In order to do this, we would need a capture card, and an SD card, assuming that the owner of said card does not want to waste his/her time with friend cdoes. Does an admin have this? MegaTron1XD  22:05, 29 August 2011 (EDT)

I oppose, because this seems rather unnecessary. Mr. Anon (talk) 22:09, 29 August 2011 (EDT)

OK, I reread what Toomai's proposition said, and it seems it would work. Mr. Anon (talk) 22:16, 29 August 2011 (EDT)
Also, a method of recording could be using emulators and simply recording the screen. Mr. Anon (talk) 22:17, 29 August 2011 (EDT)

I Incredibly support this idea, i'd also like to help with it but i don't have a way to... unless someone knows the name of a device that can record through the AV ports in a TV. I really think this idea might increase the readers to the wiki, not only will they be great to watch and informative, but if we put some "see more" links within the video people who hang around YouTube watching "combo videos" and such might be more interested in coming here.--Shaun's Wiji Dodo talk   22:12, 29 August 2011 (EDT)

I just want to elaborate on my point a little more, I also like love this suggestion because it's a new and bold move, it's a different direction for a wiki and might be so sucessful that others might decide to follow this idea if it hasn't already been done. Someone always has to be the first, and I want it to be us.--Shaun's Wiji Dodo talk   03:30, 30 August 2011 (EDT)
Actually we are not the first - the Official Team Fortress Wiki is, and it's where I got the idea from, combined with the recent discussion of linking to videos of cutscenes. Toomai Glittershine   The SMASH-GINEER 12:49, 30 August 2011 (EDT)

It would be convenient, but would we have enough uploaders to make this worthwhile? Omega Tyrant   22:14, 29 August 2011 (EDT)

Neutral: While I don't think this is a terrible idea, it seems unwiki-ish to me. ƋoӄԏoяΠɛəи99 {ROLLBACKER} 23:19, 29 August 2011 (EDT)

Support Interesting way to branch out. --HavocReaper48 23:22, 29 August 2011 (EDT)

Weak support. It's an interesting idea, I will admit, but by itself, this Wiki really doesn't seem to use many YouTube videos. Considering this, I doubt that we'd actually need a YouTube channel. But I wouldn't complain if we got one. ReiDemon 23:35, 29 August 2011 (EDT)

Can someone explain what kind of video's will be uploaded if this passes? Because I want to know that before I vote. Support people can learn from it. But I am too young for YouTube :P--  PSIWolf (TCE) 04:55, 30 August 2011 (EDT)

Also, I have a emulator and a Brawl ROM, but the recording is not of perfect quality because I have to use Hypercam which refuses to work well with Dolphin. I can't use Fraps because THAT makes Dolphin crash.--  PSIWolf (TCE) 05:43, 30 August 2011 (EDT)

Support. This will also nullify the risk of Youtube videos being deadlinked in articles ahead. Smiddle 君怒る? 11:07, 30 August 2011 (EDT)

Support - Good idea. We won't need to rely on videos by other users and we can finally upload and submit glitches/techniques without video or picture evidence. Blue Ninjakoopa(Talk) 14:15, 30 August 2011 (EDT)

Here's the question. Should we have a link that links to the project page or directly to the YouTube channel? I would be in favour of either, but think it would be more useful for the average visitor if the link led to the YouTube channel. DokteurPain99 12:19, 15 October 2011 (EDT)
Maybe we can also put the latest vid on the main page. Anyways, I think a link to the channel.--  PSIWolf (TCE) 12:20, 15 October 2011 (EDT)

MonetizationEdit

The channel has received an invitation from YouTube to use advertising for monetization purposes. Am I correct in assuming that we'd be okay with this? Ideally, I'd set up the channel's AdSense account to send the money to Porple, in order to help cover our hosting costs. Miles (talk) 16:34, 19 October 2011 (EDT)

Yes. PenguinofDeath 16:37, 19 October 2011 (EDT)
Before I answer I'd like to hear from Purple that that is even a possibility. Really not interested in having a site I helped build be sold again. – Emmett 17:23, 19 October 2011 (EDT)
Porple says we're financially fine for now, presumably from the on-site ads. Is there some other purpose we could use the money from this for? Miles (talk) 17:39, 19 October 2011 (EDT)
Just so you know, this messsge isn't special, I got a similar one for my YouTube account. BlindColours o_0 18:58, 19 October 2011 (EDT)
I know, I just figured since it was the community's channel I should consult before taking action. Maybe we should save up to try and buy smashwiki.com back from Wikia...? Miles (talk) 19:07, 19 October 2011 (EDT)

Got a video of SSB Debug menuEdit

Due to the large size of the file (because of the format of the program I used), I'm going to upload this onto youtube myself, and make it so that only the Smashwiki account can view the video. After that, Miles (or OT) can copy the video and upload it themselves. Mr. Anon talk 21:07, 4 November 2011 (EDT)

How large are we talking here? Miles (talk) 21:34, 4 November 2011 (EDT)
The video itself isn't very long (only about 5 minutes), but the recording device I used saved it as a flash file, so I have to upload it directly. Mr. Anon talk 22:32, 4 November 2011 (EDT)
Damnit, I am unable to convert my file from .swf to a video file. If someone can find a free, reliable program for macs that does not leave a watermark, please refer to one. Again, I had a really good video of the debug mode, demonstrating all of SSB64's hackable features, but I am unable to put in on youtube since it is a .swf file. However, if Miles and OmegaTyrant are fine with watermarks, I can simply re-record it using a better program that unfortunately does leave a watermark. Mr. Anon talk 19:56, 6 November 2011 (EST)

YESH!Edit

I just found a better screen recording program and I have now shared videos of both the 64 debug menu and Kirby's SSB moveset. Mr. Anon talk 22:08, 6 November 2011 (EST)

The first video you sent I think was a mistake.
The second one had no audio and had your cursor over the middle of the screen. Neither of those is really a good thing. Miles (talk) 22:21, 6 November 2011 (EST)
I can fix that, if you want. Mr. Anon talk 22:24, 6 November 2011 (EST)
What you just sent me still lacked audio, still had your cursor on the screen, and also clearly showed your emulator and the rest of your screen. Miles (talk) 22:35, 6 November 2011 (EST)
Also, be sure that any other videos you intend to submit don't have these problems (specifically the debug video). Miles (talk) 22:39, 6 November 2011 (EST)
OK, I have fixed the sound and cursor problems in the Kirby vid. I can't do much about the emulator thing, but if it really matters that much, youtube should allow you to crop it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mr. Anon (talkcontribs) 21:47, 6 November 2011
Not to be rude, Anon, but the audio should only be the game audio. I should not be able to hear your keyboard. Miles (talk) 22:49, 6 November 2011 (EST)
YouTube doesn't give the option to crop, methinks. A dedicated video editing software, such as Sony Vegas 9, however, could do the trick. --- ReiDemon, Writer Extraordinaire, 22:50, 6 November 2011 (EST)
I'm sorry Miles, but that is not something I can deal with. That is the best I can get, and if that does not qualify, then I am sorry. Mr. Anon talk 22:52, 6 November 2011 (EST)

ResubmitEdit

Miles, I strongly urge you to reconsider your rejection. That video that I spend many hours trying to get a good recording of is one of, if not the, best videos you can find of the SSB 64 debug menu. Note that the debug menu can only be accessed from emulators, so there's not reason to reject it just because I recorded it from my computer. Mr. Anon talk 00:21, 10 December 2011 (EST)

I Agree with Mr. Anon. Toast  ltimatum  05:32, 10 December 2011 (EST)
Fix the problems Miles pointed out (only seeing the game screen and not whole computer screen, hearing ingame audio, and not hearing external audio, such as you typing on the keyboard). Omega Tyrant   09:27, 10 December 2011 (EST)
Again, I can't record internal audio without also recording external audio, and in the video you can see very little outside of the emulator video (not sure if you can see anything at all). Mr. Anon talk 16:14, 10 December 2011 (EST)

So...Edit

Any new videos on the horizon? BlindColours   21:49, 26 November 2011 (EST)

I've been busy with other things, so no, there are not any new videos from myself in the foreseeable near future. Omega Tyrant   22:00, 26 November 2011 (EST)
I had some pretty good videos, but they did not meet Miles' standards of quality. Mr. Anon talk 22:02, 26 November 2011 (EST)

Request deletion of my Test video.Edit

It provides nothing, and it was more of a test to see how well my emulator and screen capture program would work. --- ReiDemon, Author Extraordinaire, 16:19, 10 December 2011 (EST)

Problems logging inEdit

I keep trying to log into the channel, and each time I do, whether it's through our Goggle account or Youtube account, it just redirects back to whatever page I was on while not signing in. And I have not been having this problem with my own Youtube account. Omega Tyrant   20:29, 15 January 2012 (EST)

Odd, I'm having no trouble. Miles (talk) 21:08, 15 January 2012 (EST)
Apparently, it was some problem involving my cookies/cache. Clearing them fixed it. Omega Tyrant   07:21, 16 January 2012 (EST)

The Flop BlockEdit

I recorded a video demonstrating The Flop Block, to be uploaded to the SmashWiki YouTube channel. OT, if you want to come to IRC and exchange Skype details, I can send the video to you, or I can send it to Toomai if he wants to deal with it. Toast  ltimatum  20:07, 18 March 2013 (EDT)

Monetisation and paying contributorsEdit

I have an idea to encourage people to submit videos to the channel more often (and thus, get us more videos, views, and traffic to the Wiki);

I can monetise the account under my name. Then with the channel monetised, I can distribute the money earned to contributors based on the amount of money their contributions have made for the channel. Users however, can opt for their video to not be monetised, or for the earnings of their video to be donated to Porplemontage to cover hosting.

Are users here fine with this, or does anyone have a strong objection to this idea? Omega Tyrant   07:00, 2 April 2013 (EDT)

uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuggggggghhh ads :|
I'll have to think on this, I have zero knowledge of this process at all. Toomai Glittershine   The Sphere 07:15, 2 April 2013 (EDT)
Ad block :p
And for the process, each month or so, if over 100 had been earned, the money would be sent to my bank account. From there, I can distribute the money to participating contributors and Porplemontage. Omega Tyrant   07:17, 2 April 2013 (EDT)
Earning extra money for the wiki and its contributors would be beneficial in my eyes, even without the bonus of potentially bringing in new contributors. Ads aren't much of a pain, it's usually only a six-second wait before you can skip them. I support as long as you know for sure that you can see where the channel's earnings came from. I'm not experienced with YouTube monetisation, so I wouldn't know if YouTube made you aware of which videos were bringing in the coins. If the option is there, then go ahead. Toast  ltimatum  07:22, 2 April 2013 (EDT)
In anayltics, you can view the individual earnings of each video. If anyone suspects they were jipped out, I can take screenshots of it for them. Omega Tyrant   07:27, 2 April 2013 (EDT)
I still think adblock will ruin everything. But if you want to do this, go ahead, I have adblock myself :>--PSIWolf a.k.a. Luna! 07:29, 2 April 2013 (EDT)
Eh, a great idea in my opinion. Will greatly help improve the channel and others will definitely help to contribute if they know about it. I can live with the ads, I mean, I just minimize the web browser and do something else in the time being...But, if users are going to be payed, will an online money account (like PayPal) have to be opened or something? Airconny   09:11, 2 April 2013 (EDT)
I have absolutely zero knowledge of this process, but wouldn't monetizing our channel open the possibility of us getting sued by Nintendo for profiting on their games/characters/whatever? Or does it not work like that? Air Conditioner   IS RIGHT BEHIND YOU 09:29, 2 April 2013 (EDT)
Lots of Let's Players out there are able to make money from uploading their games, SmashWiki would be no better or worse. YouTube did offer the channel the chance to monetise themselves, after all. Toast  ltimatum  10:09, 2 April 2013 (EDT)

@Airconny: Yes, one would need a PayPal or something else that would allow me to transfer them the money with ease. If they don't have one and can't create one for whatever reason, I could try mailing a check to them (assuming their earned amount isn't very insignificant). Omega Tyrant   11:49, 2 April 2013 (EDT)

Oh, okay. But, if they decide not to opt for a PayPal and decide to just receive the check, would you just save their sum and after theirs has reached a significant amount, then you would send it over to them? just want to clear this up before others start questioning about this procedure. -- Airconny   12:05, 2 April 2013 (EDT)
If their earned sum is very small, then yes, I would save it up for it to grow a bit before mailing the check. Omega Tyrant   12:10, 2 April 2013 (EDT)
Ah, okay. This is so no one else will bother to ask it if it's been answered. Thanks you, and I have a video I will submit to you later. Airconny   12:21, 2 April 2013 (EDT)
I've got two videos lined up too. Watch them be the same thing. Toast  ltimatum  13:05, 2 April 2013 (EDT)
Noooo, I got something WAY different. I know, I can just feel it in my gut. Airconny   14:04, 2 April 2013 (EDT)

If no one has any strong objections, I'll start the monetisation process later today. Omega Tyrant   07:31, 4 April 2013 (EDT)

Project Hitbox...Edit

So, based on a message I wrote on Toomai's user talk, "I recently conceived an idea with OT on demonstrating hitboxes with most of the SSBB characters". Basically, we are (depending if you are in it or not) going to create demonstrations of characters performing their moves with their frame data and such, while also showcasing their hitboxes. Now, it's really simple to get the hitboxes running. A quick search on Google will reveal to many their .pac files to activate their Brawl 'hitboxes'. Now, it's going to look something like this:

This isn't final, however.

So, if you would like to join this project, you may sign yourself up. However, time and patience is what we are going to need, and commitment. If you say you are going to do a characters hitbox data, and you don't, it'll slowly impede out movement, as once you pick a character, they will be reserved for you until done.

This thread should help those who need to config their game to look like the image above.

It would also be preferred if you could first record the move in full speed, then show the move again slowed down, either by frame-by-frame or by setting the game speed to "slow" or "1/4", depending if it's a replay or done in training mode. If you don't have access to a video editing software, you may send your video to any user who has these programs (such as Sony Vegas 12 Pro), such as myself, and we'll do the rest, crediting you for the replays.

Snake is taken as of right now (as always). Airconny   16:58, 19 April 2013 (EDT)

Contribution ideaEdit

I was looking around a page that showed articles in need of videos but after I looked at all of them I felt those were very complicated. Then I got an idea for one technique I can show: Koopa Hopping. This technique only works with Bowser. In order to do it, do a short hop, do his side special, jump, side special, jump and repeat. This technique is useful for improving his mobility and approach and letting him fade in and out with aerials or flying slams.LordGanondorf (talk) 16:22, 28 May 2013 (EDT)

A video on Koopa Hopping can be done (since the only real video on it I found on Youtube was a camcorder video from five years ago). However, it'll have to be quite comprehension, showing how to do it and applications of it, rather than just a demonstration. Omega Tyrant   19:51, 28 May 2013 (EDT)

I will work on it later today.LordGanondorf (talk) 09:15, 29 May 2013 (EDT)

Yeah, we should do something to try and spruce it up. Maybe this could be helpful here? BaconMaster  16:18, 29 March 2016 (EDT)
I don't see how abandonment justifies uploading videos that stray from the original purpose of the channel. MegaTron1  16:58, 29 March 2016 (EDT)
It was just a suggestion (I too would like some informational-ish videos) and I only really brought it up in case there was nothing else to upload and nobody minded. BaconMaster  17:01, 29 March 2016 (EDT)
I'd be willing to do character moveset showcases if we're willing to turn the other cheek on the framerate rule.  Nyargleblargle (Contribs) 17:41, 29 March 2016 (EDT)
