The Skill parameter has been removed from Smasher infoboxes, and in its place are the new "Best historical ranking" and "Best tournament result" parameters. SmashWiki needs help adding these new parameters to Smasher infoboxes, refer to the guidelines here for what should be included in these new parameters. |
When adding results to Smasher pages, include each tournament's entrant number in addition to the player's placement, and use the {{Trn}} template with the matching game specified. Please also fix old results on Smasher pages that do not abide to this standard. Refer to our Smasher article guidelines to see how results tables should be formatted. |

The Back Shield (バックシールド, Bakkushīrudo) is a unique item introduced in Super Smash Bros. 4. As the name would suggest, the item protects the fighter's rear from harm. The shield lasts for 30 seconds, with time reduced based on how much damage it has taken (5 Home-Run Bat swings at 30% damage reduces it by about 5 seconds, for example). It stays the same size for all characters and is positioned just below their center if they are taller, so is less protective for taller characters, while providing practically full rear protection for smaller characters.
In-game description from Super Smash Bros. for 3DS
This shield protects your back from various attacks. However, it'll break if it takes too much damage.
Origin
The Back Shield originated as an item in Kid Icarus: Uprising. It was used to protect Pit from enemy attacks from behind and it rotated with Pit to always be behind him. In Super Smash Bros. 4, this is true; however, not much is known as to how much it protects the player.
