Wall jump
Wall Jumping refers to a technique performable by certain characters in Super Smash Brothers Melee and Brawl. It allows these characters the abilty to jump off of a wall, giving them additional height.
Performing
The wall jump is performed by jumping towards a wall and then pressing the control stick in the direction opposite the wall. It must be performed before the character reaches the peak of his jump. A wall jumping character experiences a short period of invincibility at the moment he kicks off the wall. One cannot wall jump forever though, as the height one gains from each successive wall jump decreases until they actually lose height. Only a few characters can wall jump.
Melee Characters
In Melee, the following characters were capable of performing a Wall Jump:
Brawl Characters
In Brawl, these characters are confirmed to have the Wall Jump ability:
In addition, the following characters are capable of Wall clinging, which allows them to stick to a wall for up to three seconds. This allows them to perform what is essentially a Wall Jump, but with more time to do it.
Related Techniques
- Wall cling: Performable in Brawl by the four characters listed above, this allows a character to stick to a wall for several seconds and then jump from it.
- Wall Tech: As any character wall techs, they can press the jump button to jump off of the wall, performing a Wall Tech Jump. This is not limited to characters that can Wall Jump
- Flip Jump: Zero Suit Samus has a unique wall jumping ability. Her Down B, the Flip Jump does an arc-jump through the air. If Zero Suit Samus hits a wall while performing this attack, she will automatically Wall Jump off of it. This will not count as one of her Wall Jumps, and thus will not reduce the height of subsequent Wall Jumps she performs.
Origin
The Wall jump is a common ability made available in platforming games. Several of the characters who have wall jumps here have had them in games of their own.
Mario, Samus and Sonic have performed wall jumps in their own series; Mario in Super Mario 64, Samus in Super Metroid and Sonic in Sonic Heroes.
There is some speculation as to whether or not Super Mario Brothers is the first instance of walljumping in Nintendo games, although in that game the technique was a glitch.
