Luminosity Makes BIG Moves 2024 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate supermajor held in New York, New York, from January 5th-7th, 2024.
Tournament summary[edit]
Alongside Umebura SP 10, this was the first tournament and supermajor of the 2024 season. At 891 attendees, it is the largest Ultimate tournament in the Tristate area, surpassing Let's Make Big Moves 2023 from the previous year.
The biggest upsets of the tournament were on #4 seed Dabuz, who first lost to #132 seed Spritzy in a nailbiter game 5 set (UF 11) before losing to #100 seed Justice 3-1 (UF 10) to place 49th, tying Super Smash Con 2019 as his worst performance at a tournament. Other notable upsets include #28 seed WebbJP upsetting #5 seed Light 3-2 (UF 7, as well as WebbJP's second win over Light), #76 seed MFA upsetting #12 seed Peabnut 3-2 (UF 6), #72 seed Regalo eliminating #17 seed Jakal 3-2 for 65th (UF 4), #113 Wildz upsetting seed #16 Quidd 3-0 (UF 6), and both #233 seed yosi and #145 seed BlitzLuigy upsetting #24 seed Aaron 3-0 for 97th (UF 7 and 6, respectively).
Despite the number of upsets, all but two of the top 8 seeds made it into top 8, those two being Dabuz and #6 Riddles, who was notably eliminated by Maister 3-1, the first time Maister ever defeated Riddles. In addition, MkLeo defeated Sparg0 in Winners Quarter-Final, his first win over Sparg0 since Crown the Third as well as his first top 5 win since he defeated Sonix at Wavedash 2023.
The top 4 was notably made up of the same four players who placed top 4 at the previous Let's Make Big Moves event: Tweek, Sonix, Sparg0, and MkLeo. Tweek defeated Sonix 3-1 to move on to Grand Finals, while Sparg0 won the runback against MkLeo 3-2. Loser's Finals saw Sparg0 go up 2-0 against Sonix, notably using Corrin for the second game. However, Sonix ultimately completed the reverse 3-0 to make Grand Finals on Loser's side, where he lost the runback to Tweek 3-0, with the last game notably seeing Sonix SD on last stocks while at a percent advantage. This not only marked Tweek's first major win since the previous Let's Make Big Moves event, but also marked the first major since Tera that had at least one of the Four Horsemen in attendance that was won by a non-Horseman.
Steve ban[edit]
In response to questions regarding Steve's legality at the tournament, head TO Max Ketchum posted a poll on Twitter asking players whether Steve should be banned at the tournament.[1] The poll closed a week later with 3,738 responses.
The results showed a majority of players who were attending or planned on attending the event wanted Steve ban (69.47% and 62.83%, respectively), while the percent for those not attending was smaller yet still a majority (52.47%). Due to the results, Steve was banned from the event.[2]
The poll saw a rather split reaction. Some players lauded how the ban was based on a community vote rather than solely the decision of the tournament organizers, which also gave clearer picture on the general playerbase's opinions on the ban, specifically how most players who attend tournaments want the character banned.[3] Other players believed the ban was more so due to Steve's unpopularity in the community and/or the Tristate area, with them also arguing that other unpopular characters such as Kazuya and Sonic would likely see the same result if polled.[4]
