Talk:Punishment

This article sounds somewhat awkward written in passive voice, since it's supposed to be about punishing instead of being/not being punished.--Dinodomain (talk) 01:49, 14 November 2016 (EST)

It's supposed to be about both. How punishing works and how to deal with it. Serpent SKSig.png King 01:51, 14 November 2016 (EST)

Move to Punish[edit]

I raised this already in Discord, but I would like to move this article title to Punish as it is much more commonly used in the Smash community, while "Punishment" in that form is never used. "Punish" is also used as a noun in the Smash community (ex: "The Ice Climbers have the best punish in Brawl") regardless of how grammatically correct or incorrect it may be. Fighting game communities in general have never cared about grammar anyway, lol. I support this move. Aidan the Spooky Gamer 16:22, October 26, 2023 (EDT)

Support: In addition to "punish" being the most common formatting of the word, I'll reiterate what I said on Discord that renaming it as punish will make it more consistent with how we title other articles. For my signature. Ultimate Toad, the Toad Warrior. (I'm the best!) 16:25, October 26, 2023 (EDT)

Support per above. Feels like unnecessary formalisation of a common community term. -PlagueSigImage.pngPlague von KarmaPlagueSigImage.png 05:47, October 31, 2023 (EDT)

It turns out that this would technically violate SW:MOS and is actually listed as an example, reason being that punish is a verb versus a noun. However, as an English teacher and linguist, I'll clarify that words can occupy and be used in different word classes depending on context. For example, "run" can be used to refer to the sport (noun), or the act of running (verb). In the case of "punish", Smashers often use "punish" in a noun form, eg. "I didn't get the punish, nooo!", thus why this move proposal exists at all. Just thought this would be worth noting in the event that the policy is rewritten with a better example. - PlagueSigImage.pngPlague von KarmaPlagueSigImage.png

I support this too. I don't think I've ever heard someone call it a "punishment". Regarding Plague's mention of "punish" being a verb, as they pointed out already, in the Smash community, it is used both as a noun and a verb, and the wiki consistency uses terms used by the Smash community as they are used by the community, even if they are not standard English (e.g edgeguard).Alex the Weeb 18:39, January 27, 2025 (EST)
