Wall jump

The faster characters in the games have something called Wall jumps. For example, Young Link has one while Peach does not.
To Wall jump, simply jump at a wall and hit away from it once you hit it. You must hit the wall before reaching the peak of your jump, though. If successful, you'll perform a jumping animation and gain an extra jump (and even a bit of invincibility at the start of it to boot!).
