CD Factory
A CD Factory is a custom stage that is designed to assist in the collection of CDs and stickers. While the design of a CD Factory can be changed by the designer, it generally involves the use of conveyor belt running against another to trap the Sandbag and its contents (in Brawl) or the use of Master Balls to spawn many Mew (in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U).
In Brawl
The idea behind a CD Factory involves setting all items to off with the exception of the Sandbag. In doing so, Sandbag becomes the only item that spawns on the stage; hitting the item ordinarily causes it to release further items per its base behaviour, but as all other items are off, Sandbag instead is forced to drop stickers and CDs. The intent of the conveyor belts is to keep Sandbag in place as it is attacked, as well as to potentially corral other Sandbags into the area between the two belts.
In addition to standard one-player variants, CD Factories can take on other forms, including forms intended for two or more players. The use of hacks can also allow players to make the conveyor belts move more quickly.
In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Because Super Smash Bros. for Wii U lacks the conveyor belt parts essential to Brawl CD Factories and CDs were removed from the items spawnable by Sandbags, a conventional CD Factory is not possible. However, the Stage Builder can still be used to farm CDs, trophies, and equipment. The newly-introduced Master Ball item spawns the trophy, custom part, and CD-dropping Mew much more often than normal Poke Balls, making it a useful farming tool. A typical Smash 4 CD Factory contains a single U-shaped platform, and has crates and Master Balls set to a high spawn rate. (Cannons may also be added to lock CPU players in an infinite loop, preventing them from interfering or inadvertently stealing CDs.) The player then simply smashes crates and throws Master Balls until Mew spawns, collects dropped items, and repeats as necessary. This method is less efficient than a Brawl CD Factory, but can still produce results with some patience.
Due to the lack of both CDs and the Stage Builder in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, CD Factories are impossible in that version of the game. However, the same item strategies as above could be applied on a normal stage to farm trophies and custom parts.
