Ice Climbers (SSBU)

Ice Climbers are a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. They were confirmed on June 12th, 2018.

Changes from Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Aesthetics

  • Change Both Ice Climbers always face the screen regardless which direction either of them turn, as such both their stances is now mirrored.
  • Change The Ice Climbers gain additional detail due to the game's graphics. The duo now wear a coat with detailed furry lining, and powdered ice coat their boots and hammers.
  • Change Nana is decidedly more expressive, cheering Popo on when he throws an opponent, and showing distress when he is grabbed.
  • Change Either Ice Climber now hangs onto the ledge with one hand instead of two.

Ground attacks

  • Change Down smash is now a sweep that hits one side. The partner will use the same attack facing the other way.
    • Buff This attack covers more horizontal ground when together.
    • Nerf It does not hit both sides when solo.

Throws/other attacks

  • Nerf The partnering Ice Climber cannot act when the leader is grabbed onto. The partner is also unable to grab at all, and will taunt during the lead Ice Climber's throw. These changes were likely made to prevent unfair throw setups, such as moving Nana to setup an aerial spike after a down throw.

Special Moves

  • Nerf Ice Shot now damages the Ice Climbers when it's reflected back by a normal attack.
  • Buff Popo can now save an offstage Nana with Belay. If done close enough to her, she will simply teleport back to him and the move will continue to be performed.
  • Change Both Ice Climbers aim Blizzard forwards on the ground. While it deals double damage to opponents in front, it can no longer damage opponents from behind.
  • Change Iceberg now spins and features a teetering Polar Bear as an aesthetic element. During its duration, the lead Ice Climber now circles the Iceberg while holding a Condor.
