At APEX there was a list of tournament-viable stages herehere at page 15. Should we add those in? Or what does it take to decide a list? --Meester Tweester (talk) 09:22, 7 February 2015 (EST)

:Like in Brawl, the stagelist varies wildly from tournament to tournament; the Apex stagelist isn't reflective of a community consensus stagelist, and thus what we write here shouldn't be based around it. <span style="font-family:Edwardian Script ITC; font-size:12pt"><span style="color:forestgreen">Omega</span> <span style="color:forestgreen">Tyrant</span></span> 11:02, 7 February 2015 (EST)

Proposal to rename article to "Stage legality"
i.e. it should be expanded to list all the stages for each game, then state whether each stage is a Starter, Counterpick, or Banned plus the reason why (generally for the latter two).
Reasons include that we're pretty much already doing this for all of Smash 4, as well as Brawl to an extent, and that the list of banned stages is usually so large that simply adding the list of starters and counterpicks barely requires any effort while significantly expanding the scope of the article.
Any thoughts? Zowayix (talk) 20:05, 26 December 2015 (EST)

::::What about simply adding a column next to "Status" with the stage hazards toggle icon, and in that column, for the stages that aren't banned, you put a green/red/yellow smash icon to precise if stage hazards are allowed, forbidden, or irrelevant (exemple : BF => yellow/irrelevant, Dream Land => green/allowed, Midgar => red/forbidden) ? 81.254.247.115 11:48, 21 December 2018 (EST)
Hi, i new here and I have the same problem, stages like green greens, Wario ware, and Unova Pokemon league all have distruptive hazards but can simpily be turned off, stages like midgar can just have the varies symbol instead of being banned just like the miiverse stage did in smash 4. And Fountain of Dreams can just be banned in doubles, just like the stage did in Melee.--Frezzysnezzly (talk) 14:22, 17 December 2018 (EST)
:What's banned and what's legal is decided by tournament directors. And since no big tournament (Don't Park on the Grass, Smashadelphia Ultimate or Lauch for example) has had stages Fountain of Dreams legal, they are not legal. Some stages like Wario Ware were legal in some rulesets so they can be set to "varies" or "banned/legal" Patzui (talk) 05:19, 19 December 2018 (EST)
OK, I know i'm not the one who decides all of this tournament stuff but just saying, some of these stages could potentially be legal in the future to keep that in mind but for now, most of these stages are undecided or banned.--Frezzysnezzly (talk) 21:52, 19 December 2018 (EST)
Similar stages
As I completed the SSBU stage list, I just replicated what was done previously by others, but another user later made a change.
When several stages are similar (BF and all its clones, FD and Wily Castle and PictoChat 2, Pokémon Stadium 1 and 2), should we just choose to tag one as allowed and ban the other ? Or should we just tag all of them the same, not deciding which one should be the allowed one ? It's kind of weird to just pick one to make it the allowed one. 81.254.247.115 11:48, 21 December 2018 (EST)
: I tried to do something about it by using the idea of "Alternative starter" for all the similar stages. If this solution is good enough for anyone, this point can be removed from the discussion page. 81.254.247.115 11:48, 21 December 2018 (EST)
::Only the one that is allowed in tournament rulesets is allowed in tournament rulesets. Stages that are not allowed in tournament rulesets are banned. Nothing weird about that. The reason for tournament directors for banning "similar stages" is that you can't counterpick a stage that is more or less the same as a stage you already counterpicked. Also keep in mind that "This is a talk page. Remember to sign your posts with four tildes (~) and follow the talk page policy." Patzui (talk) 11:01, 21 December 2018 (EST)
:::Won't that vary from one tournament from another ? The point of the page is to have kind of a common ground, otherwise, it will end up being a page with a different list for each event, won't it ? Anyway, I'm nowhere near being a competitive player, I was just using the page to make a ruleset for my 1v1 serious matches, and ended up completing it with the what seemed to be the most obvious to me. Now people who know better can finish the job by making small editions (I have no idea what the 4 tildes will do, but I will try right away) 81.254.247.115 11:39, 21 December 2018 (EST)
:::I have thought about it a bit since and I think there is a problem here : first, you told me that it's tournament ruleset and that's it, but if so, why some stage have a double status while only one tournament is referenced so far ? WarioWare is Banned/Starter, but the only tournament referenced is Smashadelphia, where WarioWare was a Starter, so where does the Banned part come from ? Also, due to the Stage Hazards Toggle, I think the page will end up having a problem : to keep the list short, tournament list will keep some viable stage out, and sooner or later, the list will probably end up mostly with stage that are either "varies" or "banned", and at this point, it will make the whole list useless (what's the informative value of "varies" ?). Shouldn't the people who work on this wiki start to think about a rule like "If the stage is a starter in at least X % of tournaments, then it's a starter, otherwise if it's a conterpick in at least Y % of the tournaments, then it's a counterpick, overwise it's banned" (and if two similar stages end up being both legal because of such a rule, you can still add a footnote "Those two stage a commonly considered legal but are never both allowed in the same tournament for they are too similar"). Just some input from a random user 81.254.247.115 05:12, 25 December 2018 (EST)
::::If you look at the recent big tournaments, it looks like the 5 starter and 3 counterpick stages will probably become the standard. Patzui (talk) 11:48, 28 December 2018 (EST)
:::::OK, I'll let people that are more educated than me on the matter handle it. You'll still have my proposition about how to deal with it if you ever need to. By the way, just another idea, you could also separate "banned" in 2 status if tournaments end up not using the same standard : something like "avoided" (mostly banned but not always) and "banned" (never ever legal in any tournament ever). 81.254.247.115 08:48, 3 January 2019 (EST)
::::::Is there a reason why similar stages are banned and if so, can we have that explanation on the main page? Is it so they don't get double up in random selections? Guybrush20X6 (talk) 09:52, 5 January 2019 (EST)
Banned Battlefield/Omega Forms
While all BF/FD versions of stages are the same on a functional level, there will be a few that get banned for visual and readability problems. Fountain of Dreams has reflections on all forms so that's gonna cause framerate issues, especially in doubles and Ice Climbers matches. Should we have a list of stages banned in all forms too? Guybrush20X6 (talk) 19:56, 21 December 2018 (EST)

"Banned/Starter/Counterpick"
I noticed that two stages in Ultimate have something along the lines of "Banned/Counterpick/Starter" as their legality status. (Specifically, WarioWare, Inc. and Lylat Cruise.) Shouldn't the legality status be "Varies" or do I not know how tournament picks work? CardboardLuigi (talk) 15:07, 11 January 2019 (EST)
:Maybe "Varies" that's used for Battlefield Forms and Ω forms is the wrong word and should be changed to "Alternative" or something like that. And for these two stages, if there are no tournaments where they where Counterpicks, "/Counterpick" should be removed otherwise they should get linked. Patzui (talk) 15:28, 11 January 2019 (EST)
No Hazards' own Stage Legality
I was thinking if no hazard may need it's own legally slot so that it's easy to tell which one is required hazard off to be legal and add a reason of why it's legal or not if hazards turn off. Trimint123 (talk) 13:04, 10 January 2019 (WIB)
Temporary semi-protection
This page might need temporary semi-protection. Too many bad edits of people who don't understand what "stage legality" means..
