Hello, SmashWiki-ans, and welcome to my user page! I've played all 3 games, as well as some Project M and Brawl-, and I'm hyped for Smash 4! In Smash 64 I main Kirby and second Pikachu, and in Brawl I main Marth and second Wario and Pikachu. My Melee disc broke years ago, but I mained Captain Falcon and seconded Marth. Possible new mains for me in Smash 4 are Lucario, WFT, and Greninja. I'm not professional by any means, but I do consider myself "competitive", and I want to eventually get involved in the tourney scene. I'll almost certainly be open to online challenges once Smash 4 comes out. I'm usually available from 5 to 8 P.M. (EST) on weekdays and 11 A.M. to 10 P.M. on weekends. Other series I love to play include Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, and more.
I've played the whole Smash Bros. series since I was young, with no signs of stopping anytime soon. This contains my thoughts on each one. This also lists how well I tend to perform with characters in each game. Characters not listed mean I believe that their performance is negligible or that I simply don't use them much. This is not scientific or anything as my human competition is extremely limited, so this also has some gut feelings in it.
Super Smash Bros. 4
Smash Bros. 4 Character Anticipation to Play Tiers
I was excited for this game ever since the first E3 trailer, but the Smash Direct got me a one-way ticket on the hype train. I really like how Sakurai is going about rebalancing the game with the whole Namco-Bandai team, so that they spread the love in terms of viability. I plan on picking up both versions, and I might finally try getting into the tourney scene this time. Please note that the tiers are NOT sorted within themselves. Credit to OT for the chart design.
Top Tier
Greninja: A fast, cool, tricky Pokémon that seems to fit my style perfectly. After watching him during E3, I'm putting him back on top.
Lucario: A character I used to mix it up in Brawl with some awesome buffs coming his way. Seriously, that recovery buff is gonna be so amazing.
Marth: A favorite since Melee who doesn't seem to be changing much as per usual. A nice main I can fall back on. I hear he was slowed down a bit, but I hope he's either heavier or has a recovery of something besides a bagel.
Wii Fit Trainer: An agile lady who kicks ass with yoga moves? Hell yes! I played her at the Best Buy demo, and she impressed!
Zero Suit Samus: I wanted to use her in Brawl but I never really got the hang of her. She looks like lots of fun after watching ZeRo play her!
High Tier
Bowser: All these cool changes have me dying to try him. I usually don't play powerhouse characters, but just look at the drop kick! The high jumps!! The ARMOR!!! I hope he has his real voice this time!
Charizard: My favorite of PT's Pokémon, my first Pokémon ever, and one of my favorite Pokémon overall. He's shaping up nicely now that he's not tethered to his trainer. Will Flare Blitz be stupidly strong to make up for recoil?
Kirby: My first main and one of my favorite video game characters. Hopefully Sakurai gives his baby some more speed and oomph he's been lacking lately. Faster air speed is pretty much a must on this guy if his moves aren't 64-powerful.
Pikachu: Another old fave who doesn't seem to be going anywhere on my mains list. I'll miss simple thunderspiking, but Thunder's meteor smash will make him a nightmare offstage.
Robin: Even though I've never played Awakening, I always knew that Robin would be a better rep than Chrom. A magic-and-sword user sounds cool, so hopefully durability won't gimp him.
Villager: After seeing him in action, my opinion has changed. He looks more fun than I thought, and the tree can make for cool edgeguard shenanigans.
Mid Tier
Captain Falcon: Loved the captain in Melee and 64, so I hope the physics don't screw him over again.
Luigi: I love him, but I just couldn't click with the guy. Although the scuttle jump and Poltergust are cool, he really needs a faster projectile, better traction, and/or faster air speed in order to make the jump to high tier.
Mega Man: As hyped as I am for him, I don't think he'll mesh too well with my playstyle. He seems pretty campy to me, since his recovery doesn't look too impressive and he probably isn't heavy.
Olimar: Trying to micromanage little guys that die in an instant? I'm already not too good at Pikmin! However, the way he's been redone is very interesting. I hope that the Pikmin become more durable, as well as get stronger when at flower level.
Palutena: I loved how witty she was in Uprising, and she looks fun. Interesting that her custom moves get special treatment, though.
Pit: Sakurai seems to be making him a bit more aggressive, so I might be able to play him better. That new recovery is pretty painful, though.
Sonic: You better get stronger, Sonic, or you'll vanish from my mains list once again… Get a new side special, better KO moves, anything! Hey look, a fast Dair meteor. Yesssss!
Yoshi: Even though you're SO HAPPY I can't use you for the life of me (except in 64). But that was before you stood tall and jumped out of shield!
Low Tier
Diddy Kong: Unless he doesn't rely on nanners anymore, I'm probably still gonna suck with him. The improved recovery looks great, but did Sakurai really need to buff Diddy further? #NerfTheNanners
Donkey Kong: I could never get this guy down. His recovery needs some improvement, though Sakurai's comment about DK's strength makes me wonder if the ape can finally get around his consistently average performance.
Fox: Tech skill + Me = No. I'll probably still be not too good at Fox. His recovery buff is just plain awesome, though.
King Dedede: The only reason I could decent with him was how Brawl's physics made his chain throws and Bair so good. Is Jet Hammer useful? Can the Gordos be knocked back so easily in the final version?
Little Mac: He looks like a blast to play as, but that air game is kinda deterring me. Playing Mac against someone like Diddy or Snake would be suicide, so hopefully he has approach options besides running forward. Imagine him teamed with Jiggs, though!
Lucina: Call me a hypocrite all you want for putting Marth on top and Lucina in low, but she seems like a less fun clone.
Pac-Man: I was worried about his moveset would be handled, but the way Sakurai handled it was just brilliant. He doesn't seem like my kinda character, though.
Rosalina: I already suck with the Ice Climbers, so puppeteers are not for me. However, I might try to challenge myself to learn either her or Olimar and see how I do.
Sheik: She seems like she'll mix well with me, but I couldn't really play her in Brawl. The Burst Grenade shouldn't be useless like Chain, and Bouncing Fish should help her predictable recovery.
Bottom Tier
Ike: I can't play him for crap, but my friend (who invented FE characters having the recovery of a bagel) will be happy to know that his Brawl main is back. If I stick with Marth, we could partner for the dream team like the good old days.
Link: I like him, but he's always been mediocre to bad, so I've never felt motivated to play him. The improved Gale Boomerang, Spin Attack, and Clawshot are nice, but will it be enough overcome the superior clone syndrome?
Mario: He's just so boring in design (for the love of Sakurai please smile, it's just a game) that he's no fun for me. If they're bent on keeping F.L.U.D.D., it should be better in literally every way since that thing was way too situational in Brawl.
Mii Fighter: I was expecting them, but didn't want them. To me, they don't seem as fun as the other characters.
Peach: Her style is just not for me. Sorry, princess. Can Toad be more useful, please? I seriously don't get the people who still think Toad has a chance…
Samus: I've never played her much, and I doubt that'll change even with her supposedly being the current best character in the game. My brother used Samus even in Brawl, so he should be happy.
Toon Link: The fact that he still seems to be the superior clone upsets me. And I can't play him.
Zelda: Her character design is just so bad that I can never use her. Although the buffed Din and new Phantom are nice, she just needs a moveset overhaul with more speed and easier sweetspots.
Brawl
Despite the naysayers, I enjoy Brawl a lot. Sure, it's not exactly cut out to be played at the Melee competitive level, but I feel that this attitude came about because some people approached this game like a "Melee 2". All the Smash Bros. games are created as totally different beasts, and Brawl was intentionally made to be more accessible to the casual audience the Wii was targeting.
Marth: I main Marth since I like the quick and nimble characters, and the reach is a sweet bonus.
Wario: I second Wario since he's deceptively quick thanks to his air speed, and that combined with his flying motorcycle and weight makes him a pain to kill.
Pikachu: My other secondary since I've always liked Pikachu, and Brawl is definitely a better environment for it than Melee.
Kirby: Kirby's an old main who still appears in friendlies. He would've certainly stayed that way if he was more mobile.
Lucario: I've only picked up Lucario recently, but his aura gimmick is great when I use him.
Meta Knight: Despite not using him much, his brokenness makes me still win a bit.
Zero Suit Samus: I started her kinda late, but she works well for the most part.
Ness: I've always liked Ness, but he's got some big issues that prevent me from using him seriously.
Sonic: Sonic was my first main due to hype and his great speed, but his appalling KO power turned me off to Kirby later.
Luigi: No matter how much I use Luigi, I can never do too great with him, so he's just a fun pick to mix it up.
Project M
Despite some of the PMBR's decisions being questionable (re-cloning Falco, lazily keeping Melee top tiers, putting in technical barriers like L-cancelling and no buffering, making some things like Melee for its own sake), I have fun with PM. I love how they're trying to make everyone viable (but intentionally inferior to Fox/Falco…), and some of their modded characters are pretty fun for me to play as.
Sonic: My old vBrawl main Sonic (or rather, the purple "Ponic the Grapefruithog", called so by my same friend who made the recovery of a bagel joke) came back in the spotlight thanks to the new environment. I love the new Fair, Nair, Dsmash, and better Spin Charge.
Ness: Ness's PK Fire, Back throw, and Dair are too good to ignore. It's funny to Fire over and over to hit with a sweetspotted Fsmash.
Charizard: Charizard's new focus on air play works surprisingly well for me, and the Seismic Toss is just plain awesome.
Luigi: He does OK, but until I figure out how to reliably wavedash, he'll just be a fun pick.
Wario: I miss the bike and crazy fart, but the shoulder bash is fun too.
Brawl Minus
Since I've only played some Minus on my friend's Wii, I have yet to form a complete opinion on the mod. From what I've played, though, it's a blast! So far, Lucario is definitely my favorite.
Melee
I used to play this so much with my friends back in the day, but my disc broke one day and I've never felt motivated to replace it. The fast-paced gameplay is exhilarating and I totally see why this is the top pick for tourneys, but sometimes it felt a bit too fast for me.
Captain Falcon: Falcon was my go-to guy here since he's heavy, fast, and strong; what's not to like?
Marth: Marth was fun here, but I personally prefer his Brawl counterpart.
Pikachu: Pikachu was nice, but even back then I could tell that he wasn't as potent as he was in 64.
Kirby: I don't care if Kirby was garbage as I wanted to use my old favorite.
Smash 64
Smash 64 Character Competency Tiers
One of my first ever games, this is an old favorite that I play despite it not aging too well. Please note that these characters ARE sorted within the tiers, but I like the look of this colorful table better. And I couldn't figure out how to work the tier list code…
Kirby: Although Pikachu was my first ever Smash character (Pokémon Red was my first game ever) he took a back seat to Kirby, who I liked for his mobility and power, which was cemented further when I rented Kirby 64.
Pikachu: Pikachu's charm and speed won me over thanks in no small part to the Pokémon anime.
Ness: I had no idea who the hell Ness was, but psychic powers and the Dair stomp was enough for me.
Link: I hadn't played any Zelda games at the time, but Link was a cool pick I use in friendlies.
Yoshi: I started picking him as a joke, but he grew on me a bit in this game. I think this is Yoshi's strongest outing yet, although he has his own fair share of problems.
Fox: I rarely pick him unless I do joke dittos with my brother. The Blaster is so broken, especially on Hyrule.
Luigi: Just like in Brawl, I like Luigi, but I am godawful at playing him.
Mario: I don't pick him much, but when I do, insert joke here I do alright.
Jigglypuff: I only pick her as a a joke pick, and I don't do too great.
Donkey Kong: I don't like playing DK, especially in this game. He's just too slow.
Samus: I think the devs are idiots for thinking Samus could get by in this game. She has really slow moves with power that doesn't match, and her recovery is total garbage. She should really have the bottom tier to herself.
