—Description from Ultimate's Move List

Stampede! (あつまれヨッシー, Yoshis Assemble) or Yoshi Stampede is Yoshi's Final Smash in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Overview

Yoshi rears back and dashes straight forward. If it connects with an opponent, Yoshi will headbutt the opponent, a cutscene will initiate where the opponent appears in a lying position in a deserted, rocky gorge. Suddenly, the ground starts to shake as a stampede of multicolored Yoshis appear in the distance, running towards the prone opponents. The Yoshis emerge as they trample the opponent. Unlike other similar Final Smashes, Yoshi will stop and attack the first opponent he comes into contact with. However, up to three opponents can be trapped, but they must be close together. The headbutt deals 5%, and the Stampede deals 43.4%, totaling the damage to 48.4%.

Origin

The stampede in Melee's opening.

Stampede closely resembles a clip from Super Smash Bros. Melee's opening movie, where a stampede of multicolored Yoshis pass through a rocky gorge.

The Mini-Yoshi's Stampede attack.

Stampede is also an attack used by Mini-Yoshi in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. It calls a massive herd of Yoshis that will stampede (hence the name) on all enemies, as it does in Ultimate. However, The Thousand-Year Door came out after Melee, so it's likely that the move as it appears in that game is based on Melee's opening movie as well.

Trivia

  • While viewing Yoshi’s move list, this move is called Stampede!. However, when viewing the tips, it is instead called Yoshi Stampede.
  • Interestingly, the colors of the Yoshis are entirely random, and it does not depend on the player's chosen alternate costume.
    • However, none of the multicolored Yoshis will ever appear in his eighth alternate costume.
  • This Final Smash has infamously been compared to the death of Mufasa in Disney's The Lion King, where he was trampled to death by stampeding wildebeest.
