Lucario (SSB4)

Lucario (ルカリオ, Rukario) will be a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4. It was announced on January 31st, 2014, the same day that Super Smash Bros. Brawl was released in Japan; according to an extra post on the Miiverse reveal, this timing was done to commend the Brawl developers for succeeding in adding Lucario to said game. Like many of the other characters in Smash 4 that come from cartoonish franchises, Lucario has a less realistic and more sleek look than it did in Brawl, with its fur being less accentuated and its proportions more akin to its recent three-dimensional appearances in Pokédex 3D Pro, Pokémon X. and Pokémon Y.

On May 30th it was confirmed that Lucario's voice actor from the film Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, Sean Schemmel, would be reprising his role as Lucario's voice actor for its appearance in Super Smash Bros. 4.

Confirmed information

  • The "influence" of Lucario's aura has been increased. It is currently unknown if this means Lucario will gain power at a sharper rate, if even more of its moves are affected by it, if its aura cap has been increased, if the difference between a low and high damaged Lucario is more drastic, or some combination of the above.
  • When Lucario's aura is at higher levels, a visible aura covers its whole body, instead of just its hands.
  • Aura Sphere can achieve larger sizes, with its max size now being even larger than Lucario. Aura Sphere's graphics have also been altered, and smoke appears behind Lucario as it fires the projectile.
  • Force Palm's non-grabbing portion appears to be a faster and much larger blast, and appears to produce much stronger knockback.
  • Double Team, when successful, causes Lucario's eyes to glow.
  • The distance travelled by ExtremeSpeed is now dependent on aura, with its distance being able to travel beyond whole stages at max power, capable of launching the player out of the arena if they aren't careful; this is a significant buff that will improve Lucario's previously poor recovery and help increase its survivability at higher damages. It's unknown at this time, however, if this will mean the move will gain shorter distance at lower damages than it did in Brawl (which would make Lucario more vulnerable to gimps at low damages). ExtremeSpeed also now has visible aura streams shooting out of Lucario's hands as it uses the move, though it's unknown at this time if this will mean that ExtremeSpeed will now have hitboxes. It additionally appears that ExtremeSpeed can be cancelled into an attack, or Lucario now produces a moderately powerful kick when contacting an opponent with it.
  • Lucario's Mega Evolution form, Mega Lucario, has been confirmed to be in the game, where it has been stated that Lucario's aura attacks will be at maximum power regardless of damage while mega evolved. It's unknown at this time if it's Lucario's Final Smash, or if Lucario mega evolves through another method.
  • The following moves appear visually unchanged:
    • Neutral attack hit 3
    • Down smash
    • Back aerial
  • Up taunt now has more aura visuals.
