Talk:List of developers significant to Super Smash Bros.

Couple of things

  1. I don't think each section needs a wikipedia tag. Why not just put it at the top of the article and call it good?
  2. The Iwata text is ripped from his base article. It should be summarized, not plagiarized. Serpent SKSig.png King 22:57, 29 May 2017 (EDT)
  1. The Wikipedia tag doesn't support mention of more than one page.
  2. It would not be in the final article; I just included it for the sake of the outline. Nyargleblargle.pngNyargleblargle (Contribs) 23:59, 29 May 2017 (EDT)

Ken Sugimori

Is he really a notable developer as far as Smash is concerned? He drew a newcomer poster for Smash 4, but for example so did Nomura. --Rdrfc (talk) 05:34, April 19, 2020 (EDT)

Neutral, leaning towards Remove. Yeah, I don't really know about this one. This list is stated to contain developers significant to either Smash or one of its major franchises, and you could easily argue that Sugimori is and has been HUGELY significant to Pokemon, which is unarguably a major franchise in Smash. But by that logic, why isn't the lead developer for the Pokemon games included here too? (pardon my Pokemon staff ignorance) This is a sort of slippery slope to ride down - I personally don't mind keeping him here, but since he does not seem to have strongly contributed to Smash specifically, it would incentivize the addition of lead developers for many other franchises in Smash. We should probably provide better specification for what qualifies a dev to be listed here. Acgamer28 15:22, April 19, 2020 (EDT)

toby fox

Toby fox helped remix MEGALOVANIA and I think helped design the Sans mii costume, and is friends with sakurai —Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.15.147.53 (talkcontribs) 03:42, February 2, 2021 (UTC)

This doesn't necessarily make him significant to the development of the series. He had a relatively small impact on it. ihaveahax (talk) 22:45, February 1, 2021 (EST)
1 song and 1 costume compared to the biggest names in the industry, whom Smash, and possibly modern Nintendo, wouldn't exist without. --CanvasK (talk) 22:48, February 1, 2021 (EST)
Honestly I think we should transform this article into one about outside staff (aka guest staff) that worked on some part of the game. This would primarily include staff that contributed towards artwork or music. The current way the article is barely touches upon the many many developers the game actually had. Shigeru Miyamoto, as far as I know, isn't even relevant to the series outside of presenting the game at E3. We should instead be focusing on the lesser known developers that still provided a major impact on the series' development (That's a topic for another discussion though). Would anyone be in support of transforming this page into exclusively outside/guest staff? Señor Mexicano (talk) 23:02, February 1, 2021 (EST)
On one hand Miyamoto created many of the series that Smash built itself on, on the other hand I'm not sure what he has done with development. I wouldn't be opposed to the idea of changing the article's scope. Another idea would be a new article "List of developers who contributed to Super Smash Bros.". --CanvasK (talk) 23:12, February 1, 2021 (EST)
As I've stated already, there are many many countless developers significant to the series that don't really get much spotlight. This article only lists a few of them and some of them are hardly relevant. I think the best course of action would be to just change the scope of the article and change the name. "List of developers who contributed to Super Smash Bros." would be a lengthy article and could just be summarized in the form of the staff credits pages we already have. Señor Mexicano (talk) 23:20, February 1, 2021 (EST)
I was re-reading the article and realized how sparse it is. There's Hideo Kojima who's main point is he made Snake, so where's Gregg Mayles (Wikipedia says he made Diddy Kong, K. Rool, and Banjo-Kazooie) or Hironobu Sakaguchi (creator of Final Fantasy)? Sugimori designed Pokémon, if Miyamoto is an iffy choice then Sugimori is even more-so. Itoi and Sakurai probably stay because they are the original creators/devs. Definitely feels like there's more needed. --CanvasK (talk) 23:37, February 1, 2021 (EST)
MEGALOVANIA is a single song among the literally 1000+ that are in the game. The Sans Mii outfit does admittedly give Toby a little bit more weight, but honestly, we can't be adding names to this page just because they appear somewhere in the game's credits. Kojima is there because he designed the Shadow Moses Island stage. Sugimori is there because he drew the Greninja poster, I guess. Admittedly the page is kind of a mess and I wouldn't be opposed to have it deleted altogether. Rdrfc (talk) 02:37, February 2, 2021 (EST)

I would absolutely support it's removal. Within the coming days I am going to focus on creating pages for pretty much any staff member I can find info on. If anyone would like to help me, feel free to do so. Señor Mexicano (talk) 03:54, February 2, 2021 (EST)
Yeh, this page is frankly a pain in the ass. We should probably flag it. Black Vulpine of the 🦊Furry Nation🐺. Furries make the internets go! :3 03:57, February 2, 2021 (EST)
I think before that we need to have a good discussion on notability guidelines for people involved with development. I don't think it is a good idea to potentially have articles for every single person mentioned in staff credits (this would include voice actors as well). Rdrfc (talk) 07:16, February 2, 2021 (EST)

Creating 1 song and being responsible for only 1 mii costume is hardly considered "significant" enough to be worthy of a mention on this article. For my signature. Omegα Toαd, the Toαd Wαrrior. (BUP) 07:56, February 2, 2021 (EST)

Is this still up for discussion? Because honestly I agree with just gutting this page altogether because I think it's way more trouble than it's worth. "major impact on one of Smash's franchises" is just way too vague to really define, and their slant relation to the development of the series on the whole disinterests me in trying (barring Itoi-san just because his name is on the title screen copyrights, but I doubt that alone is a compelling reason to have this page). - EndGenuity (talk) 14:33, September 17, 2021 (EDT)

I move for the deletion discussion to be closed. It's clear there isn't particularly strong support for this article's deletion, and the tag has just been sitting there for over a year. Furthermore, the idea that a page should be deleted because it's a little difficult to maintain is just ridiculous, and the discussion should have never begun on those grounds to begin with. Alex the Weeb 16:41, March 30, 2022 (EDT)

I strongly disagree with that assertion. "Difficult to maintain" is not the only reason for this article's deletion, or even the main one. There's a lot of contention between who should go on this (very short) list and who should not. The article on its own serves very little purpose, especially when everyone on this list, save for Kojima and Sugimori, already has their own articles. I don't see any reason why we can't just go ahead and create articles for Kojima and Sugimori, as well as anyone else who we decide is worthy of this list down the line. Come to think of it, this page should probably be a Category rather than a mainspace article. Black Vulpine the 🦊Furry🐺. Furries make the internets go! :3 19:31, March 30, 2022 (EDT)
The purpose of this article is to collaberate information about staff members, including those who aren't notable enough to have their own dedicated articles. This article is not the only one of its kind in that regard. Alex the Weeb 19:36, March 30, 2022 (EDT)
That may indeed be this article's intended purpose, but it isn't, and hasn't ever been, used as such. Sugimori would be notable enough to have his own article as it stands right now, and Kojima definitely is. Until we can think of someone else who could go on this list but isn't notable enough for a standalone article (a line so seemingly fine as to be nonexistent in this case), this article should be deleted or moved to categories. Who would the staff members that are notable enough to be listed here, but not in their own page, even be? The public facing side of Smash development is very much about Sakurai only. Even regarding people like Ken Sugimori, does just drawing a poster qualify for being listed here? I could be convinced otherwise but in my view Ken Sugimori (or Nomura or what have you) are only tangentially related to Smash Bros. and therefore of little relevance for SmashWiki. --Rdrfc (talk) 06:52, March 31, 2022 (EDT)

Since there are a lot of devolopers...actually maybe "contributors" might be a better title now that I think about it. Anyway, since there are a lot of them with very small contributions, perhaps it would be better if this was reformatted into a table structure with only a brief summary for each on their contribution to smash. It's better than ignoring minor contributions and throwing out in-scope information for no reason. Serpent SKSig.png King 12:57, April 1, 2022 (EDT)
