- This page is about Ryu's up special. For attacks nicknamed "Shoryuken", view Shoryuken (disambiguation).
Shoryuken (昇龍拳, Rising Dragon Fist) is Ryu's up special in Super Smash Bros. 4. Ryu attacks using a powerful uppercut of the same name while announcing "SHORYUKEN!!". A successful hit causes a spray of white ink around the opponent. The move has almost no startup, making it incredibly difficult to predict, but has severe ending lag if it misses, making it a high risk move, high reward move. Similar to Ryu's other special moves, the damage dealt and height gained by the move increases if the special button (or attack button, if inputted) is held: the tapped version deals 13% and KOs at 160%, while the held version is a powerful vertical KO option at high percentages, dealing 15% and KOing at 110%. The knockback and damage dealt by the move decreases as time passes, meaning it is most powerful during the first few attack frames. As it gives Ryu a height boost, it is his primary vertical recovery move, especially the held version. Ryu technically becomes helpless only after he travels the same distance downwards as he has jumped. However, due to this move's massive endlag he cannot do anything else once he uses Shoryuken, not even maneuver in the air (until he becomes 'helpless').
Input Shoryuken
“ | Shoryuken – Input forward, down, down-forward for 1.2x attack power. Think you can pull it off? SURE YOU CAN! | ” |
—In-Game Tip |
As with all of Ryu's special moves (excluding his down special), performing the original arcade input of the move (side, down, and diagonally down, in a Z pattern) increases its power to 15% and 18% respectively; the held version is Ryu's strongest move, KOing at as early as 88%. Additionally, the move gains invincibility until Ryu falls, and no landing lag is given as a bonus. Unfortunately, this move is quite difficult to perform with inputs compared to Ryu's other specials, as wrongly moving the control stick will either penalize the player with an accidental dash attack, Focus Attack or Input Hadoken; because of its somewhat complicated input, it is common for players to misinput (especially offstage, which can cause accidental SDs) or use it too late as an attack despite its incredible power. The easiest way to perform it is when standing still, running towards the opponent, or after a tapped tilt attack. If the player successfully does an Input Shoryuken, Ryu's fist will flash at the peak of his jump, the attack gains a white ink-like trail, and he announces the attack's name in a fiercer voice.
Customization
Special Move customization was added in Super Smash Bros. 4. These are the known variations:
- Shoryuken: Default
Origin
The Shoryuken is one of the special moves used by Ryu, Ken, and various other characters in the Street Fighter series. It is a rising uppercut, involving the user jumping off the floor with a fist raised and a full body spin. Ryu's Shoryuken hits only once, and knocks the opponent down.
Trivia
- The in-game tip mentioning the Input Shoryuken's difficulty to be performed (seen above) uses slight wordplay: The final three words in the tip, "SURE YOU CAN!", sounds like Shoryuken when spoken quickly. This is also done with the Input Hadoken's in-game tip (with "howtodo" sounding minutely like hadoken).
- Shoryuken was Mentioned in the Super Smash Bros E3 2013 Direct.
