Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series 4 was a Super Smash Bros. Melee online tournament held from January 29th-30th, 2022 by commentator and YouTube streamer Ludwig. It was announced on Ludwig’s Twitter account[1] in response to the postponement of the tournament GENESIS 8, and was held during its original dates. The tournament was the first open tournament in the series. It had proportionate qualifiers from East Coast and West Coast into the top 64, as more people were playing in East Coast pools than West Coast.[2] 36 players qualified from East Coast, and 28 players qualified from West Coast. The tournament had the most entrants for an online Melee tournament, surpassing that of the largest offline Melee tournament, EVO 2016. It had a $30,001 prize pool, the ninth largest for a Melee tournament and the largest for an online Smash Bros. tournament.

The tournament was part of GenAssist, a fundraiser stream to help the GENESIS 8 crew with the six-figure cost of postponing GENESIS 8. The stream ran from January 27th-29th, 2022 and streamed Ludwig Ahgren Championship Series 4 matches on January 29th, with the top 12 taking place on January 30th after the GenAsssist event ended.

Because the tournament was region-locked to North America, Ludwig told his viewers to give subscriptions to Leffen's Twitch so he could fly over from Sweden to attend. He did the same to Sora's Twitch to convince him to stay in the United States to attend the tournament.

TriviaEdit

  • Prior to the tournament, Zain and Leffen's Sheik had an exhibition match for GenAssist, which Leffen won 5-1. The following day, he DQ'd due to food poisoning-induced stomach issues that morning. As Leffen had been staying at Zain's house, this prompted memes that Zain poisoned Leffen's food as retaliation for losing the showmatch.[3][4]
  • Axe and Smashdaddy both had to DQ due to internet issues.
