Talk:Background character
Should the U.F.O. be a background character. I thought it was a stage element. 72.35.99.204 04:25, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
What´s about Castle Siege? The black knight can be seen in the background --Zidane-Tribal (talk) 21:09, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Doesn't Kraid count as a hazard, since he spins the stage? ...a new Nuttais approaching... 18:04, 26 July 2014 (EDT)
I think he's considered a background character because he doesn't affect the characters themselves. Sure, he spins the stage, but if his model was removed from the stage in who-knows-what way, the stage would still spin, right?Tepig (talk) 18:08, 26 July 2014 (EDT)
- He's a stage hazard. Spinning the stage will affect what the characters are standing on, therefore affect the characters.Qwerty 18:18, 26 July 2014 (EDT)
Clarification[edit]
There appears to be some inconsistency with who/what is marked as a background character. All the characters for Codec Conversations are labeled as background characters and so is Slippy but not the rest of Team Star Fox or Team Star Wolf; also none of them are ever in the background, they are technically in the foreground and aren't reoccurring like other background characters. Arwing and Great Fox are marked as background "characters" but not Bill Blaster. Palutena is a background character because of Palutena's Army, but not Sothis, Dunban, Fiora, Riki, Gunship, Paula, Poo, Boney, Kumatora (there's a lot of FS helpers), etc. Fly Guys and Supporting Ghost are counted despite being fully interactable on the stage.
Essentially, which of these that are "background characters" shouldn't be and which of these that aren't should be. Looking through edit histories, some of these were marked ages ago, so it seems that the standard has changed but hasn't made its way to some pages. --CanvasK (talk) 20:44, May 23, 2022 (EDT)
- My personal interpretation of a background character is a character who actually appears in the background of a stage. Fly Guy and Blarggwich should be taken out because this artical specifically states characters who have gameplay effects are not counted. I'd consider Final Smash characters a gray area, but personally the codecs and slippy shouldn't be counted because they aren't actually in the background.
- Also I'd count the Magicant characters that appear in the rift as background characters (they currently aren't listed), and removing Porky because it's not his helicopter (it's Monotoli's), plus there's no evidence he's driving it since you can't physically see who's inside. Omega Toad, the Toad Warrior. (I'm the best!) 07:30, May 24, 2022 (EDT)
- I think Final Smash characters would be better labeled as "assist role", which a good chunk of the ones I listed already are. For Smash Taunt characters, changing their heading on their page from "As a background character" to "Smash Taunt role" would be more apt. I think they should also get their own category ("Smash Taunt characters") as they hold more importance than background characters and are eligible for articles unlike background characters.
- Including Magicant characters sounds fair. Should the helicopter be removed outright? Arwing and Great Fox are labeled as "background characters" and are piloted vehicles like the helicopter. Seeing as the Highwind in Northern Cave and the airship on Mario Galaxy aren't labeled, maybe all of these shouldn't be counted as background characters, in part because they aren't characters. --CanvasK (talk) 18:33, May 24, 2022 (EDT)
