Palutena (パルテナ, Parutena) is a character from the Kid Icarus series. She was confirmed as a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. 4 during E3 2014 on June 10th, 2014. She was voiced in the trailer by Brandy Kopp, as her voice actress from Kid Icarus Uprising, Ali Hillis, was unavailable. She is voiced by Aya Hisakawa in Japanese. She fights using powers she would grant Pit (and other angels in the multiplayer) in Kid Icarus: Uprising.

Moveset

Ground attacks

Normal

• Neutral attack - Holds her staff out and releases blasts from the end, before releasing one final blast to knock the enemy away
• Dash attack - Bashes the enemy with her shield
• Forward tilt - Makes her staff spin in the air in front of her
• Up tilt - Leans back makes her staff spin in the air above her
• Down tilt - Makes her staff spin along the ground

Smash attacks

• Forward smash - Creates ethereal wings and swings them in front of herself
• Up smash - Conjures a blue beam of energy from the ground in front of her, firing it high up into the air
• Down smash - Creates ethereal wings and flaps them down on either side of her

Aerial attacks

• Neutral aerial - Spins her staff around her
• Forward aerial - Straight kicks in front of herself
• Back aerial - Swings her staff behind her
• Up aerial - Lifts her staff upward, attacking with magic
• Down aerial - Swings her staff below herself

Grabs and throws

• Pummel - Blasts the enemy with magic
• Forward throw - Pushes the enemy away with her magic
• Back throw - Kicks the enemy behind herself
• Up throw - Launches the enemy into the air
• Down throw - Slams the enemy into the ground

Taunts:

• Makes a sweeping gesture with her arms while she creates her ethereal wings and her halo appears.
• Spins around her staff, dancing with her foot in the air
• Her staff floats beside her while she brushes her hair aside and makes her halo shine.

Special moves

• Neutral Special 1: Autoreticle: A reticle appears at enemy position, with projectiles fired at it afterwards.
• Neutral Special 2: Explosive Flame: Creates an explosion at what appears to be a fixed distance away.
• Neutral Special 3: Heavenly Light: Projects a rectangular field of supernal light above her and to the sides. It deals damage in a large area without producing knockback or flinching.
• Side Special 1: Reflect Barrier - Casts a rectangular shield which knocks opponents away and reflects projectiles.
• Side Special 2: Angelic Missile - Shoots herself forward to attack with her own body, similar to Skull Bash and Green Missile.
• Side Special 3: Super Speed - Performs a charging attack where she glides along the ground very quickly, and for a long distance. She can damage enemies by ramming her body into them.
• Up Special 1: Warp: Disappears and then reappears elsewhere, similar to Dimensional Cape.
• Up Special 2: Jump Glide: Jumps a fair distance up, and then is able to glide similarly to Peach Parasol.
• Up Special 3: Rocket Jump - Creates an explosion that boosts Palutena upwards and damages nearby enemies.
• Down Special 1: Counter - Performs a basic counterattack with her staff, similar to that of the Fire Emblem characters.
• Down Special 2: Lightweight - Increases speed, but becomes more susceptible to damage and knockback.
• Down Special 3: Celestial Firework - Shoots an explosive projectile upwards.

Final Smash

• Palutena starts by sucking foes towards the center of the stage with Black Hole, putting them in a tumbling state, and then fires the Mega Laser into the Black Hole to deal damage, concluding with a final hit to knock the victims away as Black Hole dissipates.

Trivia

• The anime portions of Palutena's reveal trailer were created by Studio Shaft, who also worked on the Kid Icarus Uprising animated short Palutena's Revolting Dinner.
  • One member of Studio Shaft, Hideyuki Morioka, also drew the illustration found on Palutena's page in the official Smash Bros. site.
• Palutena and the Mii Fighters are the only characters that have their customizable special moves unlocked from the start.
