Move proposal[edit]

Okay, this one, I will confidently oppose. The big reason is all too simple: a Power Ranking is something that is universally considered to be a proper noun. You only need to look at any external source to find that out. And if nothing else, the PRs are all considered to be names themselves. Sounds and seems weird, but that just seems to be how it is. Definite oppose from me. Vulpine sums it up pretty well. You don't see anyone saying "Pr". While "rankings" might be lowercase in sports, most if not all of the competitive Smash scene capitalize both words. Pokebub (talk) 01:15, 4 March 2018 (EST)

Oppose If you're using MoS as your reason, then I'd like to point out that it says the following: "Titles should conform to what is most commonly used and understood, not necessarily what is official. In other words, terms should be referred to as they make the most sense within the community (e.g. "tilt attacks" or "tilts" as opposed to "strong attacks")." Aidan, the Rurouni 01:21, 4 March 2018 (EST)

"Power rankings" is not used universally as a proper noun, as can be seen here, or if you just Google the phrase "Power Rankings," there are numerous usages of only lowercase letters, while the phrase "Power Rankings" is almost always preceded by the name of the organization or league.

The abbreviations thing is unrelated; it's true that no one says "Pr," but people don't write abbreviations in lowercase either. DACUS, SHFFL, and a host of other abbreviations are written in caps, even though their subjects aren't proper nouns.

As for the MoS thing, this is not an issue of whether "Power Rankings" is used more commonly than "power rankings" as a generic term. "____ Power Rankings" is used to name a specific region's PRs, while "power rankings" is used for the term in general. Awesome Cardinal 2000 01:38, 4 March 2018 (EST)

[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] Here are various examples of professionally-written Smash-related articles where people use "power rankings" in lowercase to refer to the general term. Awesome Cardinal 2000 01:45, 4 March 2018 (EST)

I'd like to point out that all of those are news/blog/editorial articles, which are third-party sources that will not necessarily subscribe to a universal standard. If you can find a primary source that does not use the so-called 'standard', I will change my stance. Black Vulpine of the Furry Nation. Furries make the internets go! :3 02:32, 4 March 2018 (EST)
Many of the people who wrote those articles are active members of the Smash community; besides, their's nothing stopping them from writing it as "Power Rankings" if they really wanted to.
As for primary sources, I'm assuming you're referring to when a region releases their latest PR. These are named "(name of region) Power Rankings", which basically proves my point that only the proper noun names of a place will use it capitalized. Here is a YouTube video released by a college Smash community, where in the description, "power rankings" is used to refer to the generic term. Awesome Cardinal 2000 02:46, 4 March 2018 (EST)
I'm on the fence for your new example, but I may slide toward accepting it. I'll need to think about this one. Black Vulpine of the Furry Nation. Furries make the internets go! :3 02:52, 4 March 2018 (EST)
In addition, the eSports articles I linked are written in a professional manner and formal style. Since SmashWiki uses a formal writing style, it would be more appropriate to use the more formal variation of the term, which, based on the examples I linked, would mean using the lowercase "power rankings." Awesome Cardinal 2000 03:10, 4 March 2018 (EST)

Nah Power Ranking is as good as a proper nown to us, always has been. Serpent SKSig.png King 03:36, 4 March 2018 (EST)

Names should be based on what the community in general uses, not just what SmashWiki uses. Awesome Cardinal 2000 13:19, 4 March 2018 (EST)
Your argument only gives this vote another kick in the 'oppose' direction. My research has told me that the community mainly uses it in proper noun form. Black Vulpine of the Furry Nation. Furries make the internets go! :3 19:51, 4 March 2018 (EST)
Care to share it? Awesome Cardinal 2000 20:18, 4 March 2018 (EST)
Sorry, I thought I responded here. All I did was simply google "power rankings smash", and nearly all the instances of 'Power Ranking' I could find used proper noun capitals. In fact, the only instances that I could find that did NOT follow this rule were on the wiki itself. Granted, there are probably better ways of doing that kind of research, and I'm sure I'll get a ton of talk pages from you telling me what they are. Fact is, I was trying something that the average joe not fully versed in how the competitive scene (such as myself) would do, and interpret. Black Vulpine of the Furry Nation. When you google "power rankings smash", the words "Power Rankings" is capitalized because it's the name of a specific thing. Consider this sentence: "The National Football League is a football league." the words "Football League" in NFL are capitalized because it refers to a specific league. The words "football league" at the end of the sentence refer to the generic term. Awesome Cardinal 2000 18:07, 6 March 2018 (EST)
Ah, but I was looking at the text bodies as well, not just the page titles. That aside, you pretty much just admitted that PR is a proper noun by saying what you just did. Anyway, I have nothing more to say on this, and we're all just going in circles, so I'm motioning to declare this proposal failed. Black Vulpine of the Furry Nation. Furries make the internets go! :3 18:13, 6 March 2018 (EST)
We're not "going in circles", you're failing to respond to what I said. It is laughable to attempt to declare this proposal "failed" when you deeply misunderstand the purpose of this.
If you want me to explain the sentence I said above, I'll say it again:
"The SoCal Power Rankings" is a power ranking covering the region of Southern California." The first usage of "Power Rankings" is capitalized because it refers to a specific thing, the second usage of "power rankings" is lowercase because it refers to the generic term. Awesome Cardinal 2000 18:25, 6 March 2018 (EST)
Also, are you just going to ignore the five articles I linked where "power rankings" is used in lowercase to refer to the generic term? Awesome Cardinal 2000 18:26, 6 March 2018 (EST)
Claiming we're not going in circles, and then telling me that I'm ignoring those articles inspired my biggest facepalm ever. I dismissed all five of them with a very good reason why, and that was that. Black Vulpine of the Furry Nation. Furries make the internets go! :3 18:36, 6 March 2018 (EST)
