The Back Shield (バックシールド, Back Shield) is a unique item introduced in Super Smash Bros. 4. As the name would suggest, the item protects the fighter's rear from harm. The shield lasts for 30 seconds, with time reduced based on how much damage it has taken (5 Home-Run Bat swings at 30% damage reduces it by about 5 seconds, for example). It stays the same size for all characters and is positioned just below their center if they are taller, so is less protective for taller characters, while providing practically full rear protection for smaller characters.

This shield protects your back from various attacks. However, it'll break if it takes too much damage.

Origin

The Back Shield originated as an item in Kid Icarus: Uprising. It was used to protect Pit from enemy attacks from behind and it rotated with Pit to always be behind him. In Super Smash Bros. 4, this is true; however, not much is known as to how much it protects the player.
