are actually meant to be shields.

Forward smash Paws of Fury 2% (hit 1), 1.25% (hits 2-9), 3% (hit 10) Jibanyan unleashes a flurry of tiny punches. It hits 10 times, with the last hit having the most knockback. The move's range is short, but it's hard to get out of if you're caught in it.
Up smash Venoct's Upper Octo Snake Venoct appears and has the dragon heads on his scarf chomp the air above Jibanyan. It hits 2 times, one for each dragon head.
Down smash Venoct's Lower Octo Snake Venoct appears and has the dragon heads on his scarf chomp near the ground on the left and right sides of Jibanyan.

Neutral special Default Komasan's Blaze Komasan appears and shoots a ball of blue fire that quickly falls to the ground in an arc, bursting on impact. Both the ball and the burst have a fire effect.
Custom 1 Walkappa's Rapids Walkappa appears and makes a tall splash of water rise from the ground in front of him. It does less damage than Komasan's Blaze and doesn't start as a projectile, but it hits multiple times. It also has a water effect.
Custom 2 Blizzaria's Blizzard Blizzaria appears and makes a small glacier pop out of the ground in front of her, impaling any opponent directly on top of it when it rises. It has an ice effect and a small chance of freezing opponents.
Side special Default Robonyan's Rocket Punch Robonyan appears and fires a jet-powered fist forward through the air. It has long range and does a good amount of damage, but it will eventually fall to the ground if it doesn't hit anything.
Custom 1 Dimmy's Whirlwind Dimmy appears and casts a whirlwind that moves forward. It does little damage and doesn't make opponents flinch, but it goes right through opponents and hits multiple times.
Custom 2 Bloominoko's Meteor Bloominoko appears and shoots a meteor forward through the air. It travels in an arc, so it's harder to aim than Robonyan's Rocket Punch, but it does much more damage.
Up special Default Buhu's Blast Buhu appears and carries Jibanyan into the air. Buhu herself doesn't do any damage, but the trail she leave behind has an area of effect that slows down any opponent that's caught in it. The angle of flight can be controlled by tilting in any direction right after starting the move.
Custom 1 Cheeksqueek's Stinky Smog Cheeksqueek appears, with Jibanyan quickly hopping onto him, and propels both of them through the air via a big fart. This is similar to the Wario Waft in concept, but it doesn't need to be charged overtime. Its angle can be controlled like Buhu's Blast, but it's quicker and doesn't go as far. The fart also leaves an area of effect trail, except it briefly paralyzes any opponent caught in it, due to the foul stench.
Custom 2 Hidabat's Harmony Hidabat appears and carries Jibanyan into the air. Its area of effect trail briefly puts opponents to sleep. Like the previous two moves, its angle can be controlled, except it's a little slower than the others.
Down special Default Coughkoff's Spiky Guard Coughkoff appears in front of Jibanyan and shields him from attacks. Opponents are damaged simply by touching him, but they're damaged even more if he appears right before they attack. This move can be held for about five seconds and does less damage the longer it's held.
Custom 1 Komajiro's Lightning Komajiro appears in front of Jibanyan and summons lightning bolts that acts as a shield. It's like Coughkoff's Spiky Guard, in that it's damaging to the touch and causes the most damage at the start, but it causes more damage, causes brief paralysis, and can't be held as long. It also has more range, so it can be used as a regular attack and not just a shield.
Custom 2 Baku's Drain Baku appears in front of Jibanyan with her mouth wide open. If an opponent attacks her or a projectile enters her mouth, she chomps down and sucks out energy that she uses to heal Jibanyan by a small amount. It deals a good amount of damage to opponents that attack her directly and deals the most damage at the start of the move. It can be held for about five seconds, but right after Baku bites, she disappears.
Final Smash Terror Time Leadoni and Suspicioni grab any opponent(s) in front of Jibanyan and teleport them into the Terror Time dimension. A giant silhouette with glowing eyes appears in the fog behind them. The fog clears and it's revealed to be Gargaros, who lets out a mighty roar. He then lifts his club high into the air and strikes the opponent(s) with it, dealing massive damage and knockback. The entire sequence in Terror Time is cinematic, much like the Final Smashes of Captain Falcon and Shulk.

Taunts[edit]

  • Up taunt: Jibanyan does a dance, similar to the one he does when he is summoned in the anime, and sings "I am a cat and I like it like that!"
  • Side taunt: Jibanyan quickly throws multiple jabs in the air and yells "Eye of the Tiger!"
  • Down taunt: Jibanyan takes out a Chocobar from his belt and gobbles it whole, quickly wiping the chocolate off his mouth afterwards.

Idle poses[edit]

  • Jibanyan stretches and yawns, similar to the beginning of his Paws of Fury attack in Yo-kai Watch.
  • Jibanyan rests his eyes for a few seconds, with his pose being similar to when he loafs in Yo-kai-Watch.

Crowd cheer[edit]

Jiban-yan! Yo - Kai! Jiban-yan! Yo - Kai!

On-screen appearance[edit]

Nate aims his glowing Yo-kai Watch at the battlefield an shouts "Come on out, my friend!" Jibanyan then appears from a swirling portal, striking a quick pose before facing his opponent(s).

Victory Fanfare[edit]

A short remix of the "Quest Complete" theme from the first Yo-kai Watch game.

Victory poses[edit]

  • Jibanyan and Nate high-five each other, while Whisper flies around them and says, "I didn't even break a sweat!"
  • Jibanyan and Nate raise their fists to the sky with pride as Nate says, "Not so average now, am I?" Whisper dances behind them.
  • Jibanyan is laying on his side with his eyes closed as he says with a yawn, "Can I get some sleep nyow?" Nate and Whisper stand over him, shaking their heads in embarrassment.

Trophies[edit]

Jibanyan & Yo-kai
Jibanyan is a Yo-kai who's best friends with Nate, an average boy who wears the Yo-kai Watch and has a Yo-kai butler named Whisper. While he and other Yo-kai can't normally be seen by humans without the Yo-kai Watch, Jibanyan has agreed to make himself visible to make things fair for other fighters. Other Yo-kai will also become visible, but only when Nate calls them out with his watch to aid Jibanyan with a special attack.
3DS: Yo-kai Watch (11/2015)
Jibanyan & Yo-kai (Alt.)
It may look like Jibanyan does all the fighting at first, but when he uses his special moves, other Yo-kai become visible and aid him! All of his custom moves use different Yo-kai, so mix and match them to your liking! Some Yo-kai use offensive moves, like Komasan and his Blaze attack. Other like to be defensive, such as Coughkoff with his Spiky Guard. Then there are ones that use... weird moves, like Cheeksqueek and his Stinky Smog.
3DS: Yo-kai Watch (11/2015)
Terror Time
When children don't behave or follow the rules, they risk being pulled into the scary dimension known as Terror Time, where the mighty Gargaros and his Oni minions are ready to chase them down and punish them with his huge club. For Jibanyan & Yo-kai's Final Smash, they weaponize this dimension by having any fighters in front of Jibanyan get dragged into it by Oni Yo-kai. Once they're there, Gargaros lifts his club and... WHAM!

Alternate Costumes[edit]

While half of Jibanyan & Yo-kai's costumes are simple recolors, the other half replaces Nate with Katie, the female playable character in the first two Yo-kai Watch games. She has her own voice clips, but she has roughly the same lines as Nate.

  • Red - Default
  • Blue - Nate's color scheme is based on Bear, while Jibanyan's is based on Baddinyan
  • Green - Nate's color scheme is based on Eddie, while Jibanyan's is based on Thornyan
  • Purple - Nate's color scheme is based on Nathaniel Adams, while Jibanyan's is based on Fuyunyan
  • White - Katie's default costume. Jibanyan remains the same.
  • Light blue - Katie's color scheme is based on Amy, while Jibanyan's is based on Shogunyan
  • Yellow - Katie's color scheme is based on Inaho, while Jibanyan's is based on USApyon
  • Pink - Katie's color scheme is based on the members of Next HarMEOWny, while Jibanyan's is based on Sailornyan

Trivia[edit]

  • Jibanyan & Yo-kai was originally known as Nate & Yo-kai (as well as Katie & Yo-kai for the latter half of their costumes), but it was changed due to Jibanyan being a more familiar name than his human friends'.
  • Like in the Yo-kai Watch series, six Yo-kai can be used in a single match. This includes Jibanyan, Venoct, and the four Yo-kai used in the special moves. Leadoni and Suspicioni do not count because they are summoned with the Smash Ball, rather than Nate's Yo-kai Watch.
