Sumabato SP 50 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate major held in Daito City, Osaka Prefecture on August 24th, 2024.
Tournament SummaryEdit
Raru, the 2nd seed of the event, won the tournament, giving him his second major in Ultimate. Raru defeated Ogatou (34th seed), MASA (15th seed) and Lax (26th seed) in top 96 in order to qualify for top 8. In top 8, Raru defeated Doramigi (3rd seed) and Hurt (1st seed) to get in Grand Finals, where he would face off against Doramigi. Doramigi would win the reset 3-1, however Raru would prevail 3-2.
The top 8 saw two unexpected players, in Navy (21st seed) and Tas (37th seed). Navy would get into top 8 through winners by defeating Seika (53rd seed), Snow (5th seed), and Futari no Kiwami Ah~! (36th seed). In top 8, Navy would lose his first set to Hurt 2-3 and his second to Maister (6th seed) 0-3, finishing 5th.
Tas became the first player to make the top 8 of a major using Piranha Plant since Brood at Umebura SP 4. Due to Tas losing their final round of group stage to Yn (28th seed), Tas would have to win 7 sets in losers to make top 8. Of particular note, Tas upset DIO (27th seed), Lax and Asimo (4th seed). Tas lost their first set of top 8 to Maister. Asimo as a result would finish 13th, after having also been upset during the group stage by Tsumusuto (61st seed) and Snow would finish 13th after being upset by Raki (19th seed).
The tournament saw a number of other significant runs, including ones from Futari no Kiwami Ah~!, Shinnnnnji (50th seed), Malk (110th seed), Masamon (97th seed), and Fuku (109th seed).
Futari no Kiwami Ah~! placed 9th after upsetting Rarikkusu (13th seed), Shinnnnnji and Malk placed 13th after upsetting Gorioka (11th seed) and Senra (31st seed) and Raki, Jogibu (23rd seed), and DieGorou (35th seed) respectively. Masamon placed 33rd after upsetting mzk (32nd seed) and Shion (33rd seed) during group stage while Fuku also placed 33rd after beating Tsuna (20th seed) and Rearlet (45th seed).
Other notable upsets at the event included Pekko (245th seed) over Kaninabe (12th seed), Injelly (58th seed) over Lv.1 (7th seed), denKOTA (55th seed) over Kuroponzu (10th seed), Wataru (56th seed) over Ryuoh (9th seed), kanata (214th seed) over Uraomote (43rd seed), Iba (49th seed) over Kome (17th seed), and Nako (86th seed) over Yone_pi (22nd seed).
