Bad Things Happening to Good People is an ongoing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate online tournament being held on September 4th, 2021 by WhyDo. The tournament is single-elimination and all best of one sets. True to its name, it features an unconventional joke ruleset that takes full advantage of Ultimate's infamously terrible online netcode, with no region locks, disqualifications for anyone who requests a lag test, and the option to gentleman to any game. The tournament prides itself as the first online Smash tournament with a vaccine mandate, maintained by the honor system. The Ultimate prize pool is $500 ($300 contributed by Panda), which will entirely go to 1st place. A Rivals of Aether bracket is being held on September 5th, with a $300 prize pool contributed by the game's creator, Dan Fornace.

Trivia

  • This event was the largest best of one Smash tournament of all time, as well as the first tournament with over 1,000 entrants to have every entrant seeded entirely algorithmically without any human discretion (based on Smash.gg winrate).
