Independent wiki[edit]

An anonymous user recently changed the links in Shulk's page to a independent wiki known as https://www.xenoserieswiki.org/. Generally we support independent wikis over FANDOM-run wikis, and this wiki is no exception, being independent since February 2020. I would love the owners to affiliate with NIWA considering that this wiki seems in need for support! I'm all for supporting the independent wiki, but just for consensus purposes, I would love to know what everyone else thinks. -- PanchamBro (talkcontributions) 03:38, February 22, 2021 (EST)

The Xenoblade Wikia on FANDOM is a lot more developed than the independent one. Unless it's some rule set in place by NIWA or the wiki itself to only link independent wikis, I'm in favor of linking to the FANDOM wiki. Señor Mexicano (talk) 05:11, February 22, 2021 (EST)
I'm thinking we should link to the articles on that wiki that are good enough quality, but for those that are lacking we'll link to the Wikia articles still. Omega Tyrant TyranitarMS.png 09:11, February 22, 2021 (EST)
As much as I don't like Wikia, I don't think the rule should outright be "no Wikia whatsoever"; rather, "whichever one covers the information better should be the external link". With all of these third-party characters, we're gonna have information outside the scope of the NIWA, and even if this was just Brawl, we'd probably still be linking to both the Sonic and Metal Gear Wikias regardless. Obviously Wikipedia exists, but I don't think that should be a default in place of an established wiki, Wikia or not, that focuses on the information we need to cover here.
Now, if the non-Wikia wiki becomes better in their information coverage, then sure, we could link to it, because I would like to have as few links to Wikia as possible. Aidan, the Lovely Rurouni 10:24, February 22, 2021 (EST)
I'm with Aidan on this one. While on principle I'd rather not be sending traffic to Wikia, they are unfortunately the better resource for certain series and sometimes that means linking to them despite everything. Miles (talk) 11:42, February 22, 2021 (EST)
@Aidan, I'm sure the wiki would benefit immensely if it became a NIWA member. If I correctly, a lot of wikis back in 2010 when they joined the alliance were either run-downs from their previous Wikias, and had to be adjusted accordingly. While the Xenoblade Wikia is more developed, it just means that we haven't been helping the independent wiki gain ground, and I think joining NIWA would give it benefits that would allow users from across NIWA to help the Xeno Series Wiki grow.
Alas, the Wikia still has finer details, but that doesn't mean we should keep relying on it. Because we would want to eventually move away from the Xenoblade Wikia and favor more in the Xeno Series Wiki. -- PanchamBro (talkcontributions) 14:04, February 22, 2021 (EST)
I don't really see a problem with relying on it until the independent one becomes comparable in quality, which unfortunately doesn't seem to be the case so far. Given the immense amount of content within the series, I imagine that might take a couple years. Señor Mexicano (talk) 17:29, February 22, 2021 (EST)
