Meowth (ニャース, Nyāsu, Nyarth in Japanese language versions) is a fictional creature in the Pokémon media franchise. It is a Pokémon that comes out of a Poké Ball.
Character description
Meowth is a small oval-headed feline with a brown charm on its head. The Pokédex in the games explain that all a typical Meowth does in the daytime is sleep, and is a nocturnal species. For some reason, it is fascinated by anything that is round and/or shiny, and both its eyes and the charm on its head glow and sparkle when it picks things up. It can't stop itself from picking up things like shiny coins, and it wanders streets on a nightly basis to look for dropped loose change and secretly hoard it. If it gets a round object, it can't stop playing with it until it falls asleep. It withdraws its sharp claws into its paws to sneak about without making any incriminating footsteps.
Meowth is one of the original 151 Pokémon that appeared in Pokémon Red & Blue. A player can find a Meowth in the wild in various grass areas. In the advance generation of Pokémon games, Mewoth gained the Pick Up ability which allows Meowth to pick up random items while the trainer is traveling. Meowth's most notable role is in Pokémon anime. Meowth appeared as one of the grunts on Team Rocket. This Meowth is an unique Pokémon as he can talk the human language. Meowth likes to scheme with Team Rocket and causes havoc on Ash and his friends. Meowth is often seen along with Wobbuffet in Pokemon shorts such as the Pokemon Short, Gotta' Dance! Meowth also envies the attention that a Persian receives from his boss Giovanni. Meowth's signature move is Pay Day, the move used by Meowth in all of his appearances.
In Super Smash Bros.
As a Poké Ball Pokémon
Meowth makes an appearance as a Pokémon that appears out of a Poké Ball in Super Smash Bros. Meowth will use Pay Day as his attack. Meowth will jump in the air, scattering coins in all directions. Any character caught in the radius of this attack will take damage. The attack radius of Pay Day is short so it can be easy to avoid. However, you can become trapped in the barrage of coins. It's possible to take 30% damage in this attack, like that of a Bob-omb. Meowth's attack does not harm the summoner.
In Super Smash Bros. Melee
As a trophy
Meowth returns in Super Smash Bros. Melee but not as a PokéBall Pokémon. Instead, he has been relegated to a role as a trophy. This trophy is unlocked after getting the "Smash Blue" trophies (from the All-Star single-player mode) for all 25 playable characters. Interestingly, his description has nothing to do with his actual behavior in the Pokémon games, but refers to a short animation created to showcase the GameCube's graphics, that was originally going to be a game called Meowth's Party but was canceled. It more so relates to the Meowth in the anime. The trophy description is as follows:
- Meowth
- This...is Meowth's dream. Meowth strides all over the globe scattering invitations to other Pokemon, insisting they come to "Meowth's Party". At this wonderful party, guests are packed in like sardines as Meowth climbs up the stage with its faithful guitar. It strikes a chord, pauses, and then rocks their world!
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl
As a PokéBall Pokémon
Meowth reappears in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a PokéBall Pokémon again, with roughly the same effect as he did in Super Smash Bros. This time, Meowth throws a barrage of coins at the opponent instead of quickly of scattering coins in all directions. In addition, falling from above onto Meowth will cause the victim to be caught and then take heavy damage, the maximum being 300% if smash attacks are used in conjunction.
As a trophy
- Meowth
- A Scratch Cat Pokémon. It's one of the most famous Pokémon and very fond of things that sparkle--the gold medallion on its head could be seen as an indicator of this infatuation. There are many Pokémon that resemble cats, but Meowth is the only one that can use Pay Day to receive coins at the end of battle. It evolves into Persian.
Trivia
- Meowthne of several characters considered during development to be playable in the original Super Smash Bros., but ultimately cut from the original roster due to time constraints. She shares this problem with Bowser, Pit, King Dedede, Mewtwo, and Meowth, the last of which has not been playable at all so far.
