Carmilla (カーミラ, Carmilla) is a recurring boss from the Castlevania series. Her name is derived from the classic vampire novel Carmilla.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
Carmilla appears as a background character in Dracula's Castle in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. She appears in many forms in the Castlevania series, but her appearance as a giant mask in Ultimate is derived from her debut in Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. She appears in the background of the stage, hovering outside one of the windows of the castle. She does not seem to interact with the fighters.
Carmilla appears at the end of Simon and Richter's character trailer "Vampire Killer," where she appears outside a window in Dracula's Castle, frightening a ghostly Luigi, who is about to return to his body.
Origin
Carmilla made her debut in the 1871 novella of the same name by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, originally a serial narrative in The Dark Blue literary magazine. In the story, she is a long-dead woman named Countess Mircalla von Karnstein, who exclusively preys upon female victims. Carmilla would also anonymously attend masquerade balls to find more victims. Her mask seen in the Castlevania series as well as in Dracula's Castle and the "Vampire Killer" reveal trailer represents the ballroom masks that Carmilla would wear in the parties she attended, hiding her vampire identity.
Carmilla (sometimes translated as "Camilla" or "Vampira") first appears as the boss of Laruba Mansion in Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. Upon her defeat, she drops the Magic Cross, which grants Simon access to Dracula's Castle. Carmilla next appears in Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, facing off against Richter Belmont or Maria as the boss of Alternate Stage 4. Carmilla initially appears similarly to her Simon's Quest incarnation, before revealing her true form as a nude woman riding a flying skull. In Dracula X, Carmilla possesses Annette in the scenario where Richter is unable to save her and Maria before reaching the second to last stage. In Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, Carmilla acts as a major antagonist who seeks to revive Dracula; while she appears in a human form for most of the game, when she is fought she transforms into a form similar to the one seen in Rondo of Blood. - Although Carmilla's mask sheds blood in the Castlevania games, it sheds purple liquid in Ultimate, likely to maintain an E10+ rating.
