Forum:A policy regarding datamined content
With Super Smash Bros. Ultimate currently being heavily datamined, one thing that has been bugging me recently is that the current notice about the avoidance of posting certain datamined content doesn't seem to be a proper policy in the wiki. Making it into a policy would benefit us in that it would be much easier to deal with a sudden influx of such content before the notice is given too late, and this would eventually repeat for each future installment that happened to be datamined.
Thus, I propose a policy regarding datamined content, detailing what should and should not be contained in the wiki from it — a simple bullet list should be enough — so that a clear set of rules can be made in preparation for future datamined games. Should this be considered too minor to be its own policy, it could be merged onto a larger one, but I cannot think of any that are good candidates for this.
That is basically my reasoning for this policy to be made. Feedback is obviously welcome. — Nokii (T·C·L) 20:36, 25 November 2018 (EST)
- The new notice actually caught me off guard since I had gotten used to the old blue one. I'm neutral on this, but if this policy does get added maybe it would fit on the new game procedure. Everone123 (profile • talk • contribs) 21:10, 25 November 2018 (EST)
- Honestly surprised this kind of thing wasn't added before. However, I feel like all it's saying is "do not add the list of music". I do not remember what context "texture" is in, but what exactly is the notice suppose to do if it is not preventing any non-officially released marital prior to the intended release date of the game being added to the wiki? Plus, some information has been already been added prior to the notice being put out. I understand certain things like information from "cut-scenes" probably shouldn't be added yet, but I feel the notice is not specific enough of what shouldn't be added yet. Perhaps this notice was put out too late and may better suit for a possible sequel? Wolff (talk) 21:33, 25 November 2018 (EST)
- I have to agree it's a bit too late for this; people aren't going to be uploading textures or music files, and basically all of the text-based information has already been added, including the list of music. It'd be worth adding to the new game procedure if another Smash game comes out, or if the future DLC gets datamined, but we'd have to work things out to be more specific. - To be completely honest, this probably should have been put in place before - now is not the time, however. We're less than two weeks before Ultimate comes out (HYPE TRAIN GOING STRONG), and we don't know when the next game will be. Aidan, the Festive Rurouni 21:47, 25 November 2018 (EST)

The main reason we didn't have a policy prepared in advance was that we didn't expect things to progress this quickly - I personally thought it would take a week or two from "game is leaked" to "we can read the game files", not a few hours.
I'll edit SW:NEWGAME to add the sitenotice's intent. Toomai Glittershine The Ghostbuster 21:52, 25 November 2018 (EST)
