Talk:On-screen appearance
Old stuff[edit]
Are you freaking serious, Galvanic? You actually created a page about the character intro sequences of SSB seconds before DOJO revealed it to return in Brawl!? That's amazing!!! =D
That is, if that was the truth... Erik, Lord of Universes 03:10, November 2, 2007 (EDT)
It was also seen on the demo for "E for All" -Enigma14
It's true. I was going to make it a while ago but I just couldn't think up a name for the article.--Galvanic 02:01, November 3, 2007 (EDT)
Dedede[edit]
OK, guys, where was Dedede's On-Screen appearance confirmed? I know about that screenshot, don't worry about that, but have we gotten any official proof of that being his On-Screen appearance? - Pokemon DP
Technically, no, that screenshot is all we got. I am not for speculation, but it is pretty convincing to me.--Oxico 07:44, December 17, 2007 (EST)
For Real[edit]
We do not know PT's On-Screen Appearance. For all we know, the running-taunt thing was just that: A taunt.--Oxico 11:28, January 13, 2008 (EST)
- Agree with you on that (Thought maybe PT cant taunt at all and his fighters have to do it for him).--Fandangox 11:32, January 13, 2008 (EST)
Mr. Game and Wacth[edit]
Ok I have seen his entrance, but I'm not really good at english and its difficult to me to use the correct terms to exlain it, his entrance can be seen here.--Fandangox 17:17, February 2, 2008 (EST) , June 30, 2020
Location[edit]
Can someone make sure that each one of the appearances are on each character page? Gracias.--Oxico 19:29, February 2, 2008 (EST)
Category?[edit]
i hardly think this fits under the "Technique" category. can someone think of a better-fitting one and change it? FyreNWater - (Talk • Contributions ) 23:42, February 8, 2008 (EST)
- Moved it to C:Characters. --Sky (t | c | w) 23:49, February 8, 2008 (EST)
- Are you doubting Sakurai's categorization methods? ^_~ --Phred 01:46, February 9, 2008 (EST)
Tables[edit]
Your welcome guys. It certainly looks better! Cheezperson {talk}stuff 16:55, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Gallery?[edit]
Should we include a gallery of all the on-screen appearances? I think that might be a good thing to try. Besides, we could get a whole bunch of 'em off the DOJO. Miles (talk - contribs) 03:27, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
- As long as they're big enough to be seen, but small enough to keep the tables usable. Or were you thinking about making a gallery-type thing? Cheezperson {talk}stuff 03:38, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
- I do mean using <gallery> tags. Miles (talk - contribs) 03:40, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, I have a blind spot every place it said "gallery." Yeah, that would be convenient, but it may make the article a bit lengthy. I support, as long as you deal with the length issue. Cheezperson {talk}stuff 03:47, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Proper noun?[edit]
I thought this was one. Check the DOJO. Miles (talk) 18:59, 21 October 2010 (EDT)
- It's arguable, I think the only time the term "On-Screen Appearance" was used was in the title of the post it was described in (and would therefore be title case regardless of properness). Toomai Glittershine 19:01, 21 October 2010 (EDT)
GIFs?[edit]
Should it be a good idea to have gifs for brawl appearances? I mean, I take their on-screen appearances, save it as a gif, then import it here (or on another page)? Airconny (talk) 20:10, 28 February 2013 (EST)
- You talking about the animated ones? Cause I think that would be fine. Except since there are a few photos and not animated GIFs the photos might be unnecessary. BRAWLS OF FURY 20:30, 28 February 2013 (EST)
- Yeah the animated ones. So we can see how they enter more visually and stuff. Wait, you mean the screenshots on the page are unnecessary or do you mean the gifs? Airconny (talk) 20:33, 28 February 2013 (EST)
- The screenshots onthe page would be unnecessary since GIFs show more. BRAWLS OF FURY 20:37, 28 February 2013 (EST)
- Yeah the animated ones. So we can see how they enter more visually and stuff. Wait, you mean the screenshots on the page are unnecessary or do you mean the gifs? Airconny (talk) 20:33, 28 February 2013 (EST)
About the GIFs[edit]
Don't know if this is the best place for this, but I was curious as to how you were able to obtain the gifs for the on-screen appearances in Brawl, with just the one character and no computer players. That's pretty much it. 73MPL4R (talk) 19:59, 15 April 2014 (EDT)
- Chances are hacks were used. Toomai Glittershine The Emissary 20:39, 15 April 2014 (EDT)
Anyone know why Melee removed these. and if so, could you please add it to the article?[edit]
Just wondering. 31.50.6.246 04:24, 3 September 2014 (EDT)
- That's the thing, no one really know why. Aidan the Intermediate Gamer (talk) 22:28, 20 September 2014 (EDT)
What does Little Mac do when he's selected with the sweatshirt costume?[edit]
His on-screen appearance involves him stripping it and throwing it into the air, but what does he do when it's his actual costume? Blue Ninjakoopa 19:29, 20 September 2014 (EDT)
- If I'm going to be completely honest...I would like to know this myself. Aidan the Intermediate Gamer (talk) 22:28, 20 September 2014 (EDT)
- I don't think they're going to change it, they didn't change Alph's intro to feature the Drake. It might actually be funny to see him strip off the hoodie and have another hoodie underneath... :P ...a new Nuttais approaching... 22:30, 20 September 2014 (EDT)
- I own the Japanese game myself, and it seems that Little Mac uses the same exact animation regardless of the costume. The only difference with the sweatshirt costume seems to be simply: he does not take the sweatshirt off. - EndGenuity (talk) 22:54, 20 September 2014 (EDT)
Shouldn't Little Mac's gif include the costume that wears it for the battle?[edit]
Mostly because it's different from the other palettes. Unowninator (talk) 18:37, 6 March 2016 (EST)
I don't get what you're saying, if you're suggesting that Little Mac's should have him be wearing the pink sweatshirt costume, no, because that's redundant as he performs the same animation except he doesn't throw off his sweatshirt. MuteSpittah (talk) 18:41, 6 March 2016 (EST)
It's not exactly redundant if it's different. Unowninator (talk) 18:42, 6 March 2016 (EST)
It's the exact same animation minus the sweatshirt being thrown off. There's no need for it. MuteSpittah (talk) 18:47, 6 March 2016 (EST)
Making a chart for the Ultimate demo characters[edit]
I was wondering; why don't we make the chart for the characters in the Ultimate demo and the ones that were not, but had them shown? I just wanted to ask before I did anything. Speed48 22:20, 15 September 2018 (EDT)
GIF or WebM[edit]
After working on the gifs for Ultimate I noticed that the wiki supports webm. After playing with some ffmpeg settings I was able to get a webm that is 60 fps instead of 15 fps and with a filesize of 839 KB instead of 3.92 MB, an 80% reduction with 4 times the frame rate (Mii Gunner example compared to File:GunnerOnScreenAppearanceSSBU.gif, imgur turns it into an mp4 but it doesn't change much). Would this be something to consider doing? With 82 gifs for Ultimate at about 4 MB each, that is over 300 MB to load. The only complication I can think of (other than effort) would be compatibility issues with older browsers. --CanvasK (talk) 12:54, May 27, 2020 (EDT)
- On my user page I've uploaded a WebM version of Mii Gunner's appearance to compare it to the GIF version. Unfortunately the wiki doesn't support VP9 and I've had to use VP8, the latter having wider browser support but doesn't encode as efficiently, leading to a slightly larger size than stated above. I've listed some pros and cons of the format as well but I will let others judge if it is worth it. --CanvasK (talk) 21:32, July 12, 2020 (EDT)
Creation of subpages[edit]
This comes from a reason similar to the above point of discussion. Personally, I disagree with it, having a preference for the current gifs higher amounts of frames and quality than if converted. But I do agree that the page is unnecesarily too heavy. Ultimate alone has 83 gifs, and for Wii U still has 58 gifs, Brawl has 39 and 64 has 12. It takes too long to load for anyone that comes by, and looks more disorganized than it should. That's why I suggest we split the page into categories per game, just like the taunts, idle poses and victory poses page do.
Only consequence from this would be that Melee would be the only game left without a page, but considering all the characters have the same entrance in that game, I consider it not big of a loss it just be given its own section in the article, unless someone was willing to record all the characters entrances from there. DigitalHazard (talk) 01:50, June 30, 2020 (CST)
- I'll support splitting by game. I'm having a little trouble understanding your disagreement with the above discussion. Do you mind expanding on it a bit? --CanvasK (talk) 16:43, July 1, 2020 (EDT)
- Looking back at it, I admit it was some confusion and misinterpretation from my part due to the example you provided being a mp4 via imgur, which tends to compress gifs into lower quality videos. DigitalHazard (talk) 11:58, July 4, 2020 (CST)
- Support for consistency with the rest of the wiki, though I also wouldn't mind if the page instead received sections for each character akin to the alternate costume pages. IDK how the wiki handles image loading in folded sections, but it may help the problem w/o requiring a split. b2jammer (talk) 20:22, July 4, 2020 (EDT)
- I support a split per game, and also support switching to webms if possible; in my mind, the ideal method would be to re-record each one with webm rather than convert the existing gifs, which might take a while but would result in higher quality. The two combined would probably save a lot of space. ~ Serena Strawberry (talk) 20:29, July 4, 2020 (EDT)
