FireFox Tournament I was a Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament held in Verneuil-sur-Seine, a city in France near Paris, on February 19th, 2005. With 73 entrants, it was the largest Melee tournament held in France at the time, and it would only be surpassed by its sequel in late 2005.
Format[edit]
The tournament began with a Swiss Rounds phase, with sets being best of 3, played with 3 stocks and a 5-minute timer. Top 32 advanced to the double-elimination bracket, keeping best of 3 sets but with 4 stocks and an 8-minute timer instead. Winners Finals, Losers Finals and Grand Finals were best of 5. Stalling was banned and items were turned off.
The ruling in the event of a time out changed depending on the phase:
- Swiss Rounds: the player with the lowest % wins the game. If the players' % are the same, Sudden Death is played out as the tie-breaker.
- Bracket: the player with the lowest % wins the game, unless the difference in % between the two players is lower than 30. In this case, a 1-stock game is played out as a tie-breaker, on the same stage and with the same characters.
Stagelist[edit]
The starter stage, and all stages played during the Swiss Rounds phase, were selected at random between the following stages: Final Destination, Battlefield, Dream Land N64, Pokémon Stadium, Fountain of Dreams.
During the Bracket phase, the following stages were illegal: Icicle Mountain, Flat Zone, Temple, Yoshi's Island N64, Fourside, Venom, Mushroom Kingdom, Mushroom Kingdom II, Brinstar Depths, Great Bay. If either player picked a different character during the set, the stage would be selected at random between the starter stages. This clause could be bypassed for one game during best of 5 sets.
Dave's Stupid Rule was not applied during the counterpicking process. In addition, each player could ban one stage from the entire stage list before starting the set. That stage would remain banned for the remainder of the set.
