Cross-platform comparison of Super Smash Bros. 4

This page lists noteworthy similarities and differences between the Wii U and 3DS versions of Super Smash Bros. 4.
Similarities
- The two versions will have the same characters.[1] It is presumed that characters will have identical physics and movesets across both versions.
Differences
Stages
- All stages will be exclusive to one version or the other. The 3DS version will feature more stages from handheld games, while the Wii U version will feature more stages from console games. Even the two games' versions of Battlefield (the only stage confirmed for both versions), while possibly identical in physics, will be different in aesthetics.[2]
Graphics
- Aside from the Wii U version's graphics being technically superior due to having stronger hardware and higher resolution, the two games have distinct graphical styles. The 3DS version has flatter shading and a black outline around its characters in order to make them more visible on the 3DS's smaller screen. The Wii U, not being restricted by screen size, has smoother edges around the characters and more complex shading.
Customization
- The 3DS version will contain an exclusive character customization feature, with customized characters being transferable to the Wii U version.[3] Not much detail has been revealed on what this feature entails, but it has been stated that customizations will not be different costumes and that the customizations will not have to be unlocked by completing repetitive tasks. Later, in a GameSpot article, Sakurai said in an interview that "Perhaps the best way to think of it is: it's not the strength of the attacks that change--their power--but the directionality of those attacks will change with customization." [4]
Miscellaneous
- There will be no possibility for cross-platform play, due to the two games not sharing stages.[5]
