Apex 2016 is the upcoming seventh edition of the Apex series, scheduled to take place on June 17th-19th, 2016.[1] This is the first Apex event under the new management of the Bifuteki crew, following Alex Strife's removal from the team in 2015.
Presumably due to controversies surrounding the tournament series starting with Apex 2015, Apex 2016 featured a precipitous fall in attendence compared to its predecessor, which had featured among the largest Smash 64, Melee, Brawl, and Smash 4 tournaments in history. Melee notably went from having 1,037 entrants to having only 147 entrants, Smash 4 fell from 837 entrants to 295, and the Brawl event was completely cancelled. The poor attendence extended to games outside of Smash that were previously hosted at the event, with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Killer Instinct having their tournaments cancelled; furthermore, an intended new game for the tournament, Mortal Kombat X, also had its event cancelled.
